Bert’s next stop: South Africa After his adventures in Paris, #BalancingBert has touched down in Johannesburg! This time, he joined our service supervisor to visit Universal Fans, and what a fantastic experience it was! 🏭✨ Bert was on-site for the installation of a new balancing machine (HM50U1) and had the pleasure of observing the operators during their training. They were busy mastering the art of balancing a fan on the machine, and Bert couldn't have been more impressed! With our team based in Midrand, Johannesburg, Gauteng, we have a dedicated crew of five Schenck employees, including manager Koos Snyman and Supervisor Shawn Fynn. Together, they’re committed to providing top-tier support to our valued customers. Bert also met some wonderful customers, including Andre, Johan, and Ambrose, as they dove into hands-on training. One of our focuses in South Africa is on universal balancing machines for amateurs, ensuring that everyone leaves feeling confident in their skills. Bert's time in South Africa has been truly remarkable, but as always, his journey is not over. Where will he head next? The latest high-end motors must run faster and faster in order to deliver peak performance. To achieve this, the rotor design must be optimized to the maximum.   Therefore, it is essential to identify the weak points of the rotor. As explained in our prior video on rotor bursting, we are able to accelerate rotors far beyond their normal operating speed until they burst. The result is the maximum speed that the rotor was able to withstand. But what exactly can cause a rotor to fail?      To answer this, we need to film the rotor with a high-speed camera in slow motion at this specific moment of bursting, so that we can identify the exact location of a crack. What sounds so easy is actually extremely challenging - the burst happens in a fraction of a millisecond.    Our expert Peter Hintenlang from our spin testing team here at Schenck in Darmstadt shows you one of these exciting bursting attempts today.    Burst tests and more will be performed at our new Green Technology Center. You might be wondering 🤔 why the Schenck Consulting team plays with Playmobil?        Today, our expert Steven Böhling will show you how our Spin Testing System works - and therefore he is using a Playmobil toy.     As you can see with the toy carousel, the people are pushed outwards by centrifugal force. Every rotating part in a mechanical system shows the same reaction. The higher the speed, the more the material of the rotor expands, and its diameter increases. We call this phenomenon dynamic expansion. With our patented spin testing system, we are able to measure the expansion at any angular position of the rotor with an accuracy in the single-digit micrometer range up to the rated speed and even beyond.     But why is it important for you to know the expansion of your rotor?    In addition to ever faster speeds, the aim is to keep the gap between the rotor and its housing as small as possible. The danger here is that if the rotor touches the housing due to the expansion, this can lead to complete destruction.
