𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐍𝐞𝐭 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 #Building and #construction #materials are key components of the transition to a low carbon future and of achieving #netzero. They account for 9% of global GHG emissions, representing embodied emissions or #embodiedcarbon as the counterpart to operational emissions. As part of the Future of Construction 2024 symposium, I organized an industry workshop on "Scaling New Materials for Net Zero." The symposium was co organised by USI Università della Svizzera italiana and ETH Zürich. I was fortunate to bring together diverse stakeholders in the building and construction industry, each with valuable perspectives to accelerate the transition—from established companies and #solutionprovider startups to platforms and safe harbors for experimentation. We discussed existing solutions, emerging challengers, and ways to accelerate the transition and scale up the use of sustainable materials. Nabila Larasati Pranoto, #SustainableConstruction Specialist, presented Holcim's path to net zero, highlighting its strategy, sustainable products, and recent focus on integrating nature. She emphasized the importance of engaging suppliers early to specify low-carbon solutions. Götz Hilber, CEO & Co-Founder, from Rematter introduced their earth-timber floor slabs—a circular, low-carbon, cost-effective product. These prefabricated slabs are made with earth as a primary material, offering both environmental and social benefits. Thibault Demoulin, Co-Founder & Lead Technology, from Oxara discussed their cement-free, circular binders, created by combining Oxara's admixtures with clay or recycled demolition waste. Their solution, suitable for housing and infrastructure projects, is being implemented in partnership with Kibag, Erne, and Holcim. Kika Brockstedt, Co-Founder & CEO, from revalu introduced a materials platform providing environmental KPIs for building materials, helping stakeholders such as manufacturers, architects, developers, contractors, and investors make informed, low-carbon material choices. Chrissie Muhr, Co-Managing Director & Artistic Director, from Experimental Foundation presented innovative projects like the Basel Pavilion, Reset Materials exhibition in Copenhagen, and the Bauhaus Earth fellowship, which foster sustainable, regenerative architecture through practice-based experimentation. Finally, I introduced the perspective of radicant bank, a financial institution. While we know that climate change is happening and understand the path to net zero, with many solutions available today, the critical need now is to bridge the gap in action and #climatefinance. I am deeply grateful to the panelists who joined me in Mendrisio and to the conference organizers Ena Lloret-Fritschi, Selen Ercan Jenny, Prof. Dr. Silke Langenberg, Orkun Kasap, Sacha Cutajar and many others – for inviting me to lead this workshop. cc Guillaume Habert, Martin RÖCK, James Drinkwater, Felix Hilgert
