Bremerhaven has treated us well today! Our maritime delegation continued their tour of northern Germany and was kindly hosted by renowned Bremerhaven institutions. 🚢 First of all, we would like to thank the ISL - Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics, in particular Dr Nils Meyer-Larsen, Head of Maritime Security & Hydrogen, for putting together this exciting combination of green hydrogen sites and a container terminal tour in the Freie Hansestadt Bremen. Jochen Kreß, Head of Unit Environment and Climate Affairs, Freie Hansestadt Bremen - Der Senator für Wirtschaft Arbeit und Häfen, and Friederike Woltmann, Project Manager Hydrogen and PtX at ISL, warmly welcomed our delegation at the Fraunhofer-Institut für Windenergiesysteme platform of their unique electrolyser test field of the Hydrogen Lab Bremerhaven. Anna Heuschmann introduced the work of Fraunhofer IWES, one of 76 institutes and research facilities of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, as one of the world's leading organisations for applied research, continuously optimising #hydrogen technologies and thus advancing the #energytransition. Just yesterday, the first hydrogen trailer left the test site. The ttz Bremerhaven Technology Transfer Centre hosted our second stop of the day, highlighting its work as an independent research and development institution. Gerhard Schories, Head of Institute, and Ralf Lüken, Group Coordinator Innovative Energies at DS Energies Holding GmbH, gave us a tour of their laboratory and electrolyser. The plans for MariSynFuel, a large-scale #emethanol demonstration plant, including #renewablecarbon input from a nearby biogas plant, were presented as a great example of regional collaboration between different research and business institutions. EUROGATE Group kindly gave us a tour of their impressive container terminal in Bremerhaven, one of the largest in Europe, and shared some of their visions for decarbonising port operations. Andreas Wellbrock, Managing Founder of the start-up Green Fuels GmbH, gave the delegation a tour of the commercial green hydrogen production plant and the construction site of the future hydrogen filling station. As part of HY.City.Bremerhaven GmbH & Co. KG, a regional green hydrogen economy for clean mobility is being realised. Thank you for having us today!

Thank you to the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) for having us today for a breakout session at the IAPH World Ports Conference. Testimonials from India, Kenya and South Africa brought insights on the #defossilisation of #maritimetransport with a focus on the role of fuels, ports, and cooperation. After the Hamburg Sustainability Conference on Monday and Tuesday, our Kenyan and South African delegation continued their tour through Northern Germany. ⛴️ A boat tour in the Port of Hamburg, hosted by the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) Anstalt öffentlichen Rechts and attended by the International Maritime Organization's Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez, showcased the port's green ambitions. It is the third largest port in Europe, despite being 150 kilometres from the open sea. Three cruise terminals, which welcome 270 ships and 1 million passengers a year, are already supplied with electricity from the mainland. This is crucial as cruise ships require 15 MW and container ships about 5 MW. The world's largest container ships call at Hamburg as part of the Asia-Europe loop. It's the only loop where there is enough cargo to fill the largest container ships. Today we were welcomed by GP JOULE, a company pioneering the #greenhydrogen value chain 300 metres from the North Sea. Five electrolysers, integrated with wind farms, produce green hydrogen and supply local buses and trucks. A real regional ecosystem in Nordfriesland, which has become one of Germany's promising regions in recent years, largely due to the development of #renewableenergy. Companies like GP Joule can benefit from negative electricity prices when there is a surplus of electricity being produced. As renewable electricity is usually one of the main cost components for green hydrogen production, this significantly reduces the cost and creates a strong business case. A tour of the beautiful small town of Husum rounded off the day, demonstrating once again the region's close ties to #maritimetrade and the sea, as well as its centuries-old adaptation to environmental change and protection from floods and storms.

🌍 Happy #WorldHydrogenDay! 🌍 Our contribution to accelerating #greenhydrogen production, use and trade, goes beyond the element as such. We also look to fuels and feedstocks such as ammonia, methanol, and Sustainable Aviation Fuels #SAF. Why? Air traffic is expected to grow by 4% per year over the next 20 years. To reconcile this growth with the net zero goal set for 2050, we depend on sustainable aviation fuel. Power-to-Liquid fuels are the most promising pathway – but not yet readily available in the market. We contribute to the ACT-SAF programme of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), deliver aviation trainings to decision-makers and develop policy recommendations for countries to become Power-to-Liquid pioneers.  Maritime transport is responsible for 3% of global emissions. While demand scenarios expect global freight to double or triple by 2050, the sector is committed to achieving net zero emissions within the same timeframe. Like aviation, the shipping sector should consider e-fuels. The PtX-Hub facilitates the exchange of knowledge on e-fuels between policymakers, technology providers, ship owners, and others. In Morocco, we are developing a Power-to-liquid research plant in a consortium that will demonstrate the production of sustainable shipping and aviation fuels. #aviation #shipping

"Collaboration is key to #defossilise shipping, more so than for other sectors." Our high-level side event to the Hamburg Sustainability Conference today set out opportunities, challenges and existing solutions such as the H2Global Foundation for the transition to sustainable shipping. The recent World Maritime Day, with its focus on safety, made it clear from the outset that sustainable shipping is not just about climate action. It is also about issues such as safety, jobs and efficiency. There is no better place to discuss this than in Hamburg, a city with a long history of shipping, innovation and progress. It is crucial to create a level playing field for those pursuing sustainable shipping. European Union policies such as #REDIII and #REFuelEU provide important incentives to drive the transition to sustainable fuels. So are the National Action Plans (#NAPs) being developed by countries such as Germany and Kenya and Green Shipping Corridors. It was encouraging to hear about the concrete steps companies are taking to drive the #energytransition. They are actively building and retrofitting fuel terminals, bunkering and transport infrastructure. Ports are to facilitate the transport and distribution of greener energy in the future. They also need to adapt to climate change, such as to storms and sedimentation. Our panel discussion highlighted the need to align global, regional and national policies and to address existing inequalities. First movers need to take action, and the majority of shipowners with 5 to 10 ships should become aware of the transition and seize the opportunities it presents. 𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐨𝐧 "𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫-𝐭𝐨-𝐗 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞” 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐚.   Last week, the International PtX Hub in Argentina and CEARE - UBA Centro de Estudios de la Actividad Regulatoria Energética hosted a workshop on "𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫-𝐭𝐨-𝐗 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐚". The event presented several studies developed by the #PtX Hub Consortium in Argentina and brought together experts and stakeholders to discuss critical infrastructure needs for Argentina's emerging #hydrogeneconomy.
