Fifteen days after hosting the Barcelona International Community Day, yesterday we reunited with sponsors, exhibitors, and some of the speakers to take a look back on the outcome of the event and share our thoughts. Over the course of the morning, we shared some participation figures from BICD 2024: 5,122 people from 123 different countries had registered, with 72.80% of foreign origin, predominantly from France, the United States, and Italy. We also examined the visitor profile and shared the positive feedback from participants, with an overall rating of 8.14 out of 10. The event took place at the Espai Barcelona, a space set up by the City Council for hosting meetings and events with businesses and other economic agents during the America’s Cup. It is a very special venue on the 18th floor of Torre Mapfre that offers 360º views of the city. Yesterday, we also discussed this space and the positive impact of the America’s Cup on Barcelona. After screening a summary video and some photos of the Barcelona International Community Day, we enjoyed a bit of networking alongside the spectacular sea views. Thanks once again to all the people and companies that took part in this successful edition!

3 years in technology is a long time; in AI, some might call it prehistoric. Yet, the invisible dangers of stochastic parrots remain as relevant and pressing as ever. The rapid advancements in NLP have led to the development of massive language models like GPT-3, but as "On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots" by Emily Bender, Timnit Gebru, et al., warns, the pursuit of ever-larger models comes with significant risks: 🔴 Environmental and financial costs: Training these enormous models consumes tremendous energy, deepening environmental harm and creating financial barriers to entry for smaller players. 🔴 Ethical and social issues: These models are often trained on biased, internet-sourced data, which can propagate stereotypes and hegemonic worldviews, further marginalizing underrepresented communities. 🔴 Lack of real language understanding: While these models can generate coherent text, they lack true comprehension, misleading researchers and the public into overestimating their capabilities. 🔴 Call for responsible AI: The paper calls for a rethinking of AI development, urging more focus on creating well-curated, smaller datasets, prioritizing energy efficiency, and considering the social impacts of AI systems before deployment. Meta enters AI video wars with powerful Movie Gen set to hit Instagram in 2025. Movie Gen is the latest advancement in Meta’s ongoing AI research efforts. To train the models, Meta says it relied upon “internet scale image, video, and audio data,” specifically, 100 million videos and 1 billion images from which it “learns about the visual world by ‘watching’ videos,” according to the technical paper. https://lnkd.in/e-sKVAHk
