🍄 Biodiversity protection needs to include the protection of fungi! A historic step for biodiversity is in the works at COP16 in Cali, Colombia, where the UK and Chile will propose that fungi be recognized as an independent kingdom—"funga"—alongside flora and fauna. This proposal could really revolutionize conservation by acknowledging fungi’s foundational role in environmental health, climate resilience, and ecosystem dynamics. 🍄 Why Fungi Matter: Fungi are the hidden architects of our ecosystems. They sequester a third of carbon emissions, support plant life, and break down pollutants. Yet only 0.4% of fungal species have been assessed for conservation. As Alexandre Antonelli of Kew Gardens says, fungi are "the next frontier of diversity science." From yeast in bread to life-saving antibiotics, their contributions extend far beyond nature. 🍄 If adopted, the UK-Chile pledge could pave the way for global fungal protection, influencing environmental laws and conservation policies. Chile is already leading the way, requiring fungi assessments in environmental impact studies—a model the UK and other countries could follow. It is really great to see that the fundamental role fungi play in sustaining life on Earth is finally recognized. At Soilytix, we have long been trying to decode the fungal life below our feet and visualizing the ecosystem services these networks provide. 🌍🍄 Bruno Steinkraus Dr. Hannah Schragmann Berenice Di Biase Matthias Schaks Shamina Imran Pathan Isabella Staudinger #COP16 #Biodiversity #Fungi #Funga #OneHealth #Conservation #Sustainability

🌱 There is no human health separate from planetary health! This is exactly what the #OneHealth approach highlights: We know that microbiomes have profound connections to human, animal, and plant health. Soil, as one of the planet's largest microbial reservoirs, directly shapes the health of all living beings through its vast diversity and interaction with other ecosystems. Key insights of an interesting study by Banerjee & Van der Heijden on One Health: 🐑 Grazing animals like sheep unintentionally consume soil, gaining beneficial microbes that support gut health, immunity, and disease resilience. Here, microbes from biodiverse soils may reduce inflammation and help prevent allergic reactions. This microbial transfer, from soil to animals to humans, underscores soil's role in broader health. 👨👩👧👦 Soil microorganisms influence human health indirectly—plants enriched by soil microbes yield nutrient-dense crops, while humans exposed to natural soils may have improved immune resilience. This biodiversity buffer reduces allergy risk and enhances gut health. ⏰ We see great threats to Microbial Diversity: Climate change, agricultural intensification, and soil degradation reduce beneficial microbial diversity, threatening these health benefits. Sustainable soil management can help retain these crucial microbes. At Soilytix, we analyze soil microbiomes to help agricultural and environmental sectors preserve this interconnected health web. Supporting soil health isn’t just about plants—it’s a commitment to One Health for animals, humans, and our planet. 🌍🌱 Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/eWzt9jij Bruno Steinkraus Dr. Hannah Schragmann Berenice Di Biase Shamina Imran Pathan Matthias Schaks Isabella Staudinger #OneHealth #SoilMicrobiome #AnimalHealth #HumanHealth #Sustainability #GutHealth

I’m really looking forward to present Soilytix and talk about the importance of soil biodiversity and reproductivity at the World Living Soils Forum 2024, co-organized by Moët Hennessy and ChangeNOW, next week Oct8-9 in Arles! With 40% of the world’s soils degraded, the urgency for regenerative solutions has never been greater. We need to change the paradigm from productivity improvements to reproductivity restoration, particularly in agriculture. The WLSF is a great opportunity to showcase innovations that focus on restoring soil health while bringing people together. 600 global changemakers and 190+ speakers will be present —from experts and innovators to farmers and investors. And this is crucial since we need interdiscplinary to tackle this urgent issue. Come and speak to me in case you are there! #WLSF24 #reproductivity #biodiversity #soilhealth Bruno Steinkraus Shamina Imran Pathan Berenice Di Biase Matthias Schaks UpLink - World Economic Forum

🌱 "𝗔 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗶𝗹 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 14 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗼𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆." This is what a new study says. How? Microorganisms provide healthy water and nutrients and help to store carbon, contributing enormously to the fight against climate change. In just one gram of soil, live up to one million fungi and one billion bacteria. More than half of the Earth’s species live in the soil and these tiny organisms are crucial, not just for the health of our soils but for the survival of our ecosystems and, ultimately, us. We need to start prioritizing soil health management and start from the ground when thinking about land management. This does not just make ecological sense - but also economical! We are already paying now the costs of centuries of bad soil management. It's time to shift our thinking and start the transition to reproductivity - ultimately benefitting everyone. A big thank you to Thierry Malleret and Mary Anne Malleret-Broom-Smith for having invited me to present Soilytix and the topic of soil health at the gala dinner of the 10th edition of the Summit of Minds! The conference was truly unique: Its setting before the breathtaking mountains of Chamonix, the diversity of interesting people, the extremely relevant program about tech, society, environment, economics and politics which also took place in the mountains and of course the kindness of the hosts (Monthly Barometer) created an atmosphere in which it was possible to speak honestly and inspire lasting change. Thank you for inviting start-ups which contribute to nature restoration & conservation and for literally giving soil a stage! Why is this much needed? In just one gram of soil, live up to one million fungi and one billion bacteria. More than half of the Earth’s species live in the soil and these tiny organisms are crucial, not just for the health of our soils but for the survival of our ecosystems and, ultimately, us. #soilhealth #soilbiodiversity #reproductivity #productivity

After two years of participating at the Future Forest Forum, I felt very honored to join this year as a speaker! Yesterday, I discussed with my fellow panelists how we can drive finance for biodiversity, how the emerging biodiversity market can work in practice and how we can learn from mistakes made in the carbon market. Thanks Lucas von Fürstenberg, Andreas Heger, Dr. Benjamin Kowalski and Ole Seidenberg for a great debate including perspectives of forest owners, the insurance industry, start-ups and from philosophy. Key insights: 🤝Equal sharing of benefits will determine if biodiversity markets can actually benefit the local communities and indigenous people managing most of our lands. 🌍We need system’s change: While markets can mobilize necessary private finance, this is not enough. We need to move from an extractive, solely productive, to a reproductive system. 🌱Soil hosts more than half of the globe’s species, yet is not accounted for in most biodiversity methodologies – we need to change that, using our soils’ ability to react to changes quickly to drive decision-making and determine sustainable practices (like we do Soilytix ). 📒Which are the right methodologies that are robust enough to avoid leakage and false claims, but practical enough to allow stakeholder communication and allow easy application by local communities, is yet to be answered. 🕸️We need to think in functionality and resilience – rather than wanting to conserve a special species mix which holds emotional value to us, we need to restore ecosystems to be resilient and dynamic, thus able to deliver the functions needed to sustain our common future. After a great few days in Amsterdam at the Regenerative Agriculture Summit Series, it is wonderful to again see so many practitioners, corporates, innovators and scientists come together to discuss system-level change. What is clear: The question is not: HOW do we pay for the switch from productivity to reproductivity? Because we are ALREADY paying for decades of short-term focus on economic productivity gains. It is clear that regenerative forestry as well as regenerative agriculture are the future. And dialogue is the first step towards change – thanks Future Forest Initiative for opening the room for dialogue in this great conference year after year. This morning, I will co-host a MasterClass on good stakeholder communication in forestry – join me if you are there 💚 #Reproductivity #Regeneration #Biodiversity #SoilHealth
