AFRY has been awarded an assignment from Helen, a Finnish energy company, to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study for the potential development of large-scale #hydrogen production in Helsinki, #Finland. The study aims to determine the conditions under which #greenhydrogen production at the site in #Helsinki would be feasible. It will follow a top-down design approach, beginning with the overall project and plant goals and progressing to the detailed engineering and discipline-specific decisions necessary to achieve those goals. The study will use the latest data to provide up-to-date market insights, helping Helen to identify the most cost-effective design for low-cost hydrogen production. The large-scale hydrogen production facility aligns with Helen’s goal to provide its more than half a million clients with carbon-neutral district heating, cooling, and electricity by 2030. The study is expected to be completed by mid-2025, providing Helen with the detailed analysis required to move forward with investment decisions. Read the full story ⬇️

European Energy has officially inaugurated its first #greenhydrogen facility in Måde, near Esbjerg, #Denmark. The facility marks European Energy’s first venture into large-scale #hydrogen production using #renewable #energy. Construction of the facility was completed in June 2024, and following a successful commissioning phase, the facility is now operational with its first #electrolyser, supplied by the Danish company Stiesdal. Plans are already in place to expand the facility with two additional #electrolysers, with the next installation expected in 2025. Once all three electrolysers are operational, the plant will have a total capacity of 12 MW and an expected annual production of 1,500 metric tonnes of hydrogen. The green hydrogen produced at the Måde facility will be supplied to the Port Esbjerg and a world-leading company in industrial gases. Additionally, excess heat generated from the hydrogen production process will be utilised by DIN Forsyning, the local heating utility in Esbjerg municipality, further contributing to the #decarbonisation of the municipality. Verdagy has opened the first #electrolyzer manufacturing facility in the United States supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Located in Newark, California, the new Silicon Valley factory spans over 100,000 square feet and has the capacity to produce several gigawatts of electrolyzers. The factory, first announced in 2023, was awarded a $39.6-million grant from the DOE in March 2024 to accelerate high-volume production of Verdagy’s advanced #alkaline eDynamic® electrolyzers. Full-scale production is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2025. The company has partnered with ATI, a key supplier of U.S.-made metal alloys for its electrolyzers. Verdagy’s manufacturing process will begin with ATI’s metal coils and produce finished electrolyzer cells by vertically integrating subassemblies with minimal manual handling and processing. This streamlined approach, coined ‘Coils-to-Cells,’ was developed in partnership with ATI. The ‘Coils-to-Cells’ manufacturing system aligns with the DOE’s goal of supporting domestic electrolyzer manufacturing through a domestic supply of metals, thereby fostering a ripple effect on domestic production.
