BASF Aroma Ingredients

End of July, an explosion followed by a fire happened at one of our plants in Ludwigshafen. It was a shock to all of us, and we are very relieved that nobody was seriously injured. It is our and my utmost priority that everyone is safe and that operations also run without incident. Detailed investigation by experts is ongoing and at the same time the cleaning, inspection and repair have started. I’m very thankful to and proud of all our teams that work so diligently and professionally on handling this incident. Subsequently on 7 August, we had to declare Force Majeure for certain aroma ingredients, as well as vitamin A, vitamin E, and carotenoid products. Our customers have been informed on how this affects them on the concerned products. I understand how challenging and frustrating this is for our customers. Since then, we have been in close communication with our customers and partners, to provide as much transparency and support as we can in this challenging situation. We are thankful for the support and patience from our customers and partners, and I believe by working together, we will achieve the best outcomes. We are very proud that the newest results of our cooperation with Benjamin List’s research group at the Max Planck Institute on developing a new production process for #Ambroxide was published in “Nature”, one of the world’s leading scientific journals. Ambroxide is a valuable #fragrance ingredient that was originally identified in ambergris lumps produced by sperm whales. Since the 1950s several chemical and biotechnological routes to produce this complex molecule have been industrialized. Benjamin List received the Nobel Prize in 2021 for developing powerful synthetic catalysts for producing complex molecules from simple precursors. Now his team and BASF Aroma Ingredients joined forces in applying this technology to Ambroxide production. After declaring Force Majeure on deliveries of selected aroma ingredients including DL-Menthol yesterday, we have received inquiries regarding an impact on supply of L-menthol. To clarify, there is no Force Majeure declared on L-menthol, the L-menthol plant is not impacted by the incident in Ludwigshafen and continues to run as normal. As a result of a fire that occurred in a BASF plant in Ludwigshafen, Germany on July 29, 2024, BASF SE - also on behalf of its affected affiliates - declares Force Majeure on deliveries of selected vitamin A, vitamin E, and carotenoid products as well as selected aroma ingredients, with immediate effect and until further notice. Last week, on July 29, 2024, around 12 PM CEST, an explosion followed by a fire occurred due to the leak of an organic solvent in a BASF plant in the southern part of our site in Ludwigshafen.  We were relieved that all injured employees could leave the BASF Medical Center the same day, on the evening of July 29.
