The KN Series image intensifiers from Rheinmetall Nordic are add-on units providing a night time capability to optical day sights.The night vision image is viewed through the eyepiece of the day sight. This allows the user to retain the same eye position, aiming reticle and magnification for both day and night use. Both the KN200 and the KN250 are compatible with 2nd and 3rd generation 18 mm image intensifier tubes, has a magnification of x1 in order to eliminate fine mounting tolerances to the host optical system. Supporting our Women´s Month initiative in South Africa, our plant manager Nolitha describes in the following how the organisation is developing women and is happy to share some advice. "My role as a Plant Manager is not just about managing the plant, but also about fostering collaboration with other departments. I strongly believe in the power of teamwork and work closely with the SHE (Safety Health and Environment), Process Engineering, Maintenance, and Quality departments to ensure legal compliance and improve plant Overall Equipment Efficiency to support the sales plan. The constant communication with the Supply Chain department about inventory management is also crucial, as without raw materials, the plant cannot operate. I believe everyone should be aligned with company goals and objectives and see the bigger picture. To ensure my team is aligned with the expectations, I communicate the demands and requirements and involve the team in the process of implementing the scheduled plan. At the beginning of the year I organised a Charge plant tour for the NQ (Nitroguanidine) team, the vision behind that tour was to show the team the bigger picture of the business and how the NQ team's work directly contributes to the success of the business. When it comes to my leadership style, I regard myself as a leader who is hard on standards and soft on people. I am glad to see that the future of women in Rheinmetall is bright and promising due to the diversity I am currently witnessing. We have women who are presently at GM level in Operations (Priya Mahabir) and HR (Agatha Tshabalala), Executive-level HR (Lulu Mzili), and other young women in Acting Executive positions (e.g., Bernice Adams in Process Engineering) to show that the organisation is developing women. Look at me as the woman plant manager. If I could advise the organisation on one thing, it would be to improve its culture; otherwise, its culture would eat strategy for breakfast. This Women’s Month, I would like to remind Women that you are born to multiply things. A woman has a nurturing nature. Let us use our natures positively and multiply this organisation's vision and mission. Utilise all available opportunities. Lastly, I quote Steve Jobs. “Your work will fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. From January 2026, Rheinmetall will be manufacturing exhaust gas recirculation valves (EGR valves) for a renowned car manufacturer for a period of six years until December 2031. The order was booked in June of this year and amounts to a low three-digit million euro sum. By winning this order, the Group will be able to continue to utilise its production capacity until 2031. The supply of spare parts has been agreed for a further 15 years after completion of valve production. Rheinmetall is supplying the customer as a tier 1 supplier. For the order, the current compact model of the EGR valve will be customised by Rheinmetall in the area of the connections. The valves will be installed in a vehicle in the manufacturer's commercial vehicle class. The cost-effective, fail-safe design and long service life of the component, which can also withstand high thermal and mechanical loads, are particularly important here. The recirculation of exhaust gases reduces pollutants in both petrol and diesel engines. For this purpose, exhaust gases are extracted behind the cylinders, channelled through the EGR valve and mixed back into the intake air. In this way, less oxygen enters the cylinders, which reduces the combustion temperature and the amount of nitrogen oxide can be reduced by up to 70 per cent - because the temperature level has a significant influence on the emission of harmful nitrogen oxides. Rheinmetall is a system partner for all questions relating to the precise control of the exhaust gas recirculation rate, regardless of whether diesel or petrol engines, passenger cars, commercial vehicles or industrial engines. The expertise portfolio ranges from high-pressure and low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation systems, cold-side or hot-side construction, "smart" or "non-smart", as well as metal or plastic housings. The products are customised to meet the needs of the customer. With AI and sensor technology from ProTecBird GmbH and software from the military sector, Rheinmetall and ProTecBird want to ensure the protection of red kites around wind turbines and at the same time contribute to the energy transition. Both companies have now announced the successful demonstration of the effectiveness of the AVES Wind anti-collision system for the protection of red kites around wind turbines, which was developed by ProTecBird by integrating Rheinmetall technology. With this milestone, the young technology start-up from Husum, which is specialised in the development and manufacturing of economical and species-specific anti-collision systems, has now overcome a significant hurdle for the energy revolution in Germany in partnership with Rheinmetall. The development of effective anti-collision systems (ACS) has been one of the biggest challenges in the operation of wind farms in areas with wind-sensitive bird species. The balance between technical feasibility and reliable species protection is of central importance for the planning processes in the construction of wind farms. With its AI-based AVES Wind anti-collision system, ProTecBird has succeeded in solving this problem by defining and demonstrating the requirements for an anti-collision system in terms of nature conservation, economics and technology for the first time. By doing so, the system offers an alternative to generalised shutdown regulations by providing a customised solution for wind farm-operators through species- and situation-dependent short shutdowns. As one of the federal states with the most wind power, Schleswig-Holstein is a pioneer in the establishment of forward-looking standards for anti-collision systems and their integration into approval procedures. On behalf of the Ministry of Energy Transition, Climate Protection, Environment and Nature of the Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein (MEKUN, Ger. for Ministerium für Energiewende, Klimaschutz, Umwelt und Natur), a committee was convened in September 2022 to develop a testing framework under the direction of the State Office for the Environment SH (LfU, Ger. for Landesamtes für Umwelt). This committee, consisting of a team of consultants (TÜV NORD, the Office for Biostatistics), ACS and wind energy manufacturers as well as stakeholders from nature conservation organisations and wind energy associations, developed a comprehensive testing framework for the validation of ACS by the end of 2023. On 8 August 2024, Tobias Goldschmidt, Minister of Energy Transition, Climate Protection, Environment and Nature of the Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein, announced the first nationwide testing framework for anti-collision systems. Today you can read why Janina Lemme sees her role in the core team of women@Rheinmetall as enrichment. Janina Lemme has been a part of the core team for over a year. She works at the Unterlüß site as an IT project coordinator. In addition to her expertise in the fields of IT and project management, Women@Rheinmetall is enriched by her proximity to employees in production. “It is important to me to reach more women in production and those without a computer workplace. This is something we want to work on. After all, we want to benefit from ideas from every individual in the company.” What is Janina Lemme’s wish for the future? “That employees recognize the value added of our network for the company. Especially at the beginning, we were often asked what we even hoped to achieve. But everything that we do is meaningful and goal-oriented.
