🌞 30 years of research and innovation: our #Solar #Furnace celebrates its anniversary 🎉 The large-scale research facility of the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V. in Cologne-Porz, which houses the High-Flux Solar Furnace and Solar Simulator, has turned 30 years old. Since its commissioning in 1994, the facility has enabled a large number of #experiments and research #projects and has established itself as a valuable resource for the research and application of concentrated sunlight. It offers researchers the opportunity to utilise sunlight in extraordinary ways: for the production of #hydrogen, for research into new #materials or for testing #space components. We look forward to many more exciting projects! 🚀🔬 Read the full article and find out more about the anniversary, the facility and our research projects: 👇 https://lnkd.in/gXmyqNRz #30years #SolarResearch #FutureFuels #GreenHydrogen #SynFuels #SolarEnergy #Innovation

After attending our conference last week, global hydrogen expert Prof. Christian Sattler, Director of HILT Partner German Aerospace Center (DLR)'s Institute of Future Fuels and Vice President of Hydrogen Europe Research, was interviewed on ABC 891 this morning from the HiTeMP Forum. Prof. Sattler's interview touched on Australia’s green hydrogen production and export opportunities, including collaboration with Germany, and emphasised South Australia's crucial role in this growing global market. He also highlighted the pivotal role green hydrogen has to play in decarbonising heavy industries, such as green iron and steel. 🎧 Listen at https://lnkd.in/gJxmxY3s, from 20:12 to 29:00. #Hydrogen #GreenHydrogen #Decarbonisation #NetZero

🔎 #Insights into research: Today we would like to present the EU project #FlowPhotoChem, which has researched the sustainable production of basic chemicals from water and carbon dioxide using concentrated #solar radiation and has generated important results following the final experimental phase. ☀️🌳💧 The project has succeeded in developing a modular, sunlight-operated system for the production of sustainable chemicals and operating it in practice in the High-Flux Solar Simulator at the #DLR site in Cologne-Porz. The focus was on the solar production of #ethylene, an important base material for the chemical industry, which is used for the production of the plastic polyethylene, among other things. In addition, relevant quantities of other valuable products such as acetate, ethanol and propanol are produced. In the final one-week experimental phase, the researchers were able to successfully demonstrate the solar production of the target product ethylene as well as other hydrocarbons and energy carriers, thereby achieving an important milestone in the FlowPhotoChem project. The practical experience gained also enabled the Institute of Future Fuels to further expand its expertise in the operation of complex experimental setups with comprehensive measurement and control technology. The knowledge gained represents an important basis for the further development of this modular approach to the #sustainable and climate-neutral production of chemicals and energy carriers. Further information and the final project #film, which was produced as part of the experiments, can be found in our project description and on the project website: 👇 https://lnkd.in/e3CKjmVS https://lnkd.in/ebNJdCN Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V., University of Galway, Instituto de Tecnología Química (UPV-CSIC), ICIQ, EPFL, University of Szeged, Johnson Matthey, MEMBRASENZ, Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, Leitat Technological Center, Eindhoven University of Technology, Universiteit van Amsterdam, SoHHytec, eChemicles, Kyambogo University. #GreenEthylene #EnergyResearch #SolarResearch #Innovation #CleanEnergy #Energiewende #FutureFuels

It was a pleasure to welcome a delegation from Spain and Portugal to Jülich, who were on tour in NRW together with our colleagues from the Federal Foreign Office and NRW.Energy4Climate. Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V. has a long-standing & trusting cooperation with both countries🤝That’s why a visit to our DLR Institut für Solarforschung and DLR Institut für Future Fuels in Jülich was a must☀️ 🇪🇸We have been working closely with our Spanish colleagues at Plataforma Solar de Almería - CIEMAT for many years and DLR has it owns site in Almería. The location of the Plataforma Solar is highly valuable as it is the largest center in Europe dedicated to researching, developing and testing concentrating solar technologies. 🇵🇹Together with our Portuguese partners of the University of Évora, DLR jointly manages a research infrastructure to test molten salt technologies close to the city of Évora. The EMSP makes it possible to investigate and validate a wide range of innovations in a relevant environment💡We look forward to many more years of collaboration! 🏅 Our colleague Dr. clarisse lorreyte has been honoured by the DLR Woman+ in Science & Technology network as 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 for October. She joined the Institute of Future Fuels of DLR in Cologne in May 2021 to further work on biomass valorization, integrated with #solar energy. Since then, she has been involved in innovative projects coupling biomass conversion using concentrated solar power, notably through two European projects such as #PYSOLO and #Sunfusion. She has also trained in new areas like #decarbonization, including #CO₂ capture, as in the #CALyPSOL project. In 2023, her research group’s paper "Experimental Study of a Lab-Scale Carbonator for CO₂ Capture Purposes" received the "Outstanding Paper Award" at the ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers) conference. We warmly congratulate on this award! In February 2022, the DLR Women+ in Science & Technology network was founded on the initiative of two female scientists at Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V. The aim of the network is to increase the proportion of women and gender minorities (Women+) at DLR, to make Women+ experts visible, to promote scientific conferences and, as the voice of DLR's Women+ scientists, to set the levers at DLR in such a way that DLR is perceived as an attractive employer, especially for women and gender minorities. Today, more than 500 employees have already joined the network. #Jobs #EnergyResearch #SolarEnergy #SolarFuels #Energiewende
