🌱What have Paris’ Olympics taught us about energy transition and sustainability so far? The Olympics in Paris came to an end last week, after two weeks of intense competition characterized by remarkable moments. It will go down in history not only as the first Olympics to have an outdoor opening ceremony, along the Seine River but also as the first edition to utilize 100% renewable energy from solar and wind sources (among others), powered in France. However, this is not the only action they took aligned with the energy transition and carbon emission reduction. ⚡️ Powering progress: 100% of the venues were connected to the public electricity network to limit the use and reliance on diesel generators. 🏢 Infrastructures and venues: 95% of the infrastructures were pre-existing or temporary, with only one new competition venue constructed, the Aquatic Centre (featuring seats made from recycled plastic bottle caps). 🥙 Responsible catering: At all Olympic venues a more sustainable diet was offered, with more plant-based food in meals, for less CO2. 🌳 Carbon offsetting: Paris 2024 has financed 4 forestry projects in France, for a value of €600,000 to offset unavoidable games-related emissions. The aim is to sequestrate 14,500 tonnes of CO2. 🔋Circular economy: 90% of equipment and goods will get a second life now that the Olympics are over. Paris 2024 has set an unprecedented benchmark for carbon footprint reduction in the Olympics, paving the way for future energy transitions in major sporting events.    At Phelas, we are actively participating in the energy transition by bridging the gap between renewable energy storage and power supply stability.
