In aviation, unbalances pose a serious risk. When vibrations cause issues in the electronics or even in the vehicle’s structure, the consequences can be severe. A fatigue fracture on four wheels and on the road may have minor outcomes, but in the air, the situation is quite different... This is the challenge currently facing e-aircraft and eVTOLs ("electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing aircraft"). As we’ll be highlighting at the Electric & Hybrid Aerospace Technology Symposium on October 30th and 31st in Frankfurt, e-motors and their rotors, are exposed to extremely high centrifugal forces due to their high rotational speeds. To ensure that everything "runs smoothly," it’s best to involve our (balancing) experts right from the development stage of electric drives. Balancing begins at the moment of design! This way, the required processes can be considered in the construction of the rotating components. We can already estimate the potential unbalances in manufacturing during the drawing stage using geometric tolerancing. Once the first prototypes are produced, we test them at operating speed, overspeed, and maximum burst speed. For example, settlement effects due to weight-optimized designs can be measured, without the drive (e.g., the stators and control systems) even needing to be fully operational yet. Our Green Technology Center offers the perfect testing environment, along with the appropriate rotor fixtures for the balancing process and a specially developed mechanism to precisely and repeatably connect the shaft to the rotor. Our health days were once again a great success! In collaboration with Techniker Krankenkasse, we offered our employees various activities to promote their health in everyday (office) life and prevent health issues. After all, the health of our employees is a precious asset for us! 🙏 From bike fitting for cyclists, a neck check for the neck muscles and a diabetes risk test to a fascia check for frequent sitters - there was something for everyone: ✅ Bike fitting is ideal for anyone who cycles to work and wants to improve their health and fitness. The bike is ergonomically adapted to your body measurements, body structure and individual riding behavior. ✅ The Neck Check measures the endurance of the deep neck muscles and teaches exercises that help to relieve pressure on the cervical spine. ✅ The diabetes risk test is done without taking blood samples and uses UV light to scan the skin on the forearm. The result provides information about the potential risk of diabetes and enables preventive intervention. ✅ For those who sit a lot, the fascia check provides suggestions. During the check, fascia and mobility tests are carried out in order to create a tailored training program with or without aids. When you test your rotor for the first time at rotation and high centrifugal forces, you want to know exactly what happens to it. When do the first effects or changes happen? When might parts come loose? Do cracks appear?    While performing spin tests like overspeed tests or cycle tests, we can optionally add a high-definition camera. This camera gives us a live view of the rotor throughout the test and allows us to observe the smallest changes in detail, such as parts shifting or even loosening.    For even more detail, we can also take high-definition snapshots, which are taken between the individual inspection steps at a standstill. To ensure a rotor does not break when in range of its intended rotational speed, it is important to know its speed of failure. For this purpose, burst tests are designed. Congratulations to Florian – our best apprentice in summer 2024! Florian started his apprenticeship as a mechatronics technician at Schenck RoTec in August 2021 and has shortened his training to 3 years due to his outstanding performance. Precision in the construction materials industry: A practical insight! Recently, Christian Ziegler shared an interesting insight into a project at Wassmer Spezialmaschinen GmbH. The team is using our #SmartBalancer4 to minimize vibrations on a surface grinding machine for construction bricks.  After just the second adjustment, the vibration levels were reduced to under 0.1 mm/s RMS — significantly below the ISO threshold of 1.4 mm/s, which is considered the standard for new machines! Thanks to this precision work, construction bricks can be processed cleanly and efficiently. This not only ensures high-quality products but also significantly increases erection speed at the construction site.
