It was a real pleasure moderating this panel and also to participate in this highly interesting and timely conference - many thanks to Aspen Institute Germany for the great initiative. Regarding the youth and gender panel, one of my main takeaways was that besides all digital initiatives it is also important to continue working with good old fashioned exchange programmes. Making personal encounters and changes of context possible is crucial, experience is often as important as information.

🎯 Junge SOG Jahresversammlung in München! 🎯 Letztes Wochenende kamen die Junge SOG zur ersten Jahresversammlung in München zusammen und starteten parallel das Mentoring-Programm 2024/25. 🎉✨ Es war eine tolle Gelegenheit für die Junge SOG, sich auszutauschen und gemeinsam neue Strategien zu entwickeln. In Mini-Workshops wurden wichtige Ziele und Strategien der JSOG diskutiert, während die Mentees über den Erstkontakt mit ihren jeweiligen Mentor/innen reflektierten und darüber sprachen, was sie von ihrer Seite aus tun können, um die Zusammenarbeit so erfolgreich wie möglich zu gestalten. Zum Abschluss gab es einen Austausch darüber, wie individuelle Stärken noch besser in die Arbeit der JSOG eingebunden werden können. #Networking #Mentoring #JungeSOG #JSOG #Südosteuropa #München

Online Discussion | The Republic of #Moldova ahead of Fateful #Elections | October 17, 2024 | 16:00 CET On October 20, 2024 the Republic of Moldova will simultaneously hold presidential elections and a crucial referendum on the country’s EU accession. These elections constitute a litmus test for President Maia Sandu’s pro-EU policies and her Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS). The Republic of Moldova has recently achieved major successes on its EU integration path, with the opening of accession negotiations in December 2023. At the same time, Moldova is faced with increased hybrid warfare from Russia in the wake of Russia’s war against Ukraine. Furthermore, the Transnistria issue continues to loom large. The panel discussion will shed a light on the current atmosphere in the country, the key issues in the election campaign as well as on the security situation. Speakers will analyze current polling results and discuss potential scenarios of election outcomes and what this could mean for the future of the country, its EU accession process, and the Transnistria issue. Still reflecting on all the input from last week's Civil Society and Think Tank Forum (and nursing the cold that inevitably comes after big meetings and crowded flights). The two and half intense days featured important discussions across the board, and I am especially pleased that we saw a panel on gender and diversity, moderated by Kvinna till Kvinna's own Maja Stajcic Riza Aragon, with civil society input shared by Tania I. from Reactor - Research in Action. Thanks to the fish bowl format, Kvinna till Kvinna and partners, Women's Rights Center & Coalition Margins, also took the chance to highlight gender equality and women's rights across multiple panels.   Overall the days in Berlin made it very clear how important civil society is, for the aims of the Berlin Process as well as the EU Accession. Stakeholders and decision-makers, from Brussels - to Berlin - to the region, ought to listen. And of course, a big thank you to the organisers Aspen Institute Germany and Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft, looking forward to future cooperation!

  This week I joined the 62nd International Academic Week organized by South East Europe Association (Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft e.V.), where I had the honor to receive the SOG’s Award for Master Theses in the field of research on Southeast Europe. I am thankful to the selection committee for recognizing my ethnographic research on water infrastructures in rural Moldova. I also extend my deepest gratitude to the community in the north of Moldova where my research was situated, whose stories and resilience are at the heart of my work. It is my hope that this award reaffirms the need to support research that centers on the everyday realities of people, particularly in regions that bear the brunt of both environmental challenges and political marginalization.

(2/2) Kosovo - Zwischen Perspektiven und Perspektivlosigkeit? 🇽🇰 (2/2) Tag 3️⃣: Da sich #Kosovo gerade im Prozess des #Statebuilding befindet, wollten wir mehr über #Demokratie und #Selbstbestimmung auf nationaler Ebene erfahren 👩🏻⚖️ Richterin Remzije Istrefi gab uns Einblicke in die Arbeit des Verfassungsgerichts und erklärte, wie prägend der Einfluss des internationalen Rechtsverständnisses, vor allem in Bezug auf den Schutz von #Minderheiten, für den Staat ist 🗽 Auf den Besuch im Museum „House of Independence Dr. Ibrahim Rugova“ folgte ein etwa fünfminütiger Input von mir zum derzeit geschlossenen Nationalmuseum des Kosovos, in dem unter anderem die „Gottheit auf dem Thron“ (5700-4500 v. Chr.) - das Symbol von #Prishtina - aufbewahrt wird 📖 Nach einem kurzen Abstecher zur eindrucksvollen Nationalbibliothek debattierten wir mit der #Germanistik-Professorin Blerta Ismajli über das rege Interesse der Kosovaren an der deutschen Sprache, die vielen als Türöffner für ein besseres, zukünftiges Leben im „Westen“ gilt, wodurch das Fach somit aber auch zum #Braindrain-Katalysator wird ✊🏼 Mit den Aktivistinnen von Instituti QIKA sprachen wir über alltägliche Probleme kosovarischer Frauen, über Diskriminierung und #Femizid, beleuchteten aber auch positive Entwicklungen und erfolgreiche Projekte, bevor wir abends das autonome Kulturzentrum „ThermoKiss“ besuchten Tag 4️⃣: Da Kosovo die jüngste Bevölkerung Europas hat, interessierte uns ihre Lage zwischen Tradition und Moderne besonders 🚶🏻♂️ Auf dem „Metamorphosis Walk“ der Gruppe „Shtatëmbëdhjetë“ (17) begriffen wir Gebäude als Produkte sozialer Prozesse und redeten über die potenzielle Revitalisierung vernachlässigter und/oder verlassener Orte ☮️ Kushtrim Koliqi von den NGOs „Integra“ und „Barabar“ erzählte uns im Grand Hotel Prishtina, wie inter-ethnische Projekte (z.B. mit Serben, Roma usw.) im Kosovo realisiert werden und wie wichtig dabei die Prinzipien #Toleranz, #Gleichheit und #Fairness sind 🌈 Am späten Nachmittag unterhielten wir uns unter anderem mit Lend Mustafa über das oft sehr schwierige Leben sexueller Minderheiten im Kosovo, über Vorurteile, Drohungen, sowie ermutigende Momente Tag 5️⃣: Nach einer erfolgreichen #Exkursion gab es am Vormittag noch ein kurzes Wrap-Up und #Feedback-Gespräch 😕 Besorgniserregend fand ich den omnipräsenten, unreflektierten #UÇK-Kult und das häufige Hängen von 🇦🇱-Flaggen an kosovarischen Staatsgebäuden 😍 Es war unglaublich spannend, das intensive Zusammenspiel der Akteure auf so engem Raum verfolgen, passionierte Leute kennenlernen und den dynamischen Fortschrittsglauben verspüren zu können ❤️ #Faleminderit! - Vielen Dank an die Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft e.V. und die AG Exkursion um Valeria S., Sina Rothert und Zsófia Turóczy, sowie an alle anderen 🙌🏼 Mehr Infos zum Programm: https://lnkd.in/gUxBGBpK Interesse an einer #JSOG-Mitgliedschaft?: https://lnkd.in/d2YKaaRE ❗️Teil 1/2: https://lnkd.in/dPtzrBjB
