To optimize the #efficiency of disengaged wet clutches, the aim is to minimize the drag torque losses to a large extent, which can be done by tests or #cfd simulations. Depending on the operating conditions, a single-phase flow (oil) or two-phase flow (oil, air) can occur in the clearance. Transient multiphase simulations considering sharp phase interfaces are demanding but allow high-resolution calculations of heterogeneous phase distributions. The simulations show very good agreement with measurements of drag torque and high-speed recordings on an optically accessible test rig for wet clutch discs. Thermodynamic and frictional losses have a major influence on the fuel consumption of an internal combustion #engine. Especially during cold start and short distance the engine friction determines the fuel consumption. The piston assembly plays a major role in engine friction. Optimizing the piston assembly therefore offers great potential for savings in terms of fuel consumption and #CO2 emissions. With the #CFD model shown in the video, quantities such as ring #dynamics, blow-by, oil transport and oil distribution, contact forces between rings/liner and rings/grooves as well as friction including mixed friction can be calculated for a working cycle. In order to be able to calculate the ring dynamics and mixed #lubrication, the CFD model was extended via user define functions (UDF). Circumferential speeds of the shaft (rotor) of 100 m/s and more are possible. The tilting mobility of the segments prevents self-excited rotor vibrations.
