This talk presents the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) “Li+Fluids” project, which evaluates the applicability and sustainability of #Lithium #extraction methods, with the goal of a zero-emission process. Field experiments in the North German Basin and modeling studies explore the "geological sustainability" of lithium extraction, including evaluating the re-enrichment potential of depleted fluids through fluid-rock interactions during #geothermal operations. With an installed capacity of 16.7 GWe today, the global power generation market is poised to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of 8% between now and 2030, marking a steep rise from previous years. With new countries foraying into this sector, Rystad Energy expects geothermal to play a small, yet significant role in the future global power mix. The primary growth engine for the medium-deep to deep geothermal heating market is #Europe where we expect installed capacity to reach upwards of 8 GWt by the end of this decade. These ambitious growth plans would require drilling of close to 1,400 wells between 2024-2030. Coupled with disruptive technologies improving its scalability, this market is well on its way to become a multi-billion industry for suppliers. Edna Michelle Bisso Bi Mba (Wintershall Dea), Section Chair, has been honored with the prestigious 2024 Giovanie Paccaloni Young Professional Service Award. This SPE international award is not just a statement for Edna’s exceptional leadership skills but also a reflection of her passion for the energy industry and for helping others to reach for more. This well deserved recognition will be presented during the Annual Awards Banquet, which is one of the prominent events of the Society’s Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition scheduled to take place in September 2024 in New Orleans. Sven Haberer (Baker Hughes), Program Chair, is the distinguished recipient of the 2024 Europe Regional Service Award for his strong commitment, leadership skills and resilience to SPE.
