Are e-waste laws falling behind our rapidly changing tech? 📈 As technology advances, so do the challenges of managing #eWaste. From e-cigarettes and electric vehicles to smart clothes and furniture, the variety of #electronics we use is growing fast. However, most #recycling targets remain weight-based, missing critical raw materials like lithium and indium. Another challenge lies in moving up the waste hierarchy towards #wasteprevention, #repair, and #reuse. Unfortunately, specific targets are still rare here. ➡ Explore the latest findings and see what needs to change: https://lnkd.in/eytR2Aci #sustainability #circulareconomy

Let's learn about e-waste trends in the Andean region 🌎 Efforts are underway to improve #eWaste management in the #Andean, with new laws and international agreements aimed at reducing environmental risks. Colombia is expanding its regulations to cover new devices like e-bikes, while Ecuador has set up a comprehensive legal framework for managing e-waste. Peru is pushing forward with stricter collection targets, and Bolivia is holding producers accountable for #wastemanagement. However, challenges remain, especially in the informal e-waste sector where unsafe practices are common. 📌 Check out the Global E-waste Monitor for more: https://lnkd.in/eytR2Aci #sustainability #circulareconomy #environment #recycling

Turning e-waste into gold 💰 Read a new BBC piece with data from the Global E-waste Monitor to learn how the Royal Mint is turning old electronics into gold. At their new plant in Wales, old circuit boards are processed to extract gold, initially used for jewelry and later for coins. This #urbanmining method uses a #recyclable chemical solution, making it eco-friendly and efficient. With the UK being the second-largest producer of tech trash per capita, the Royal Mint wants to process over 4,000 tonnes of #eWaste annually, generating up to 450kg of gold worth around £27 million. This initiative helps the #environment, preserves jobs, and keeps valuable materials in the UK. 🔗 The article: https://lnkd.in/eA79hSHT 🔗 The Global E-waste Monitor: https://lnkd.in/eytR2Aci

Read the new C&EN piece on e-waste recycling featuring fresh data from the Global E-waste Monitor 🌏 Experts agree that recycling should be the last resort. Designing products for longevity, ease of #reuse, and #repair is crucial. Kees Baldé, scientific specialist at SCYCLE - Sustainable Cycles and lead author of the report, points out a major issue: poor #eWaste recycling due to a lack of legislation on collection, management, reuse, and recycling. Even countries with existing laws often don't require the extraction of critical metals. 💡 Startups and innovative technologies are key in improving e-waste recycling. By using advanced methods like urban mining and biological processes, they aim to reclaim valuable materials, reduce #environmentalimpact, and support the shift to #greenenergy. 🔗 The article: https://lnkd.in/g5dRQYk5 🔗 The Global E-waste Monitor: https://lnkd.in/eytR2Aci

How Digital Product Passports can transform businesses? 🤔 Digital Product Passports (DPPs) are set to provide detailed, real-time information about a product’s lifecycle detailed, real-time information about a product’s lifecycle. 💡 They aim to help businesses cut costs by optimizing resource use and streamlining supply chains. DPPs will also open doors to new business models like Product-as-a-Service and refurbishing programs, boosting profits and fostering customer loyalty. ⬇️ Find out more about the benefits of DPPs and their potential in driving sustainability and transparency.
Have you met Elise Vermeersch, Elena Fernández Cubillo, and Kees Baldé from United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)/SCYCLE - Sustainable Cycles? They are leading the project's stakeholder engagement and training activities, which have two main goals: to define the necessary information for a Digital Product Passport (DPP) and to promote the use of DPPs and RE-criteria within the value chain.
