☀️Energy from the region, for the region – that was the idea behind a sustainability project at our office in Dubai. Solar panels over parking lots and on the roof of the building now supply the entire Technical Center with the electricity it needs – by harnessing the regenerative power of the sun. The roof and parking lot of our regional office were completely fitted with photovoltaic modules within around six months – more than 700 modules were installed in total. The construction took place on the company's own initiative and during ongoing operations. The solar panels generate around 500 MWh of electricity per year. This means that the office’s energy requirements can largely be covered independently and from renewable sources. Not only does the initiative generate and utilize green energy directly – it also reduces CO2 emissions as a result. A good step towards the Group-wide goal of reducing our absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 2020. By 2045, we want our operations to be completely climate neutral. #sustainability

PINK OCTOBER - EVERY VOICE MATTERS 🎀 October is the time to honor the brave souls who face #breastcancer and to remember those who we’ve lost. PINK October isn’t just about the color but the hope, resilience, and the fight for those affected by breast cancer. This time, at the WACKER Dubai Office’s, the local sustainability team, along with their medical partner, Lifecare International, took the initiative to organize a meaningful and informative event on why breast cancer awareness is crucial. The session blended personal experiences with actionable wellness advice. It was heartwarming to listen to a breast cancer survivor’s powerful journey and equally engaging to learn about the significant lifestyle changes that women should take. A, and a wellness coach guided the audience through the relevant steps in this respect. This month, we raise awareness, support survivors, and honor the fighters. Perhaps you can remind a friend or a loved one to self-exam or get a mammogram? Together, we make a difference, just as we had employee spouses, friends, and acquaintances come together for the event to share a word of their own or perhaps even listen to a previously untold story. #WackerMEA #BreastCancerAwareness #PinkOctober #SupportAndSurvive

Safety is the most important day-to-day challenge for us. What started out with the site fire department in Burghausen over 100 years ago is now a global safety management system for accident prevention in all workplaces. 🚒 Our Burghausen plant fire department started in 1917 with 30 men, a manual fire pump and a 15-meter ladder. #WACKERHistory #Sicherheit #Werkfeuerwehr #SafetyCulture #Safety #PlantFireDepartment

The demands on modern architectural coatings are high: paints and plasters need to meet a wide range of requirements regarding their handling, performance and environmental characteristics. For example, storage stability and easy formulation and application are crucial, as are properties such as wet-scrub resistance and hiding power. Last but not least, environmental and health aspects are becoming increasingly important. VAE polymers such as VINNAPAS® are an excellent solution when it comes to meeting all these requirements. 👉 What’s your impression? Do you see any other trends and requirements in paints and coatings in your market? 👈 #TeamWallSystem #coatings #vinnapas

We congratulate this year's winners David Baker, Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper on their Nobel Prize in #Chemistry . #NobelPrizeChemistry The Nobel Prize
BREAKING NEWS The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with one half to David Baker “for computational protein design” and the other half jointly to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper “for protein structure prediction.” The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2024 is about proteins, life’s ingenious chemical tools. David Baker has succeeded with the almost impossible feat of building entirely new kinds of proteins. Demis Hassabis and John Jumper have developed an AI model to solve a 50-year-old problem: predicting proteins’ complex structures. These discoveries hold enormous potential. The diversity of life testifies to proteins’ amazing capacity as chemical tools. They control and drive all the chemical reactions that together are the basis of life. Proteins also function as hormones, signal substances, antibodies and the building blocks of different tissues. Proteins generally consist of 20 different amino acids, which can be described as life’s building blocks. In 2003, David Baker succeeded in using these blocks to design a new protein that was unlike any other protein. Since then, his research group has produced one imaginative protein creation after another, including proteins that can be used as pharmaceuticals, vaccines, nanomaterials and tiny sensors. The second discovery concerns the prediction of protein structures. In proteins, amino acids are linked together in long strings that fold up to make a three-dimensional structure, which is decisive for the protein’s function. Since the 1970s, researchers had tried to predict protein structures from amino acid sequences, but this was notoriously difficult. However, four years ago, there was a stunning breakthrough. In 2020, Demis Hassabis and John Jumper presented an AI model called AlphaFold2. With its help, they have been able to predict the structure of virtually all the 200 million proteins that researchers have identified. Since their breakthrough, AlphaFold2 has been used by more than two million people from 190 countries. Among a myriad of scientific applications, researchers can now better understand antibiotic resistance and create images of enzymes that can decompose plastic. Life could not exist without proteins. That we can now predict protein structures and design our own proteins confers the greatest benefit to humankind. A colorful clothesline - better yet: a wishing line! - was strung up at the coffee bar in WACKER House this summer. Here, three trainees and apprentices were hard at work so as to grant the wishes of the children looked after by the Arche charity. "A lot of people stopped to look at us with interest right from when the wishing line was hung up," the three report. "Our wishing line was only up for two days before almost 50 wish cards were snapped up." The team then contacted the Arche and promptly organized additional cards with wishes. The three organizers handed over the fulfilled wishes to the Arche just in time for the start of the new school year. Exercise books, felt-tip pens, chalk for drawing outdoors, bow and arrows, or a nice perfume - anyone looking to do a good deed was able to make someone’s wish come true and bring some happiness into their life by simply taking one of the wish cards from the long line. On each card on the long line was a handwritten wish for the children of the Die ARCHE Kinderstiftung. The employees as well as some service providers and guests at WACKER House selected a card of their choice, fulfilled the wish and brought the gift to the collection point organized by Diana Schoen, Merve Kanar and Theo Böhm. #WeAreWACKER #charity #Arche
