It doesn't happen often that long-term, not so obvious and unsexy unclickable journalistic topics like Ukrainian Roma or stories from Polish-Belarusian border would get recognition of such an honorable jury! Tagesspiegel, taz-Panther-Stiftung, Süddeutsche Zeitung and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, in the frame of "Recherchepreise Osteuropa" organised by Renovabis e.V., n-ost - Network for border crossing journalism and Diakonisches Werk Württemberg gave last night the prize to two teams: Emilia Sulek & Danil Usmanov and Nadine Wojcik &.....me. Happy, proud and highly motivated!!! Not need to mention how much I am grateful for the time and attention on the stage to talk about the border, many questions within the whole evening and big will to change things into better. Let's! Nadine my dear partner in crime, I missed you a looooot!!!

In October, n-ost brought together European journalists in Tbilisi to explore Georgia's evolving political landscape. The participants met with Georgian media professionals, politicians, and civil society leaders. The timing proved right, allowing our participants to document the currents shaping today's electoral landscape. As Georgians are voting, we're sharing five stories that emerged from this exchange: • ‘Gruzini głosują. Na szali przyszłość kraju, w tle wojna w Ukrainie’, Aleksander Palikot for Nowa Europa Wschodnia on how Georgia's ruling party has weaponized fear of war in its campaign strategy. • ‘Tanz für den Frieden’, Karin Finkenzeller for Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on how Georgia's youth culture and growing tourism sector face uncertainty as pro-Russian political shifts threaten the country's emerging position as Central Europe's favourite destination. • ‘Georgische Droom, of een nachtmerrie?’, Franka Hummels for Vrij Nederland on How Georgia's LGBTQ+ activists face mounting pressure as ruling party adopts Russia-style "family values" laws. • ‘Fearmongering in the Caucasus: Georgians choose between “peace or Brussels”’, Gyorgy Folk for Voxeurop on how Georgian Dream's anti-Western rhetoric intensifies as EU voices concerns over democratic backsliding. • ‘Georgia’s Ruling Party Tries Winning With the Kremlin’s Ukraine Rhetoric’, Luke Johnson for Internationale Politik Quarterly, diving into the international implications of Georgia's electoral choice. The research trip was part of n-ost's broader commitment to fostering deeper understanding between European and Georgian media landscapes. #GeorgianElections #MediaFreedom #Journalism #n_ost

Hei from Helsinki! n-ost is at "In the face of war - European dialogue", initiated by the Institut français de Finlande. Yesterday at the University of Helsinki's Think Corner, n-ost's Senior Editor Judith Fiebelkorn joined Robert Sundman (Suomen Kuvalehti) and Laurent Marchand (Ouest-France) for a discussion on media independence in Europe. The panel addressed systemic challenges for a free journalism: • Structural funding crisis exacerbated by inflation, particularly impacting independent and investigative newsrooms • Escalating threats to journalist safety, from digital surveillance to physical intimidation • Strategic deployment of intimidating SLAPP lawsuits to obstruct investigative reporting • Erosion of public trust, particularly evident in coverage of complex geopolitical events • Implementation gaps in the European Media Freedom Act As n-ost Senior Editor Judith Fiebelkorn emphasizes: 'Small non-profit media benefit from larger media's solidarity, big media can learn from the small ones about resilience and audience engagement.' n-ost`s mission to break national media bubbles and build an integrated European media sphere becomes even more crucial as independent journalism faces mounting pressures. Join our border-crossing network of 500+ journalists and let's face the challenges together. #EuropeanMedia #MediaIndependence #EuropeanDialogue #EMFA #n_ost
