VISITOR CENTER OBERES BELVEDERE WIEN, AUSTRIA — The task of this competition was to design a subterranean vistor center in front of the museum of the castle Oberes Belvedere in the heart of Vienna. The concept idea was to create a walkable ceiling made of glass stones to bring light into the space. The central part consists of colored glass stones whose pattern is an abstraction of the large fresco that can be found in the central cuppola of the castle. Visitors can access the center via three staircases and two hidden elevators. The design is intended to help the entire castle complex become a good companion from the past to the future. Layers of time are made visible to allow visitors to engage intensively with the place and the simultaneity of epochs. This is being achieved by the fresco, the spiral staircase that is connecting the old and the new and the well-visible bunker connection from World War II. We´ve ranked among the best 17 out of 82 competiton entries.
