The League of Extraordinary Cell Types - Immune System: T-cells 🪖 T-cells, also known as T-lymphocytes, are major contributors to the adaptive immunity in vertebrates. They send signals to the immune system to safeguard the body against threats such as viruses, bacteria, allergens and even cancerous cells. ❤️🩹 Cytotoxic T-cells and helper T-cells are the predominant types of T-cells that keep the host healthy by fighting all sorts of infections. Cytotoxic T-cells are toxic for their targets and helper T-cells help other immune cells. 🦴 T-cells originate from the bone marrow progenitor cells and migrate towards the thymus. T-cells derive their name from the thymus where they mature and differentiate into different types of T-cells. 🤢 Some common abnormalities of T-cells include DiGeorge syndrome, which prevents healthy T-cell production; Hodgkin lymphoma, cancer of the lymphatic system; AIDS/human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) which attacks the CD4+ T-cells. 💉 A major breakthrough towards the new treatment paradigm is the chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy. CAR T-cell therapy is a form of immunotherapy that genetically alters a patient’s own (autologous) T-cells to fight against cancer. Stay tuned to learn more extraordinary cell types! Excited to be speaking at the 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 event in Jena at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology this Friday. As I was putting together my talk, I realized that.. ..while I was creating opportunities for myself as a #WIS through Sci-Illustrate and Endosymbiont , the last 6 years also helped me create opportunities for many other WIS in the realm of science communications. I believe, that is the magic of entrepreneurship and passion projects. Creating value in many dimensions. Our Sci-Illustrate Stories WIS initiative (link in comments) remembers and has highlighted the scientific and personal stories of 75 women scientists so far. Our articles have generated over 100K views till date. -> 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝟱 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗪𝗜𝗦. I was in my happy place doing this project. ✨ It was the perfect blend of scientific depth, an illustrative challenge, and to have a guide like Prof. Regina Armstrong with her infectious love for science in all its beautiful complexities. What a privilege to work with Prof Regina towards creating the scientific illustrations for an in-depth review on white matter damage in TBI, recently published in Trends in Neuroscience, Cell Press. Thank you very much for the opportunity! :) Check out the entire case study on our Endosymbiont website. link in comments. ______________________________ More info on the article below. TBI damages neurons and long axons within white matter tracts that are critical for communication between brain regions; this causes slowed information processing and neuronal circuit dysfunction. This review focuses on white matter injury after TBI and the multifactorial processes that underlie white matter damage, potential for recovery, and progression of degeneration. A multiscale perspective across clinical and preclinical advances is presented to encourage interdisciplinary insights from whole-brain neuroimaging of white matter tracts down to cellular and molecular responses of axons, myelin, and glial cells within white matter tissue. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁'𝘀 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 Over the years, I've had lesser and lesser time to work on personal projects. But now and again a week here and there opens up and i can quench that feeling of creating something that probably should exist in this world. Like this ball pit. Want to play? Here is a small snapshot of what our students were able to achieve in two days! We are SO proud! ✨❤️ It is a sweet sweet feeling when you are able to translate something in your mind into the real world. And when participants realize that this superpower is finally within their reach, there is electricity in the air. It's hands down the best part of the two-three days we spend with them! Registrations to the Sci-Illustrate Masterclass are open now on our Sci-Illustrate website! Link in comments. Join us to discover the potential of Adobe Illustrator to level up your scientific illustration skills for work and play! Sci-Illustrate Endosymbiont #sciart #online #workshop

Linda Buck (1947 – present) Linda identified the molecular basis of olfaction, i.e. the sense of smell, unraveling a long-held mystery. Linda’s work identified a family of odorant receptor genes belonging to the G protein-coupled receptors. The receptors are located in the olfactory neurons of the nose, & when an odorant is attached an electrical signal is sent to the brain. A receptor can identify only a small number of odor molecules that result in a specific smell that the brain registers. Growing up in Seattle, Linda did not foresee becoming a scientist. She found her calling in research during her BS from the University of Washington, & moved to the University of Texas, Dallas for a PhD in Immunology. She became fascinated by the nervous system during her postdoctoral work in the Axel Lab at Columbia University, New York. She continued her research on the olfactory system in her own lab at Harvard Medical School between ‘91-‘01. In 2004 Linda jointly received the Nobel Prize in Physiology & Medicine with Richard Axel. She is currently working at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. Linda is a strong proponent of Basic Sciences & maintains that Translational Science stands on the strong foundations of knowledge built by basic science research. 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻: In my early days of starting Sci-Illustrate, I came by an organization led by key individuals who had the goals of enriching the European STEM network and supporting STEM professionals in taking the next steps in their career and personal development. Having recently navigated my own professional transition, this was a topic i cared deeply about, and meeting Dr. Mayur Vadhvani and Jubin Shah, PhD with their passion for bringing networks together cemented our collaboration. It was 2019, when they had EuroSTEMPeers in Berlin, and I had the privilege of designing their logo, conference identity and some collateral. I'll link below in comments if you want to see what i came up with. In 2023, I was invited to share my professional journey as a speaker. Fast forward to 2024, i was so proud to continue the tradition and support their mission as a sponsor of speaker gifts. I included some of my favorite art from a recent personal art series called Feelings. (link in comments if you are curious). Hope you all liked the gifts! 😊 We also gave out Discount coupons to our upcoming Sci-Illustrate Masterclass! (registrations open, link in comments!) My favorite part about Eurostempeers has always been the wide spread of topics, panel discussions and meeting participants from such diverse professional disciplines in STEM, and of course, meeting old friends and new, every year, and always having a blast! A big thank you again to the organizers for putting together such a wonderful conference. Here is to many more collaborations and I hope to see you all again next year! _______________________________ Hi there, I run a science communication and design agency serving Biotech, Life Science, Research and Healthcare. 🧬 We excel in design, art, and visual science communications.
