D&M Exclusive Pictures : Tokyo DisneySea Expansion Construction Site Update

Let's start the week with some exclusive pictures showing Tokyo DisneySea expansion site which were kindly sent to me by Daniel, faithful D&M reader. The pictures were shot from the TDR Monorail and show the expansion site, formerly TDR parking lot, where three new mini lands for Frozen, Peter Pan and Tangled as well as a new hotel will be built and open at Tokyo DisneySea in 2023, see artwork above and the previous D&M article HERE.

The first picture below shows the part of TDR parking lot which will NOT be used for the new lands but the picture is interesting as in the background you can see the back of the show building of the upcoming Beauty and the Beast attraction at Tokyo Disneyland. As usual, click on each picture to see them in big size.

The next picture shows the huge piece of land which was parking lot before and where works have started to build the three mini-lands. Note the bus passing by on the bottom? It's because for now they've apparently kept a road and on the other side of the road, at the bottom, there is another construction site.

The next photo shows the "big picture" with both the land for the new lands and the other piece of land at the bottom which i have the feeling might be the one where they will build some wings of the new hotel.

More pictures of the construction site. We're still at the beginning but in two years from now it will be interesting to take the TDR Monorail and discover the new lands slightly from above.

The right of the two pictures below shows the back of Tokyo DisneySea Lost River Delta and of the show building of teh Indiana Jones Adventure ride.

And that's it for today's TDR update pictures, for more details and all artworks about the new lands see the previous D&M article HERE. Another TDR pictorial update will come soon, so stay tuned on D&M!

Disneyland Resort Announces "Frozen Fun" at Disney California Adventure and Disneyland

All-right, Disneyland Resort did today its awaited announcement for the "Frozen Fun" which will  begin on December 20th, even if the “official” start date is January 7th, and it's at Disney California Adventure that DLR guests will find the following as part of “Frozen Fun”:

“For the First Time in Forever – A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration” – The Muppet*Vision 3D theater in Hollywood Land has been transformed for this event into the beautiful Crown Jewel Theatre from Arendelle. You’re invited to step inside and join the Arendelle Historians – along with special appearances by Anna, Elsa and Kristoff – for a fun and comedic retelling of the unique history of their kingdom, filled with delightful, sing-along moments from “Frozen.”

“Olaf’s Snow Fest” – Stage 17 in Hollywood Land plays host to an immersive winter wonderland straight out of the Kingdom of Arendelle, complete with a giant snow play area and musical performances by The Frolicking Fjords and The Tubadors. You can glide down a snow slide, build a snowman of your own and visit everyone’s favorite snowy pal, Olaf, and give him a warm hug. “Olaf’s Snow Fest” has so much to offer, from beautiful photo opportunities to scrumptious treats and special “Frozen” souvenirs. It’ll be a great spot for making memories that’ll warm your heart.

Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post – Head back outside, and nearby you’ll find Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post, where you can pick up the latest “Frozen”-inspired apparel, plush, toys, mugs and more.

“Anna and Elsa’s Royal Welcome” – Anna and Elsa, the beloved sisters from “Frozen,” move from Fantasyland to an elegant new location inside the Disney Animation attraction at Disney California Adventure park, where you can meet them as part of a special royal greeting. The colorful and varied display in the Animation Courtyard will also now include scenes and music from Disney’s Academy Award-winning blockbuster hit, “Frozen,” and at Animation Academy, a Disney artist asks, “Do You Want to Draw a Snowman?” It’s a unique opportunity to learn how to draw your very own sketch of Olaf or Marshmallow.

“Freeze the Night! A Family Dance Party” – Each evening, you’re invited to “chill out” in Hollywood Land with music, dancing, interactive fun and more in this new, family-friendly experience. You’ll arrive at the party through an icy archway to find wintry décor, dazzling lighting effects, cool photo spots, yummy treats and frosty beverages for all ages. Throughout the night, a giant thermometer registers the drop in temperature, as things get so cool they ultimately reach the freezing point when everyone lets it go in a spectacular “Frozen Fun” crescendo! UPDATE: A Marshmallow walk-around character will be appearing during this event.

A Frozen scene will also be added on December 20th to Storybook Land Canal Boats, featuring the fjord-side village of Arendelle, and including the castle where Anna and Elsa grew up, Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post, and Elsa’s mountaintop ice palace!

Bob Iger Wants a Disney's Frozen Musical Show

Bob Iger is very proud of Frozen and the tremendous success for Walt Disney Animation. So far Frozen has grossed $669M and it hasn't opened yet in China and Japan where for sure it will be too very successful. As Iger says in a Fortune interview "Frozen has restored our mojo", and certainly the one of WDA.

Now, we already know this rumor saying that a Frozen ride will replace Epcot Norway's pavilion attraction "Maelstrom" anytime soon, but now we learn that Disney also wants to create a Broadway musical with Frozen. With all the songs included in Frozen and its great script there is for sure a great musical to create out of Frozen and Bob Iger confirms in Fortune that Disney is in discussions to develop a show, though there is no set time frame. "We're not demanding speed" says Iger, "We're demanding excellence".

So, you might have to wait a bit before a Broadway Premiere but my feeling is that a show will come sooner or later. After all when you see decors like the one above showing the Ice Palace it sure will make a nice musical set, wouldn't it? The only question is: will the temperature of the theatre itself be "frozen"?  :-)

You can read the full Fortune article HERE.

Will a Frozen Ride Replace Epcot's Maelstrom in World Showcase Norway Pavilion ?

A source of Screamscape informed Lance that "WDI has been given the initial nod to do a little Blue Sky dreaming to determine just how they could transform the Maelstrom ride in the Norway Pavilion into a new Frozen themed attraction concept."

Right now - and of course "IF" the info is right - WDI is only in Blue Sky phase and no mention of the budget the ride could have or even if they will keep the Maelstrom flume ride system or if they will create another kind of ride, so take it only as a rumor. BUT there are some elements which push in favor of it, and here is why:

1) Frozen is a huge success and so far even the biggest one of Walt Disney Animation since The Lion King 20 years ago! And we know that in terms of "Disney synergy" they like to create a ride inspired from a popular movie success.

2) Epcot's World Showcase needs desperately a new attraction! ...as well as WDW to counter attack Universal Florida upcoming projects. Not to mention that the Maelstrom ride didn't aged terribly well, even if it's always fun.

3) A Frozen attraction will fit perfectly with the Norway pavilion theme and the Frozen characters meet and greet at Epcot had currently excellent reactions from the guests.

4) The architecture in the movie of the kingdom of Arendelle has some similarity with the one of the Norway pavilion ( and for good reasons ). Below, a picture from the animated movie and one of the Norway pavilion as well as the WDI rendering.

5) WDI Imagineers will use very probably the facility existing for the Maelstrom ride which means there won't be any cost to build a new building. That saves a pretty lot of money, believe me.

6) If Disney wants something opening quickly they could use the flume ride currently existing and change "only" all the sets. That said, even if WDI was choosing this option, it'll take time to create something new and to do it fine, so don't expect a Frozen ride before two years from now, if not more.

7) WDI has the technology to create in the ride amazing "ice" effects like the one we can see in the movie when Elsa transforms anything in "ice"

8) There are even scenes already existing that obviously could be transformed in a Frozen one. Like the one when the Drakkar boat is going backwards and when guests see the giant polar bear Audio-Animatronic...

Now, imagine that, keeping the same boat backwards movement, instead of the bear they put at its place an Audio-Animatronic of the snow monster below. I know, it's almost too obvious.

But, as Lance note in his Screamscape post that you can read HERE, if Disney gives to the Imagineers a big enough budget "the entire current ride structure could be demolished to make way for a new trackless ride system concept" and they could use the ice theme of Frozen to have a trackless ride "themed as a sleigh ride through the wilderness, scooting across the frozen landscape". Good idea indeed but this would certainly mean a bigger budget and we know that they have plenty of big projects awaiting the final green light, and even put on hold due to the higher than expected cost of My Magic +

That said, for all the reasons listed above and although it's so far only a rumor i think you can reasonably put some of your bets on this one. One thing is sure: a Frozen ride would be perfect for the Norway pavilion and World Showcase. And if this is only a rumor with nothing real behind it, well, the Imagineers should think about the idea anyway because it is a good one!

Edited: Just saw on the Moviefone website that Jim Hill also talked recently in a webcast about the Frozen ride coming to Epcot's Norway. And according to Jim an opening is expected in 18 months with also a Frozen ride envisioned for Disneyland later. one more good reasons to place your bets on a Frozen ride!

Animation Update: Frozen Teaser Trailer, Planes 2, and more...

The first teaser for Disney's Animation Studios "Frozen" has been released and i sincerely hope that the movie will be better than this 1.51 min. May be you'll be enthusiast but personally seeing a reindeer acting like a dog looks to me like a wrong good idea. Even worst, this teaser might give a wrong image of what the movie really is. Or may be it's me who's wrong...

Anyway, according to the synopsis Frozen tell the story of "Fearless optimist Anna who teams up with Kristoff in an epic journey, encountering Everest-like conditions, and a hilarious snowman named Olaf in a race to find Anna's sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom in eternal winter".

You'll see Olaf the snowman in the teaser below...

...as well as Sven the reindeer

...but not the human characters Anna and Hans, so you'll need to wait a bit more to know what will be the exact tone of this new animated movie which will be released this fall.

On this next one Hans is riding Sven the reindeer.

Always about animated movies Disney announced that Planes will have a sequel to be called "Planes 2 : Fire and Rescue" which will be released summer 2014, and in 3D. Considering the title "Fire and Rescue" no need to be a genius to guess that that this Planes sequel will talk about planes which are sent to extinguish forest fires.

Originally the two films were supposed to have a direct to video release and this might explain why this Planes 2 will be ready for next summer 2014.

Finally, Monsters Inc is released in three days and a ne - last? - clip has been released and this one is called "Star Player". Here it is.
