October 3 is Germany's National Day, or the German Unity Day – Tag der Deutschen Einheit. The day has been celebrated since 1990, in memory of the reunification between West and East Germany. It was also then that Berlin became Germany's new capital. Before the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, few West Germans even knew the date of their nation’s founding (May 23, 1949). East Germany’s national day was October 7, remembering the founding of the socialist German Democratic Republic in 1949. Unlike patriotic celebrations in other countries, most people in Germany do not display German flags or attend military parades for Unity Day.
