Portugal is the first country in the world to mandate at least one plant-based option in public schools, universities, hospitals, and prisons – a bold feat, only achieved after intense campaigning by the AVP! While the country is known for its high seafood consumption rates – the highest rate in all of Europe –, it is also home to a rich, diverse cuisine, based on fragrant spices, veggies, and delicious Portuguese olive oil. A huge breakthrough for cellular agriculture in the UK! 🧬🌱 The Food Standards Agency has received a £1.6m grant from the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology for a new programme to gather “rigorous scientific evidence” on cell-cultivated products (CCPs) and the technology behind them. The move is a key breakthrough for the sector and will help the UK to become world-leading in the development of cultivated products. This also provides a major opportunity to develop foods that are beneficial for the environment and could eventually be tailored to improve the UK’s diet once they reach mass production. What *is* biodiversity – and why is it important? 🤔🌍 From individual species to entire ecosystems, life on Earth takes many forms – and its delicate balance allows environments to thrive, and us humans to survive. 75% of the world’s food crops rely on pollination by bats, bees, and birds; animals and plants depend on preserving delicate food ecosystems and food chains; and human-made climate change threatens the survival of all living things on Earth – including us. Sweden takes it a step further! Research centre PAN Sweden has received €3.54M in funding from the Swedish government – an investment that seeks to boost plant-based proteins in Sweden! 🇸🇪🌱 Coordinated by Örebro University, the PAN Sweden consortium conducts interdisciplinary research on innovating plant-based proteins. One of its collaborators is the agricultural cooperative Lantmännen, who have recently invested €105M in a new pea and fava bean protein facility in the Swedish town of Lidköping. Fair enough! ⚖️🌱 The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has told France that banning “meaty” names for plant-based foods would confuse consumers and the market alike. The ECJ judge ruled that, while a ban on “meaty” names could be technically possible under certain, cumbersome conditions, the current EU legislation is already sufficiently capable of protecting consumers — and a ban would upset EU harmonisation. “We welcome the clarity given by the European Court of Justice in this judgement,” said Jasmijn de Boo, Global CEO of ProVeg International. “We now hope that the French court will take to heart what has been said about the disruption that a ban on “meaty” names for plant-based food will cause and dismiss the restriction accordingly,” de Boo said. The case against the French Decree was brought by the European Vegetarian Union, the AVF Ⓥ (Association Végétarienne de France), Protéines France, and Beyond Meat.
