Last year, California established itself as a climate leader by passing two bills that require public and private companies operating in the state to disclose their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the climate-related financial risks they face. The Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act, or SB 253, applies to companies that have annual revenue of at least $1 billion, and companies must disclose their Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions under this regulation. As noted in this The Wall Street Journal article, California’s SB 253 is slated to roll out as originally planned despite a call to slow the timeline due to concerns over the potential costs to businesses.
