Once upon a time, there was a girl from a small state in the south of Austria, the daughter of a hard-working car body repairman and a supportive mum, and the sister of 3 older hard-working siblings, hearing the sentence: As long as you are good enough at school, you can continue going there. Even though she was never sure about it by herself, she seemed good enough to successfully finish school, Bachelor, Master, PhD, and Habilitation. A first-generation academic was on her way to the unknown. And now, how are you supposed to announce reaching even the last step, this (seemingly almost unattainable) life goal? A moment that you have worked so hard towards for years, invested and dedicated so much time and passion, and given up so many other interests and activities, your home country, and being near your loved ones. There might be no "right" way of doing it besides the (slightly boring) version of "being thrilled to announce...", so let's allow "personal me" to write these lines:    Yippiii, the day has come. I made it! 🥳🎉🥂 *happydance* 🌟 I am super excited that from 1.4. 2025 on, I will join Universität Regensburg as a Full Professor (W3) for Programming and Software Engineering at the Faculty of Informatics and Data Science. I'm looking forward to working in Regensburg on great topics with super nice and smart colleagues - my first impressions in research, teaching, and administration have already been very promising!   ❤️ A big thanks to my amazing mentors and long-standing supporters Heinrich C. Mayr and Bernhard Rumpe, my friends and colleagues at RWTH Aachen University and my Alma Mater Universität Klagenfurt, and all my international research collaborators, friends, and supporters in private life. Seeing that you are (a bit) proud of me makes me even more happy!   Now, while the professional me is super excited about my new role, the personal me is yet a bit nervous about the unknown - but I have learned if you fear it, is it worth the shot. And I am honestly sad to leave my amazing colleagues and friends at Software Engineering - RWTH Aachen University. I remember that was already quite hard leaving my friends and colleagues behind when I moved from Klagenfurt to Aachen. In general, I am more excited and happy than anything else and super curious about what the next months and years will bring!    Last but not least: If you know talented students or a PostDoc who wants to work with me on MDE, Digital Twin Engineering, and Assistive Systems and teach in a German CS Bachelor, let me know. „Der Digitale Zwilling wird zum profilbildenden Element der Ingenieurwissenschaften an der RWTH Aachen!“ 👥 🙌 Wir freuen uns über die tolle interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit mit den Lehrstühlen im Profilbereich Production Engineering (#ProdE)! ✅ Schon im Sommer hatte Professor Thomas Bergs in seiner Rolle als Sprecher des Profilbereichs die dazugehörigen Lehrstühle aufgerufen, ihre Aktivitäten rund um den Digitalen Zwilling in der Produktion hochschulweit zu bündeln. 🗓️ Zur Vollversammlung am 21. November war es nun soweit, die Neuigkeiten, die sich nach dem Start dieser Initiative ergeben hatten, miteinander zu teilen. Die begonnene Schärfung des Profils wurde im Profilbereich sehr positiv aufgenommen. Während der zweistündigen Vollversammlung fasste Thomas Bergs zunächst die aktuellen Aktivitäten und Veranstaltungen des Profilbereichs zusammen und stellte dann das Konzept für das weitere Vorgehen vor. Dieses war in der Zwischenzeit durch das Steering Committee auf Grundlage des Workshops zum Start der Initiative erarbeitet worden. Es folgten vier kurze Impulsvorträge von Prof. Julia Kowalski vom Lehrstuhl MBD - Methods for Model-based Development in Computational Engineering at RWTH Aachen University, Prof. Tobias Kleinert vom IAT der RWTH Aachen University, Dr. Judith Michael in Vertretung für Prof. Bernhard Rumpe vom Lehrstuhl für Software Engineering - RWTH Aachen University und von Prof. Thomas Bergs für das #MTI. 💡 Sie beleuchteten damit jeweils verschiedene Perspektiven auf das Themengebiet und sprachen über ihre Beiträge zur Kooperation innerhalb der Hochschule. In einer lebhaften und sehr konstruktiven Diskussion bekräftigten die Teilnehmenden ihren Wunsch nach Fortführung und Ausweitung der Aktivitäten und gaben weitere wertvolle Impulse zur Weiterentwicklung des Profilbereichs. We have contributed to this book with the chapter "Model-Based Engineering of Multi-Purpose Digital Twins in Manufacturing" together with my co-authors Malte Heithoff, Nico Jansen, Dr. Florian Rademacher & Bernhard Rumpe from the Chair of Software Engineering - RWTH Aachen University. Our chapter shows how to apply model-driven engineering (#MDE) methods to developing #DigitalTwins. Specifically, we present the necessary architectural components required for developing reusable digital twins supporting multiple purposes, as well as some data-to-model and model-to-model transformation methods that can be applied to digital twin engineering. We illustrate the architecture with several use cases from the manufacturing domain and compare our reference architecture concepts with the ones of the Digital Twin Consortium reference architecture and the concepts of the ISO-23247 standard. I'm very happy that our article "Digital Twin and the Asset Administration Shell: An Analysis of 3 AASs Types and their Feasibility for Digital Twin Engineering" got accepted in the International Journal on Software and Systems Modeling (SoSyM) 🎉 💎 We addressed this topic with Jingxi Zhang, Carsten Ellwein, Malte Heithoff, and Andreas Wortmann because we were curious to find out how well the provided #AssetAdministrationShell specifications and technologies of the IDTA - Industrial Digital Twin Association and related projects and publications can contribute to the systematic #SoftwareEngineering of specific components of a #DigitalTwin, e.g., their #DigitalShadows. 💡 The short answer: It depends on the type (there are 3). The longer one: Each type (they build on each other) provides different parts relevant for digital twin engineering, especially the data and interoperability aspects. To create a fully functional digital twin with added value services, additions seem to be needed. 🔜 More details and a pre-print for the article are coming soon (but reach out to us if you want to know more right now).
