Konnichiwa Mr. Miyazaki! We would like to welcome Leo Miyazaki, a Master's student from Japan! Leo studies Materials Science and Engineering at the Shibaura Institute of Technology in Tokyo and is here at our institute at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg for a two-month research stay to conduct experiments for his master’s thesis. His work investigates innovative methods for steel slab descaling during continuous casting – a crucial process with the potential to enhance efficiency in steel production. So far, Leo has demonstrated pro-activity in the laboratories, exceptional dedication to learning the German language, and is quickly adapting to the way of life. Outside of his research, Leo enjoys traveling, listening to music, and drawing. We wish Leo success in his work and some nice experiences in Germany! #Japan #Germany #SIT #TUBAF #IEST #Collaboration #Research

Annual Excursion Recap: Institute of Iron and Steel Technology Last week, our team had the pleasure of exploring one of the Erzgebirge region's most historical sites. First, we visited the Kalkwerk Lengefeld Museum in Pockau-Lengefeld, a technical memorial/museum of the old binder industry in Europe. Here, we discovered the rich history of limestone mining dating back to the 16th century and got up close with historical equipment used to extract and process lime. Next, we enjoyed a visit to the Ernst F. Ullmann Distillery in Lauterbach. In a lively atmosphere, we learned about the production of Lauterbacher Spirituosen (herbal liqueur), with plenty of fascinating anecdotes from the distillery’s long history. Of course, we also had the opportunity to taste four of Lauterbach's finest spirits—each of us even took home an original Lauterbach schnapps glass as a special souvenir! #Team #IEST #Excursion #History #Limestone #Mining #Distillery #Lauterbacher #Schnapps
