Head of SDG Research and Active Ownership at radicant bank | Sustainability & Sustainable Finance Expert | Experienced in Sustainability Strategy & Sustainability Management | Opinions my own

𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐍𝐞𝐭 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 #Building and #construction #materials are key components of the transition to a low carbon future and of achieving #netzero. They account for 9% of global GHG emissions, representing embodied emissions or #embodiedcarbon as the counterpart to operational emissions. As part of the Future of Construction 2024 symposium, I organized an industry workshop on "Scaling New Materials for Net Zero." The symposium was co organised by USI Università della Svizzera italiana and ETH Zürich. I was fortunate to bring together diverse stakeholders in the building and construction industry, each with valuable perspectives to accelerate the transition—from established companies and #solutionprovider startups to platforms and safe harbors for experimentation. We discussed existing solutions, emerging challengers, and ways to accelerate the transition and scale up the use of sustainable materials. Nabila Larasati Pranoto, #SustainableConstruction Specialist, presented Holcim's path to net zero, highlighting its strategy, sustainable products, and recent focus on integrating nature. She emphasized the importance of engaging suppliers early to specify low-carbon solutions. Götz Hilber, CEO & Co-Founder, from Rematter introduced their earth-timber floor slabs—a circular, low-carbon, cost-effective product. These prefabricated slabs are made with earth as a primary material, offering both environmental and social benefits. Thibault Demoulin, Co-Founder & Lead Technology, from Oxara discussed their cement-free, circular binders, created by combining Oxara's admixtures with clay or recycled demolition waste. Their solution, suitable for housing and infrastructure projects, is being implemented in partnership with Kibag, Erne, and Holcim. Kika Brockstedt, Co-Founder & CEO, from revalu introduced a materials platform providing environmental KPIs for building materials, helping stakeholders such as manufacturers, architects, developers, contractors, and investors make informed, low-carbon material choices. Chrissie Muhr, Co-Managing Director & Artistic Director, from Experimental Foundation presented innovative projects like the Basel Pavilion, Reset Materials exhibition in Copenhagen, and the Bauhaus Earth fellowship, which foster sustainable, regenerative architecture through practice-based experimentation. Finally, I introduced the perspective of radicant bank, a financial institution. While we know that climate change is happening and understand the path to net zero, with many solutions available today, the critical need now is to bridge the gap in action and #climatefinance. I am deeply grateful to the panelists who joined me in Mendrisio and to the conference organizers Ena Lloret-Fritschi, Selen Ercan Jenny, Prof. Dr. Silke Langenberg, Orkun Kasap, Sacha Cutajar and many others – for inviting me to lead this workshop. cc Guillaume Habert, Martin RÖCK, James Drinkwater, Felix Hilgert

How do we scale new materials for net zero? Yesterday I took part in a close-knit workshop with some great minds, as part of the Future of Construction 2024 Symposium. Together with Chrissie Muhr (Experimental Foundation), Götz Hilber (Rematter), Nabila Larasati Pranoto (Holcim), Thibault Demoulin (Oxara) and Sasha Cisar (radicant bank) we discussed the different perspectives and learnings around scaling new materials across the industry.
We looked at practical ways to bring emerging materials from niche to mainstream use and discussed the challenges and opportunities in this space. Building an ecosystem and platform with revalu addresses many of these challenges and i was glad to share our learnings. Its always wonderful and encouraging to connect with others working toward the same goals. Thank you Sasha Cisar for providing the opportunity, learning space and bringing us together in the sun 🌞 looking forward to whats next to come! USI Università della Svizzera italiana ETH Zürich

The recent JRC report provides clear steps to help designers make impactful choices from the start and embrace circular construction practices. Here are the main suggestions from the report: ➡️ Incorporate Circularity in Initial Design: Start designing with adaptability, disassembly, and material reuse in mind. Prioritise flexible layouts and modular construction, enabling buildings to serve evolving functions without requiring demolition. ➡️ Utilise Emerging Technologies: Embrace digital tools like BIM, Digital Twins, and Product Passports to enhance the traceability and lifecycle management of materials and structures. These technologies support better design decisions, making it easier to achieve circularity objectives. ➡️ Prioritise Circular Procurement: Select materials and products that meet circular criteria, such as high recyclability and low embodied carbon. This can help influence supply chains toward sustainability, creating and sustaining the demand for circular construction materials. revalu's platform and tools are designed to support architects, engineers, and other professionals in selecting materials that align with circular principles. Our material platform lets you browse thousands of materials and easily sift through the relevant data. Assessing the environmental impact of building materials from the earliest design stages is becoming critical for the construction industry. CREE BUILDINGS and revalu have come together to address this need by integrating revalu’s connect+ with CREE’s Embodied Carbon Estimator.

With revalu connect+, CREE can automatically import environmental data from revalu’s material cloud into their Estimator and set custom data quality rules, ensuring they’re using the most reliable and current information without the need for manual input. This integration allows for seamless scenario analysis, letting users compare material options, evaluate their environmental impact, and make informed decisions in a timely manner. Curious about the process?

Germany's National Circular Economy Strategy (NCES), introduced in 2024, focuses on boosting resource efficiency, reducing waste, and driving sustainable growth. It aims to halve per capita raw material consumption by 2045 and double the use of recycled and circular materials by 2030. Key initiatives include improving recycling processes, developing digital tools like the Digital Product Passport, and promoting innovations across sectors such as construction, automotive, and electronics. The strategy also strengthens economic resilience by reducing dependency on imported raw materials and fostering international collaboration. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eRk82mFW
