Qubits Based on Semiconductors 💡 Forschungszentrum Jülich is not only working on superconducting qubits but also on #SemiconductorQubits. The advantage: The chips can be produced using established methods from the semiconductor industry, and the qubits are less susceptible to external disturbances. The team led by Prof. Hendrik Bluhm at the JARA Institute for Quantum Information is researching semiconductor qubits that could be particularly suited for future #scalability. Heute ging ein Quantenchip aus dem #europäischen #OpenSuperQ Projekt in die Geschichte ein! Das #HeinzNixdorfMuseumsForum hat im Januar seine neue Ausstellung zum Thema Quantencomputer eröffnet – und wir freuen uns, dass wir bei der Vorbereitung beraten und unterstützen durften. Besonders stolz sind wir darauf, dass auch Exponate aus dem #FzJülich dort zu sehen sind.   Bei seinem Vortrag im Rahmen des Heinz-Nixdorf-Kolloquium "Im Universum der Quanten" überreichte Tommaso Calarco einen Quantenchip aus dem #EUFlagship-Projekt #OpenSuperQ – ein Quantenprozessor mit zwei Transmon-Qubits und einstellbarer Kopplung. Dieser Chip, entwickelt von Jonas Bylander (Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg, SE) in Zusammenarbeit mit Prof. A. Walraff (ETH Zürich, CH), wurde zwischen 2018 und 2021 im OpenSuperQ-Projekt am Forschungszentrum Jülich eingesetzt. Die Experimente mit diesem Chip haben zur Optimierung der Qubit-Auslese beigetragen und zu einer wissenschaftlichen Veröffentlichung geführt. ⚛️ While we are already working on the 100 #qubit chip in #OpenSuperQPlus, a 2 qubit chip from the predecessor project #OpenSuperQ is ready for the museum ❗ As part of his talk on #Quantum Technologies in Europe between research and politics today at 4 pm at the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum, Prof. Tommaso Calarco will hand over the chip to the museum in Paderborn (Germany). The QPU will enrich the recently opened exhibition ‘Quantum Computers - Supercomputers of the Next Generation’. Happy to announce that the D-Wave #annealing #quantum computer remains at JSC after its purchase by Forschungszentrum Jülich. 🎉 We’ve successfully hosted and used the D-Wave system 🖥️⚛️ 🧑💻 for three years now and expect it to become increasingly important. The Jülich UNified Infrastructure for Quantum computing 🌐 (JUNIQ) at JSC gains complete access to all aspects of the system, allowing us to integrate it in new ways for new purposes, for instance, connecting it to the #JUPITER #exascale #supercomputer ⚡ in the future. The D-Wave annealing quantum computer is the 🚩 largest in the world and the 🚩 first in Europe - in combination with the first European exascale supercomputer JUPITER ⚡ we hope to achieve scientific breakthroughs in areas such as artificial intelligence 🤖 and quantum optimization applications.⚛️👌 Since the beginning of our collaboration with D-Wave, JUNIQ’s 👩🏻💻 scientific users 👨🏻💻 have successfully worked with the D-Wave system and achieved remarkable results, some of which have appeared in Physical Review Research, Nature Communications and only recently, Nature Physics. 🔭 A team of scientists from the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) at Forschungszentrum Jülich, together with colleagues from the University of Leeds and the Institute of Science and Technology Austria, has succeeded in gaining important insights into the false vacuum decay. This process is related to the formation of the universe and the behaviour of particles on the smallest scales.   All calculations were carried out with the D-Wave quantum annealer that is connected to a classical supercomputer at the JSC. Do you know QSolid? Within this project twenty-five German institutions from science and industry are working on a #QuantumComputer with enhanced error correction. The consortium is the largest of its kind in Germany. The #QSolid team aims to develop a comprehensive ecosystem that will be integrated into the #JUNIQ #supercomputing infrastructure at Forschungszentrum Jülich and made accessible to external users. The completion of the prototype in 2024 marks a significant milestone for the QSolid team.
