Last week, our YND office in Warsaw was delighted to host a multi-day workshop with our long-term client, simple system GmbH, featuring their Managing Director, Sebastian Wiese, and accompanied by his technology team. Amid the prevalent remote work culture it was a blast to get everybody into one room again. The workshop was focusing firstly on finalising the transition to the modern Java marketplace solution that we built together. This move towards a more robust, maintainable system marks a significant step forward in our joint efforts. Detailed discussions on the remaining steps to migrate all traffic to this new platform highlighted our near-completion of this extensive project. Additionally, we delved into strategic planning for Simple Systems' future product development, aiming to align with the company’s objectives and KPIs. Beyond the workshop’s productive sessions, we also had the opportunity to explore Warsaw in the evenings... While these moments were a delightful part of our experience, photographs from our evening adventures are available only upon request ;) We’re grateful to Sebastian Wiese and the entire Simple Systems GmbH team for making the journey to Warsaw and we look forward to the road ahead, confident in our shared goals and the exciting milestones we're set to achieve together. Wow, what a roller coaster it's been with PWAs on iOS! From the beginning, Apple's approach to Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) seemed luke-warm, presenting a complex landscape for developers interested in leveraging web technologies on iOS. However, 1 year ago, the narrative took a hopeful (if surprising) turn, thanks to a significant update from Apple, which marked a notable shift towards improved support for PWAs. This change came with the introduction of Web Push for web apps on iOS and iPadOS, as detailed on WebKit's official blog here: https://lnkd.in/gDGKHydh. Back then, this update was considered by many as a clear signal from Apple, highlighting their newly found commitment to enhancing the capabilities and integration of PWAs within their ecosystem. But in quite the surprising twist, the recent developments around iOS 17.4 have led to a 180-degree turn in this matter. Aimed at aligning with the EU's Digital Markets Act, Apple is suddenly pulling support for PWA special treatment on iOS completely. (For the official statement and reasoning go to https://lnkd.in/dpqQWH7x and then to the Question “Why don’t users in the EU have access to Home Screen Web Apps”) Summarizing, the reasoning is along the lines of it being too much work to establish this support in an equal manner to all iOS browser engines. So now instead of preferring Apple's own Safari via PWA support, it's going to be no PWA for anybody. While most of our customers have stayed clear from relying on PWA technology in the past, in light of these news, some renewed questions are coming up if this will lead to a tougher stance from Apple regarding cross-platform application development technologies targeting iOS. Most notably React Native and Flutter. While of course it's impossible to read Apple's mind on this matter, we do not believe that the risk of Apple preventing those has increased. Actually, if anything, we believe it's now even less likely given the increased scrutiny that Apple is facing from EU regulators. We think Apple trying to block alternative development technologies like React Native and Flutter could be interpreted as an anti-competitive move unfairly giving preference to Apple-blessed technologies like Objective-C / Swift. At any rate, we are quite interested to learn where the PWA journey will end up. Maybe Apple will surprise us again and actually come back with a cross-vendor PWA implementation?
