This week has been full of exciting news. Two Nobel prizes were awarded, both for the discoveries linked to Artificial Intelligence. First, on Tuesday, the prize in physics was given to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton "for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks”. Both of these names are well-known for everyone interested in artificial neural networks. Second, on Wednesday, the prize in chemistry went to David Baker “for computational protein design” and Demis Hassabis jointly with John Jumper “for protein structure prediction”. Are curious how come that a physicist got a prize for what is now considered a part of computer science or why a computer scientist got a prize in physics? Do you know what AI has to do with proteins? Read the extensive scientific information or just a popular background given on the Nobel Prize website: https://lnkd.in/devWE52x

Last week, we attended yet another Unstructured Data meetup, when we had chance to hear talks from: - Stephen Batifol on vector search at scale - Michael Hunger on integrating LLMs with knowledge graphs - Jakob Pörschmann on why graph storage is cheaper and faster (a lot!) As always, we had great discussions about the potential of unstructured data in machine learning. Thanks to Zilliz and Google Cloud for hosting! #UnstructuredData #LLMs #MachineLearning #GraphRAG

Data engineering: It's not just about tech, it's about business impact. As a data engineering services provider, we have seen first-hand how powerful data can be in transforming businesses. It's not just about building fancy software or integrating more datasets (although that's important too!). What we are really talking about is using data to drive meaningful change in your organisation. We help you transform your business by harnessing the power of data. By leveraging insights, we let you identify new opportunities, optimise processes, and - most importantly - to make informed decisions. This isn't really about technology; it's about changing the culture of using information in your organisation. When we partner with you, you can expect: - Increased efficiency: By automating data processing and analysis, we'll free up resources so you can focus on high-value tasks that drive real results. - Improved accuracy: Our expertise in data engineering ensures that the analysis and insights we derive from your data is accurate, reliable, and actionable. - Enhanced decision-making: With data-driven insights, you'll be able to make more informed choices, which in turn can reduce risk, and drive business growth. Feel free to share your experiences with data engineering in the comments below. What challenges have you faced, and how did you overcome them? Do you have advice or tips to add? #dataengineering #business #businessintelligence #BI

Recently we went across a piece by Adrian Brudaru on dltHub blog, which states in the introduction: "Companies that build their first data stack usually start with a small investment - so it is unlikely they start with a senior team and the vision or resources needed to build a platform. Due to this, it’s more likely that the team will start with something that works and go from there. (...) This is far from a consistent, sustainable way to manage data pipelines or data flows" This is, of course, true. But we believe it doesn't have to be that way. How to do it better? A non-obvious place where one could meet us recently: Poznań. Last week we visited Polagra - a large food industry event. What do we have to do with food industry? - you may ask. As it turns out monitoring food transport and storage conditions poses some quite interesting challenges, also in data analytics domain. We had an opportunity to talk with Anna Skóra-Cichowska, Janusz Skóra-Cichowski and Piotr Bratoszewski from EmbeddedSystems.do - Design House about their latest product: #ESLOG system. We discussed the details of the #analytics platform, which is an integral part of the system, and its possible further development and enhancements. Are you curious how data analytics can be used for optimisation of your supply chain? Guess, whom you can contact :-)

    • The Poznań International Fair (main building) is the place where Polagra takes place.

Are you struggling to find the right talent to fill skill gaps in your technical team? 🤔 Staff augmentation might be the solution you've been looking for! So, what exactly is staff augmentation? It's a process of hiring temporary or contract-based workers to fill skill gaps in your team. This can be especially helpful during periods of high demand or when you need to ramp up a project quickly. But what are the benefits? Cost-effective Staff augmentation can help you save money by only paying for the skills you need, when you need them. No more worrying about the overhead costs of hiring full-time employees! Flexibility With staff augmentation, you can scale your team up or down as needed, without having to make long-term commitments. This means you can adjust your workforce to match your project needs, without any unnecessary expenses. Increased productivity By bringing in specialized talent on a contract basis, you can tackle specific projects or tasks more efficiently and effectively. This can lead to increased productivity and better results for your business. How can you get started with staff augmentation? Here are some steps to consider: 📋 Identify your needs Decide what needs to be done and in which areas your existing team falls short. Merely listing all the tools and technologies your team is currently using is not enough. Focus on where you want to be and why, not on where are you now. 📝 Negotiate contracts Once you've found the right people, it's time to negotiate contracts. Make sure both parties fully understand the terms of the agreement, including pay rates, job duties, and any other important details. Remember: your contract workers are not your employees. Different rules apply. 🤝 Onboard and integrate Once the contractor staff is on board you need to integrate them into your team. Make sure they have the resources and support they need to be successful. The external consultants are typically highly skilled individuals ready to contribute from day 1. Make sure that your procedures do not impede. So, what do you think? Have you considered staff augmentation for your business? What's your experience been so far? Let us know in the comments below! #staffaugmentation #technicalteam #consultants

There is a surprisingly popular myth that a DWH should be based on a columnar storage. This is not true. While a columnar storage has its advantages it is not a prerequisite for a DWH. And apart from advantages there are downsides, too (e.g. limited indexing possibility). In practice PostgreSQL serves very well as a small to medium size DWH, often outperforming MPPs and operating at a fraction of the cost. The mileage may vary depending on the data access patterns and other specific circumstances, but as a rule of thumb if your data volume does not exceed ~1TB range PostgreSQL should at least be seriously considered before deciding for more fancy products. It may be the simplest, cheapest and overall best solution. We successfully set up several data warehouses on PostgreSQL. We also done DWH migrations to PostgreSQL, saving 1000s of EUR/month on infrastructure and improving performance at the same time. Need an unbiased advice? We have witnessed quite a few discussions on how the data functions should be organised. The key point is on centralised vs. decentralised data team. Both views have their ardent supporters. What is often missing in such discussions is the context. We tried to summarise the pros and cons in a blog post:https://lnkd.in/e3RtuMBd TL;DR: Don't just blindly copy the structure from Spotify or Zalando. What worked for them may not work for you. Unless you are actually a second Spotify or Zalando (but probably you aren't). #dataengineering #dataanalytics #datateam
