In 1998, two physicists at the University of Heidelberg, Dr. Steffen Noethe and Matthias Gerspach, made a once-in-a- lifetime discovery. Last week, we gathered in Heidelberg for our International Sales Meeting—a fantastic opportunity to connect with our sales colleagues and welcome valued affiliate partners from LEONHARD KURZ, who traveled from across the globe to join us. Our sales teams shared key insights from current customer projects, while the product and business development teams updated us on the latest innovations. Steffen Dr. Scheibenstock of SCRIBOS – a KURZ company, our market-leading daughter company specializing in anti-counterfeiting solutions, developed a unique and multifaceted product protection strategy for our award-winning honey packaging. A two-factor authentication system protects the product in the following ways: Factor 1: The scan of the ValiGate® security feature informs the consumer immediately if the product is genuine or counterfeit Factor 2: The consumer receives an image showing a three-digit metallized code and a bee with a specific design, orientation, and position. The consumer then can compare the displayed position of a bee on their smartphone with the bee on their packaging to verify its authenticity. Each bee’s position and orientation are unique, providing an additional layer of security. This gamified approach encourages consumers to engage with the packaging and verify its authenticity, similar to a slot machine where each product has a different combination of symbols indicating authenticity Additionally, variable design elements, such as bee position and orientation, and different honeycomb patterns, make each package unique and nearly impossible to replicate. In combination it becomes a testament to the power of combining embellishment, digital printing, variable design and advanced security elements for brand protection. Meet the team behind our German Packaging Award-winning honey project: Steffen Dr. Scheibenstock, our Head of Digital Business Development! 🐝 Our Steffen played a key role in the project, responsible for devising a anti-counterfeiting strategy for our honey product. Counterfeit honey is a growing global problem. 🌍 A staggering 46% of honey tested in the EU was found to be counterfeit, affecting all types of honey, not only premium varieties like Manuka. In Germany alone honey ranks as the 6th most counterfeited product. To address this challenge, Steffen developed a strategy consisting of three key components: - A unique, copy-proof security feature 🔐 - A consumer-friendly feature that can be easily verified without the need for specialised technology. 👥 - A reliable system empowering brand owners to identify counterfeits promptly and take action. 💻 Steffen's innovative strategy has not only established a new benchmark in the industry but also guarantees the authenticity and trustworthiness of our honey products among consumers. Follow the bees, illustrated in great detail by hand, and experience how they diligently collect pollen particles, which are tactilely refined in shiny gold with LUXOR® 220. These small details are a reminder of how laborious and valuable their work is - just like the ‘liquid gold’ that awaits you inside: Honey in a transparent jar, which is already visible through filigree cut-outs on the label. A special highlight: Each package is unique thanks to innovative HP technology. The positioning, number and size of the bees vary with each print. It is as if each packaging tells its own story – inspired by nature. When you open the packaging, you look directly into the beehive from above. The embellishment with our luxuriously shiny LUXOR® 220 and beautifully holographic LIGHT LINE® Laser creates new plays of color and light every time you look at it, reminiscent of the sparkling play of honey in the sunlight. Julia, who is familiar with the topic of beekeeping through her family, wanted to share her fascination for these small creatures and take people on a journey to see the production of honey. Inspired by the filigree beauty of bees, she designed the packaging as a beehive that takes you to the inside where the sweet honey is produced and stored.
