Happy #InternationalWomensDay! 💪 💚 💙 For us NIDISIs, this is a very special day because today we celebrate the core of what makes our initiatives so strong, innovative, and unique. Our focus remains on designing and creating social businesses that place women at the heart of the circular economy. Especially on this day, you will probably come across a lot of buzzwords like #womenempowerment on LinkedIn. We want to be clear about what we mean by it: For us, women empowerment means that women worldwide have power and control over their own lives and make self-determined decisions. Our mission is to place women in leading positions within the #circulareconomy or in social projects and businesses. We prioritize circular products and services that actively contribute to women gaining more power and control over their own lives. With Sparśa, we not only want to address #periodpoverty and the lack of access to chemical-free alternatives for menstrual pads—let alone break the stigma around menstruation—but we also provide women with decision-making power and place them in management positions. So let's celebrate the strength and diversity of the bold women worldwide. #Humanitycandobetter

Maybe you can relate to this?👇 🌏For NGO practitioners working in development, effective communication is a constant balancing act. ⚖️We need to stay aware of our own biases but we also need to ensure our messaging reflects reality without reinforcing ingrained stereotypes. ⚖️We need to avoid negative stereotypes without over-glorifying our work. ⚖️And we need to simplify complex issues for fundraising but without losing depth in awareness-raising. Emma Hofste who supported NIDISI on communication related matters for many years, has deep dived into this complex and very important topic in her dissertation. In this article, she’s summarises her main findings and also points out possible strategies to overcome these barriers! Definitely worth a read! 📖 Emma, thank you so much for contributions. You have been such a valuable part of NIDISI for years, and we’re lucky to have you on board!

Working at NIDISI has been a source of inspiration in many ways. For example, it has played a significant role in shaping the topic of my master’s dissertation at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Titled “Bridge Builders or Boundary Crossers? The Dilemmas of Reflexive Cultural Intermediaries in Humanitarian Communications,” my research explores the role of humanitarian communication practitioners as intermediaries between the Global South and the Global North, examining the challenges they face in this process. The paper sets out an ideal framework while acknowledging the real-world complexities that communicators experience in their daily work. Together with NIDISI, I have decided to share the key findings of this research to highlight the challenges faced by humanitarian NGO communicators and to foster dialogue about the inherent opportunities within this role. A heartfelt thank you to Mara Heckmann, Celia Röthig, and Lukasz Urbaniak for your constant support and invaluable contributions, as well as to everyone who has supported me throughout the journey of writing this dissertation. Feel free to check out the article, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like to read the full dissertation or discuss the topic further! 💬

🍃 Our Sparsa Pads’ banana fibre is 100% pesticide-free—exceeding even the toughest safety standards! 🍃 We tested our banana fibre—the core absorbent of our pads—for pesticide residues, and the results are in: ZERO harmful pesticides detected across all samples from 2023 and 2024. 🚫🧪 🍌 The banana trunks we use come from diverse agricultural lands in Nepal and India, where various crops are grown. To ensure no harmful residues make it into our products, we tested raw and processed banana fibres for 18 pesticides commonly used in Nepal and India. To put it in perspective: Our fibres tested at less than 0.03 µg/kg, far below the EU’s strictest food safety thresholds (which rarely drop below 10 µg/kg). Together, we’re not just fighting period poverty—we’re ensuring that safety and sustainability go hand in hand. 🌍 #Sustainability #SafeProducts #PeriodPoverty #BananaFibre #Innovation

Yesterday, our team Dipisha Bhujel Sudha Dhakal Md. Hasnain Ansari Ashok Poudel proudly represented NIDISI and Sparsa at the Nepal International Cultural Film Festival 2025 in Kathmandu. 🥳 We participated in an inspiring panel discussion on #menstrualdiscrimination and #periodpoverty, moderated by Fabien Matthias, alongside menstural health professionals and advocates including Janina Breitling, Jan Schlenk and many more. 🩸🌸 We also showcased our fibers and Sparsa pads, walking attendees through the step-by-step process of making them. It was great to see so many visitors at our stalls! The festival featured powerful documentaries, including stories of Chaupadi in Nepal, menstrual stigma in Kenya, and even Buddhist nuns’ unique perceptions of menstruation. Truly inspiring! #NepalFilmFestival #MenstrualHealth #NIDISI #humanitycandobetter
