As we navigate the complexities of a dynamic security environment, the importance of logistics, force protection, and engineering cannot be overstated. During a recent visit to Incirlik Air Base, Türkiye, Brig. Gen. Christopher Leonard, Director of Logistics, Engineering, and Force Protection for Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa, was welcomed by Col. Brandon McBrayer, 39th Air Base Wing commander. While the visit centered around meeting Airmen and observing day-to-day operations, it was also a testament to the essential role our logistics, force protection, and engineering teams play in underpinning the mission of our command. These core functions are the backbone of our ability to generate and deliver air superiority, ensuring that our forces remain ready, resilient, and responsive. By addressing the challenges and celebrating the successes of wings like the 39th ABW, General Leonard’s engagement underscores how critical these teams are in maintaining stability and strength across the region. This week, U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa Deputy Commander Lt. Gen. Jason Hinds welcomed Host Nation Advisors from across the command during the 2024 Host Nation Advisor’s Meeting. Host Nation Advisors are integral to the relationships fostered between the U.S. and the countries hosting our servicemembers overseas, as they identify potential problem areas, military constraints, environmental concerns and public discord over military-related incidents or activities, and propose appropriate actions for remedy. “This conference is an excellent opportunity to familiarize these key advisors with the Commander’s strategic objectives while also receiving first-hand information about the situation in the various countries hosting USAFE-AFAFRICA forces,” Hinds said.

"Russia’s war in Ukraine reaffirms that air superiority remains job number one. But we must be clear about our purpose. The air component does not simply pursue air superiority for its own sake. Air superiority is not just the first thing we work toward; it will typically remain our top priority — even if it becomes a low weight-of-effort later in the campaign — because it grants us freedom of maneuver to accomplish all other tasks and because attrition rates would otherwise become prohibitive. We have known this since the combined bomber offensive of World War II, and the current situation in Ukraine is a constant reminder of the terrible cost of a stalemate in the air." - General James B. Hecker, Commander of U.S. Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa and NATO Allied Air Command. With this perspective in mind, U.S. forces are participating in Ramstein Flag (RAFL), a sophisticated multi-domain tactical level live-fly exercise that includes realistic problem sets in a complex operational environment. RAFL offers a unique opportunity for the Alliance to exercise Counter Anti-Access/Area Denial (C-A2/AD) and Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) tactics, techniques and procedures.
