BIPV | Building Integrated Photovoltaics | Aiming high!   As part of this ambitious pilot project, fire protection regulations for high PV facades were redefined in Switzerland in 2023 (link to the planning guide https://lnkd.in/e6r7qH2h).   Building on this, we were able to realize this wonderful project together with FAMBAU Genossenschaft and Swiss Fassaden Technik AG. During the renovation of two high-rise buildings, each with 24 floors, our SKALA solar modules were integrated directly into the building envelope during the construction planning phase.   In the video you can see the first completed solar facade, which at 54 m is now our TALLEST CONTINUOUS SOLAR FACADE WORLDWIDE.   Do you also want to reach for the heights without sacrificing environmentally friendly power generation? The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) is a generational opportunity to improve crumbling infrastructure with resilient and sustainable investment. Hot-dip galvanized steel is uniquely situated to provide longevity to ensure this generational investment will be enjoyed for generations to come. To that end, the American Galvanizers Association (AGA) has created an infrastructure focused website to showcase existing projects in markets supported by the BIL and by geographical location. What if parking lots were required to have solar panels? 🌎 France has introduced a groundbreaking law requiring large parking lots to integrate solar canopies, setting a new standard in renewable energy deployment. Parking lots exceeding 16,000 square feet must cover at least half of their surface with solar panels by 2025, a move expected to generate up to 11.25 gigawatts of capacity. This capacity rivals the output of 10 nuclear power plants, showcasing the transformative potential of this initiative. This approach addresses a common challenge in renewable energy expansion—land availability. By leveraging existing parking lot infrastructure, the initiative avoids competition with agricultural or natural land, preserving biodiversity while efficiently generating energy. Solar canopies also provide added utility by offering shade and protection for parked vehicles. The energy produced from these solar installations is expected to directly support businesses and surrounding communities. Additionally, integrating electric vehicle charging stations into these parking lots enhances the efficiency of energy use, minimizing transmission losses and supporting the transition to sustainable transportation systems. This mandate is part of France’s broader legislative effort to meet renewable energy targets and address growing electricity demands driven by electrification in sectors like transportation and heating. Despite France’s reliance on nuclear power, this initiative demonstrates the importance of diversifying energy sources to ensure resilience and sustainability. France’s solar parking lot law exemplifies how existing infrastructure can be reimagined to meet modern energy challenges. 🚢 How the Panama Canal Works The Panama Canal's lock system is an engineering marvel that raises and lowers ships, enabling passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Here's how it works: 1️⃣ Enter the Locks: Tugboats guide the ship into the first lock. 2️⃣ Fill the Lock: The downstream gate closes, and water is pumped in to fill the lock. 3️⃣ Raise the Ship: As the water level rises, the ship floats upward. 4️⃣ Open the Gate: Once the water level matches the next lock, the gate opens, and the ship moves forward. 5️⃣ Repeat: This process continues until the ship completes its journey through the Isthmus.  A seamless blend of engineering and nature! Last week missing pieces of the Fit-for-55 puzzle made remarkable progress. Among those: the adoption of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) by the Council of the European Union. As the European Parliament already voted positively on the consensus achieved together with the European Commission in the trilogue negotiations, the next step will be the publication in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU).   Among others the new EPBD requires (more: https://lnkd.in/eBsY6vvi):   👉 By 2030 all new buildings should be zero-emission buildings, and by 2050 the EU’s building stock should be transformed into zero-emission building stock. 👉 For non-residential buildings, the revised directive introduces minimum energy performance standards ensuring that such buildings do not exceed the specified maximum amount of primary or final energy that they can use per m2 annually. 👉 Member states will make sure that the average primary energy use of residential buildings will be reduced by 16% in 2030 and by 20-22% in 2035. 👉 At least 55% of the energy reduction will be achieved through renovation of the 43% worst performing residential buildings. 👉 Member states will put in place technical assistance and financial support measures, with a focus on vulnerable households.   EAE welcomes the decision and thanks all involved in the European Parliament, the Council and the European Commission making this happen!   Now that the new legislative framework is in place, implementation at national level is key. Member states will have two years in which to incorporate the provisions of the directive into their national legislation. The European ETICS sector stands ready to play its role improving the energy efficiency of buildings envelopes and reducing the energy consumption of the building stock, which will lever numerous benefits - for the environment, the economy and the people: https://lnkd.in/eHEf4UXv.
