🏖️ Our beaches are getting cleaner and cleaner. The amount of marine macro litter in the EU coastline has dropped by 29% between 2015-2016 and 2020-2021, according to our latest report. Single-use plastic went down by 40%, while fisheries-related items and plastic bags decreased by 20%. Marine litter has negative effects on the health of our ocean and marine life, and may also threat human health and welfare. While this news is encouraging, more needs to be done, as the median amount of marine macro litter at sea is still high in many European regions. Our report on macro litter trends helps EU countries set national targets. It also supports tracking progress towards the EU Zero Pollution Action Plan, which aims to reduce plastic litter at sea by 50% by 2030. Today is #WorldCancerDay. Prevention, early detection, and equal access to quality medical care are particularly important when dealing with cancer. This is where our European quality assurance scheme for breast cancer services, now available, can be a valuable support. It sets quality requirements for breast cancer care, covering screening, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. Breast cancer services, including screening units, hospitals, cancer centres and clinics, can refer to the scheme to monitor and improve the quality of their services. If adopted across Europe, this scheme can help overcome inequalities in accessing quality care across Europe, as well as facilitating patient movement within and between health systems. 32% of primary and nearly 50% of African secondary schools lack electricity. This impacts education and growth. However, our research shows that installing decentralised solar photovoltaic systems could help. Solar power could improve education, boost the economy, and cut CO2 emissions. Researchers from the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, Kids Research Institute, UNICEF, Giga, International Monetary Fund, University of Sussex, and University of South Africa (UNISA) have mapped the electrical needs of 500,000 schools.
