𝗗𝗼 𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀? Micronutrient inadequacies vary not only by region but also by gender. According to a study by Passarelli et al. (Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health), females have a higher prevalence of inadequate intake than men of 𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗲, 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝟭𝟮, 𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻 and 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗶𝘂𝗺, with some regions also reporting higher inadequacies in 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗰𝗶𝘂𝗺, 𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗼𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻, 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 and 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗘. Meanwhile, males tend to have higher inadequacies of 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺, 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝟲, 𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗰, 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗖, 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗔, 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻 and 𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻 across different age groups and regions than women. These findings open the question: Do we need gender-specific products to meet individual nutritional needs? What do you think? 🤔

𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮! 🌍 Last week, our colleagues Hagen and Yusra visited Johannesburg and Cape Town, where we hosted our very first Innovation Days. We were grateful to have the excellent support of Liezel Huysamen from our sister company Stern Ingredients South Africa, along with our regional partner ORCHEM. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀? The event kicked off with insights from our Regional Technical Business Development Manager, Yusra, who led discussions on the current role and future of functional ingredients and fortified foods in Africa. She also explored key market drivers and consumer behaviour specific to this region. 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 Hagen, our market specialist, provided valuable insights into the African market, addressing the common misconception that fortification always involves higher costs. He provided practical examples to demonstrate how costs can be kept low, making fortification both affordable and accessible. In this way new customer segments can be targeted with products that can indulge health for everyone.  He also touched on another challenge – the complexity of production processes. Our premixes simplify this by enabling fortification in just one production step. Additionally, Hagen highlighted the growing trend of "Beauty from Within," explaining how micronutrients can contribute to healthier skin, hair and nails  for both men and women. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗲𝘀. We hope you enjoyed the event and had the chance to network and chat with us and other guests. Here’s looking forward to more events like this in the future! 🚀

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻? 🌍 Did you know that micronutrient inadequacies vary widely across the globe? A global estimation of the micronutrient intake worldwide has been conducted by Passarelli et al. (Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health) highlighting highly prevalent gaps across nutrients. There haven’t been many global estimates of inadequate micronutrient intakes so far, which is why this study is so interesting. 𝗜𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗲, 𝗩𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗘, 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗰𝗶𝘂𝗺, 𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻, 𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗼𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 have been found to be the most common micronutrient deficiencies worldwide. While micronutrient inadequacies are present in every region of the world, they vary widely between different regions. Addressing these inadequacies is crucial for overall health. As many people worldwide struggle to achieve an adequate intake of key micronutrients, it shows that public health methods such as food fortification should be tailored to regional needs. Slide through the pictures below to see the 3 highest micronutrient inadequacies in your region. 👇🏼 #MicronutrientsWork #Micronutrients #GlobalHealth #SternVitamin #Fortification #PublicHealth

#𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 | 𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 🔎 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗶𝘂𝗺 Selenium is an essential trace element that plays a crucial role in our body’s overall health. It’s mostly found in foods in amino acids that contain it. Selenium levels in food vary widely depending on soil content, which affects plant and animal absorption. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗪𝗛𝗬? Selenium is a key component of many proteins and enzymes in the body, helping to protect cells from oxidative damage, regulating cell growth, and ensuring proper thyroid function. 𝗪𝗛𝗢? People following vegetarian and vegan diets should pay particular attention to their selenium intake, as they tend to have a lower intake of this nutrient compared to those who consume meat or other animal-based foods. Since selenium levels in food vary significantly by region, achieving adequate daily intake can be particularly challenging. For instance, South Asia is a region where selenium intake is often inadequate. 𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘? While selenium levels in foods depend on soil content, good sources in Europe include sea fish, meat, sausage, eggs, and some plant-based options like nuts such as cashews and especially Brazil nuts . However, Brazil nuts have particularly high radioactive contamination compared to other foods, so you shouldn't eat more than two a day. 𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗠𝗨𝗖𝗛? The EFSA recommends a daily intake of 70 micrograms (µg) of selenium. For lactating women, an additional selenium intake of 15 µg/day is estimated to cover the amount of selenium secreted in breast milk, and an AI of 85 µg/day is set. #Micronutrientswork #Minerals #Selenium #Nutrition

🏃💧 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 Staying hydrated during exercise is crucial for peak performance and overall well-being. The type of drink you choose, 𝗵𝘆𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰, 𝗶𝘀𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰, 𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝘆𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰, can significantly impact your hydration and energy levels. So, what’s the most efficient hydration beverage? A meta-analysis found that 𝗵𝘆𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸𝘀 with a 𝗺𝗶𝘅 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 were most effective at boosting central hydration during exercise, more so than isotonic drinks, hypertonic drinks, or plain water. Here’s why: - 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 increase plasma volume retention and reduce urine production, assisting in 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆’𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗶𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘀. - Drinks with 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 (like glucose, fructose, and sucrose) are absorbed more efficiently, as they are transported across the gut wall by different mechanisms, enhancing both hydration and energy supply. 💧 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗲𝘀? Electrolytes are essential minerals that have electronic conduction potential in an aqueous solution, like our body fluids. 𝗦𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘂𝗺, 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺, 𝗰𝗵𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲, 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗰𝗶𝘂𝗺, 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺, 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 are the most important electrolytes for human health. They are vital for various bodily functions, including nerve and muscle functioning, maintaining a stable blood pH level, and ensuring proper hydration. Undissolved, they are present in form of mineral salts, like potassium chloride. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? Electrolytes, 𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘂𝗺, play a critical role in 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗶𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 within the body through a process called osmosis. Osmosis is the movement of water across a cell membrane from an area of lower particle concentration to one of higher concentration, helping to regulate hydration levels. When you sweat, you lose not just water but also essential electrolytes like sodium, potassium, chloride, and magnesium. 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹, especially during intense physical activity or in hot conditions, to 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and maintain 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵. By understanding the importance of these electrolytes and how they help maintain fluid balance, we can help you develop products that support hydration and address consumers’ needs. Next week we’ll dive deeper into the topic of electrolytes and hydration. 💪 #Micronutrients #Hydration #Electrolytes #Health #Fitness #Nutrition
