💡 My learnings from the AIBC mission / EU delegation to Austin, Texas: Everything is bigger in Texas: the Capitol is taller than the one in Washington, D.C., 120,000 students in Austin alone, numerous universities with incredibly large campuses, the domestic market, start-up funding, salaries, rents in co-sharing, and also the recreational offerings with around 100 live bands in many pubs, parks, and market halls every evening on the weekends. Compared to the established hot spots in the Valley, NY, or Boston, Austin is certainly a good option due to the many skilled workers who, although somewhat more expensive, are still affordable by German standards. However, market entry is a financial challenge that requires solid financing with expected costs of $2M and higher. Raising capital in the US is possible, but for this, you should already be financially well-equipped. Accelerators often offer funding of $200K within their programs, primarily intended for seeking seed funding. The lectures and discussions on business model development methods were very interesting, particularly the realization of how strongly US monetization strategies generally differ from European approaches. The deep dives into service and after-sales business models also inspired me concerning my domestic offerings. I somewhat missed the deep technical exchange on AI and blockchain topics outside the group, such as with US companies and start-ups. Unfortunately, during the trip, we did not have the opportunity to participate in AI meetups or co-creation sessions, which I regularly attend and appreciate at STARTPLATZ – the offering is likely more diverse in the Valley. Thus, from the trip, I gained an excellent understanding of the peculiarities of entering the US market and the diverse offerings in the Austin region. Together with the contacts made there to politics, academia, and Dell, as well as the other start-up entrepreneurs from Europe, it was a very successful event that was very worthwhile for me. Thanks to the EU Commission for promoting this exchange, to Amelie Beutel and Miriam Pirra for the perfect organization before and during the trip, and last but not least to Juergen Jaehnert and Prof. Dr. Bernhard Koelmel for the initiative, the professional guidance, and the compilation of this compact and appealing program. 🚀 Thrilled to be selected for the EU-funded journey with 15 dynamic start-up and grown-up companies to Austin, Texas! Our trip in June 2024 has been packed with invaluable learning and know-how exchange. During this journey, we gained deep insights into potential market entry in the US, cutting-edge business development methods, and the current state of AI and blockchain technology in the US. We had the incredible opportunity to present our business ideas to various experts, student teams, and a group of European deep tech pioneers from Italy, Turkey, Romania, Norway, Ireland, and Germany. Highlights of our trip included: - Networking with US and European start-ups already established in Austin. - Visiting Dell, headquartered in Austin for over 30 years. - Sessions on product development through experimentation and innovative business models, particularly focused on service and after-sales revenue generation. - Engaging discussions at Texas State University with MBA classes specializing in AI for managers, business modeling, and innovation. - Learning from accelerators about start-up support for entering the US market. This journey provided us with a comprehensive understanding of the US market, the Austin region as a rapidly growing start-up hub, and the unique US approach to identifying market potential and scaling businesses. Moreover, meeting fellow founders from across Europe, the dedicated organizers from AIBC Euroclusters and Juergen Jaehnert bwcon and Prof. Dr. Bernhard Koelmel made this trip incredibly valuable.
