  • 🌎 On 25 October, we come together to celebrate 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐁𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲 (WSBHD), with this year's theme “𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐆𝐚𝐩𝐬 𝐓𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫”. The focus is on ensuring that the rights of people with spina bifida and hydrocephalus (SBH) are respected and their contributions are recognised in all areas of life. 💡 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐛𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐚 is a congenital condition that arises during early pregnancy as a result of complications involving the neural tube and spine. It can be prevented by folic acid supplementation during pregnancy. 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐬 results from an imbalance in the production and absorption of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), leading to increased pressure on the brain. Both conditions require lifelong support and accessible care. However, individuals with SBH continue to face significant challenges, including stigma, discrimination, and barriers to accessible healthcare. It is essential that we 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐠𝐚𝐩𝐬 by improving healthcare systems, prevention efforts, and inclusive environments to ensure that people with SBH can fully participate in society and fulfil their potential. Join us in advocating for the SBH community and raising awareness around these critical issues. Together, we can work towards integrated care and a society where everyone has equal opportunities. 🤝 ➡️ Visit International Federation for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus to learn more about #WSBHD24 and to get involved! #BridgingGapsTogether #InclusionMatters

Each year, nearly 400,000 newborns globally are affected by GBS, often transmitted during childbirth. 🤰🏾 WHO's guidelines offer two approaches: 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, in which all pregnant women are tested at around 35-37 weeks, and 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, targeting those with specific risk factors. Both strategies aim to administer antibiotics to mothers at the right time during labour, significantly reducing the risk of passing the infection to the baby. 🩺💊 👩🏽⚕️Healthcare professionals play a crucial role in 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 to protect newborns from preventable infections. • 🌎 𝟏𝟑 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲! 🌎 Preterm babies face unique challenges, and sepsis is one of the most serious. Their underdeveloped immune systems increase their susceptibility to infections, including the life-threatening condition of sepsis. Vigilance and comprehensive care are therefore essential for the health of our tiniest patients. 💡 Invasive medical interventions such as artificial respiratory support are vital for many preterm infants. At the same time, they can increase the risk of infection, including sepsis. It is important to be aware of the potential infection pathways and the complex interplay between life-saving interventions and infection risks. 🤝 We encourage all healthcare professionals to advocate for comprehensive care that addresses the unique challenges faced by preterm babies. Ongoing research and clinical vigilance are essential to ensure the best outcomes for these vulnerable patients. 💜 For more detailed information on the management of neonatal sepsis, refer to the European Standards of Care for Newborn Health (ESCNH): https://lnkd.in/eyR-35gq To find out more about #WorldSepsisDay, visit Global Sepsis Alliance. #WSD2024 #NeonatalSepsis #NeonatalHealth #RaiseAwareness

  • 📅 𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐀𝐒𝐃 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲! 💭 Did you know fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are among the leading preventable causes of birth defects and developmental disabilities? The global prevalence of FASD in children and adolescents is estimated to be 7.7 per 1000 in the general population. Research shows that the prevalence of FASD even exceeds 1% in 76 countries, highlighting the global impact. The European area leads the ranking for alcohol use during pregnancy with a prevalence of 25%. 𝐀𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐡𝐨𝐥 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧.☠️ When a pregnant woman consumes alcohol, it crosses the placenta, potentially disrupting fetal development. This exposure can lead to severe outcomes, including miscarriage, preterm birth, stillbirth, and FASD. The latter can present with neurodevelopmental impairment with or without facial dysmorphology, congenital anomalies, and poor growth – often with lifelong consequences. ❗ On this International FASD Awareness Day, we highlight that despite their 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬, FASD remain underdiagnosed and often overlooked. Many cases go undetected or are diagnosed too late, contributing to a lack of public awareness and necessary intervention. 📢 We encourage all healthcare professionals to empower pregnant women by providing them with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions for their baby’s health. 👶🏻💚 More information on how to establish and maintain a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy can be found on the EFCNI - European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants Website: https://lnkd.in/eMbh6Nrg #FASD #Awareness #Pregnancy #PublicHealth

  • Today, we celebrate World Sexual Health Day! 🌍 Established by the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS), World Sexual Health Day serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of sexual health and well-being for all. This year’s theme, “𝑃𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑅𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑝𝑠” (#WSHD2024), highlights that the cornerstone of any healthy relationship is consent – the basis for trust, mutual respect, and effective communication. At 𝐆𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄, we support this initiative and particularly highlight the critical role of consent in reproductive health. Empowering girls and women to make informed decisions about their bodies and reproductive choices is paramount. 🤝 Join us in raising awareness of everyone’s fundamental rights to sexual and #ReproductiveHealth. Together, we can advocate for a world where sexual health is recognised as a right, not a privilege. ❤️ #WorldSexualHealthDay #GLANCE #ReproductiveRights #WSHD2024 Image: Freepik

  • #KangarooMotherCare and #ZeroSeparation support breastfeeding in the NICU - and they can be life-saving interventions for preterm and low-birthweight infants. Watch EFCNI's video on the practice of #KMC in the NICU. ⬇

❓𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭? 🤱 One of the most effective ways to support breastfeeding is through early bonding and immediate, continuous and prolonged skin-to-skin contact. This practice offers numerous benefits, including: 💜 Initiates the lactation reflex in the mother 💜 Improves the development of the infant’s feeding ability, even in preterm infants 💜 Stimulates oxytocin secretion, which increases breast milk production 💜 Supports exclusive breastfeeding For these reasons, the World Health Organization (WHO) highlights #KangarooMotherCare (KMC), a neonatal care practice that includes skin-to-skin contact and #ZeroSeparation, as a life-saving intervention for preterm and low-birthweight babies. In the context of #WorldBreastfeedingWeek, it is important to emphasise the significance of immediate #KMC, as it has been demonstrated to enhance exclusive breastfeeding rates, particularly among preterm and low-birthweight infants. For further insight into KMC, please refer to our EFCNI Academy page: bit.ly/efcni-kmc. There, you can watch the full interview with our 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮-𝐃𝐚𝐤𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐨𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭 on the practice of #KMC at St. Joseph Krankenhaus Berlin-Tempelhof (please note this video is in German).
