Way to go, Norway! 🇳🇴 Norway’s new dietary guidelines now recommend eating a more plant-based diet and reducing meat consumption, following similar moves by Germany and Austria! 🌱 Some key updates include the reduction of maximum meat intake from 500g to 350g per week, and the protein group in the food wheel now contains legumes and tofu, with the suggestion of replacing some or all of the meat in certain dishes with beans or lentils. 🫘 The recommendations, made by the Norwegian Directorate of Health (Helsedirektoratet), were updated based on the link between nutrition and health, but do not explicitly take the environmental impacts of different foods into account. Despite this missed opportunity to emphasise the environmental benefits of plant-based foods, Norway’s decision is still a big step towards a more sustainable and healthy era of nutrition policy. Which other country should update their dietary guidelines? ⬇️ https://hubs.ly/Q02LSt1G0 #ProVeg #DietaryGuidelines #PlantBasedDiets

Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport – one of Europe’s largest international airports – has announced it will expand its plant-based food offerings to 60% by 2030. ✈️🌱 According to Schiphol, which also plans to become a zero-waste airport by 2030, 60% of the food offerings (by ingredient volume) will be plant-based, and will be announced as more sustainable options to consumers. The decision is expected to reduce the airport’s food emissions by 50% compared to 2023. While international flights still produce a heavy toll on emissions, passengers who are unable to travel by other means will be able to help offset their carbon footprint by eating more sustainable, plant-based meals. Paris 2024 was the most plant-based Olympic games ever! 🌱🏅 The Paris Olympics committee made a considerable effort to better embed sustainability in international sporting events, addressing climate concerns, farmers’ interests, and demands for more plant-based food, according to the BBC. ProVeg International’s CEO Jasmijn de Boo was quoted saying the target to serve twice as much plant-based food (than the average French person eats) is “very appropriate for an event in the global spotlight”, and is in line with France’s goals towards reducing meat consumption. The Olympics was also the world’s largest catering event, and its effort to serve plant-based options to athletes, staff, and spectators marked a milestone in promoting more sustainable, plant-rich foods at major events – a significant step forward amidst growing concerns about the role of food choices in fighting the climate crisis. Should the 2028 Olympics in LA go even further to embrace sustainability? Let us know in the comments! Here’s to more plant-based athletes reaching the podium! 🏟️ https://hubs.ly/Q02Ld6y_0 #ProVeg #Paris2024Olympics #PlantBasedCatering
