"Solo" Short Review

So, I just came back to watch "Solo" in theater and i quite liked it a lot. The good thing is that it was EXACTLY how i thought it would be. Not in terms of story because i didn't knew the story, but in terms of quality or "size" of the movie. It doesn't have a "galactic" size like a Star Wars movie, and it don't have either this kind of Shakespearian / Freudian dimension that we can find in the Star Wars trilogies. So, if you don't expect anything like this you shouldn't be disappointed.

Basically, "Solo" is a "heist" movie in a galaxy far far away. Alden Ehrenreich is very good in my opinion. He don't play Han Solo like Harrison Ford which would have been something impossible to do, and actually he look sometime closer to a young Jack Nicholson than a young Harrison Ford. If Jack Nicholson was a character he would be perfect to play him young ( without the craziness of Jack ). The rest of the cast - Donald Glover, Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton and Paul Bettany - yes, the same Paul Bettany who plays "Vision" in The Avengers movies - are all doing a great job, with may be a special mention to Donald Glover who plays a sympathetic - and from what i've read "pansexual " - Lando Calrissian. And yes, you'll have Storm Troopers, Tie Fighters and even a Star Destroyer but, again, don't expect epic battles like in Star Wars movies as it's not the place here.

Something else, though, surprised me, and it's the choice of photography: in 80% of the scenes, the actors are filmed at counterlight. You can see them, even if sometime it's "limit" or you see their silhouette, but it's a very odd choice of photography, specially for an American movie as usually, as a good friend of mine who is one of the best editor in France once told me, "Americans light everything" on a set.

At the end, this "Solo" movie - in which you'll also learn how Han met Chewbacca and why his name is "Solo" - should be a good surprise as i think most of you don't expect something awesome of it. And i think that Disney don't expect a huge hit either, that's probably the reason why they've been soft on the marketing and didn't spent a huge amount of money in publicity. The movie will certainly not make $1Billion at the box office but i wouldn't be surprised if it reach the $500M mark eventually as the "mouth to ear" reports are generally good and i even suspect Disney to bet on this to bring people in theaters who wouldn't have gone necessarily to watch it. And if you need another good reason to go watch "Solo", let's say that there is a famous Star Wars villain which appears in it - and i won't tell you which one! - which leaves a big open door at the end for a sequel to "Solo" if they wish to do one, and personally i'll be happy if there is one.

Harrison Ford Suffering Serious Ankle Injury After Being Hit on the Set of Star Wars 7 by the Fall of a Millennium Falcon Hydraulic Door

A really bad accident happened to Harrison Ford on the set of Star Wars 7 in England when he was hit by the fall of a hydraulic door of the Millennium Falcon. Harrison clutched his chest in pain as crew members rushed to free him from underneath the prop’s hydraulic door. He was then stretchered off set and flown to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, which specialises in fractures. A source added that he was in ‘a lot of pain’ and his foot appeared ‘damaged’.

According to an update from The Hollywood Reporter: "Harrison Ford sustained an ankle injury during filming today on the set of Star Wars: Episode VII. He was taken to a local hospital and is receiving care. Shooting will continue as planned while he recuperates," Disney Studios said in a statement to THR".

This seems to be a serious injury for Harrison and potentially could have a huge impact on the filming of Star Wars 7 if he can't be back on set for months or can't walk, etc... More about this on Disney by Mark website HERE

On the picture above, Ford is walking recently in a street of London with J.J Abrams and co-star Oscar Isaac.

Cowboys and Aliens Review

I finally saw Cowboys and Aliens last night. Not that i had high expectations about it but the theme always looked interesting to me and i was curious to see if this mix of two different themes was going to work or not. In fact, i enter the theatre with a not-so-good mental image of the film, thinking it was not going to be good, so i was surprised to see that it was better than i thought.

The three main actors are Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde. I'm not a big fan of Daniel Craig. I always though that he's good in action scenes but not in emotional scenes, and i still think it. In Cowboys and Aliens he's a kind of mix of Charles Bronson and Steve Mc Queen. Except that Mc queen had much more charisma and, to say the truth, was better than him. Anyway, i have to say that in this role Daniel Craig is not bad, but more "Bronson" than "Mc Queen".

Thanks God, there is Harrison Ford who, as it is often the case, is saving the movie with a role in which you don't expect him as he is playing a bad guy. Well, not a totally bad guy, let's say he's more like a tough guy who can be also bad if needed... Olivia Wilde have this almost extra-terrestrial beauty which, as you'll see if you go watch the movie, is perfect for her role. The story itself is not that bad as well as the SFX but, still, it will be hard to consider the movie as an "A" movie.

However there is one big mistake during at least a good half of the movie, which i really really hated. And it's obviously a choice from the director or the cinematographer. Most of the shots of Cowboys and Aliens are filmed using a telephoto lens, and yes, even the close shots. Master directors Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah did also filmed westerns using that kind of lens, but unfortunately Jon Favreau is not Leone or Peckinpah. With them it was not only a style choice, something interesting was "happening" in the frame when they did it, and it's not the case here. It wouldn't be a major problem if this lens choice didn't had an impact on the whole esthetic of the movie but unfortunately it has a negative impact on it, which means that the movie don't really have an esthetic appealing and i won't be surprised if this half-disappointment in the reviews was coming from that. When you look at an old John Ford movie, the story is great, the actors are wonderful and the movie, esthetically speaking, is gorgeous. Now, here, you don't have that. The story is okay, the actors are okay or very good in the case of Harrison but the movie is not esthetically pleasant and all this makes at the end a not-so-memorable movie although you can have a good time watching it. I have to add that i'm not a big fan too of the photography itself, but that's only my own taste...

Considering that you've probably already read plenty of not-so-good reviews of Cowboys and Aliens if you still want to see it, just go, and just like me you probably will think that it was "not as bad as you thought". But of course, this doesn't make of Cowboys and Aliens a real good movie.

Return of the Man with the Hat ?

Hey, what about getting some news of an Indiana Jones 5? I know, i know, the number 4 was disappointing but who knows, may be they will have a great idea - and a better script - for the no 5?

And that's precisely what Georges Lucas is supposed to have. According to Harrison Ford in his latest interview on MTV last week, "Georges have a crazy idea for the Indy 5". Ooops, a "crazy" idea fom Georges Lucas is not necessarily a good news!

Anyway, have a look at this short interview in which the man with the hat tells more about his wishes for the next Indy.

George Lucas talks about a future Indiana Jones 5 !

The Indiana Jones 4 will be released in four days, but Georges Lucas is already talking about an Indiana Jones 5 !

From the excellent TheRaider.net web site:

FOXNews.com caught up with George Lucas at Cannes who had a lot to say about the new Indy film and its future.
"I haven’t even told Steven or Harrison this," he said. "But I have an idea to make Shia [LaBeouf] the lead character next time and have Harrison [Ford] come back like Sean Connery did in the last movie. I can see it working out."

"And it’s not like Harrison is even old. I mean, he’s 65 and he did everything in this movie. The old chemistry is there, and it’s not like he’s an old man. He’s incredibly agile; he looks even better than he did 20 years ago, if you ask me."

MTV already went looking for reactions to this idea of Ford being reduced to a sidekick in the Indiana Jones 5, and returns with responses by stars Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf themselves.

"I have no cheeky answer for [that]. I just work here. I'm glad to work here," Ford told MTV News at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday (May 16). "Till they tell me otherwise, I will continue to be Indiana Jones."

More about it and the Shia LaBeouf reaction HERE

Last news from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull !

Less than three weeks now before the release of the highly awaited Indiana Jones and the crystal skull. And those of you living in the U.S who will go to see the Iron Man movie ( i saw it last night and it's excellent, by the way ) should have the pleasure to discover the new and probably final trailer.

A new TV trailer was released, it's short but there is some few new shots and you can watch it below.

Indiana Jones.com also released plenty of new photos and some like the one on the top give some infos. This one above shows a market scene and it's a Peruvian market - it's easy to recognize Peru with the typical clothes and hats. Which means of course that part of the action is set in Peru, and may be not in Mexico as we thought before...

Here are the other pictures showing Cate Blanchett and Shia LaBeouf who plays Indy's son.

The movie will have its world première May 18 at legendary Cannes film festival and is released in France on May 21, one day before the U.S!

Indiana Jones tribute part one - The making of Raiders of the lost ark

Indiana Jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull will be released in three months, and, even if we all would love to watch it right now, i'm afraid we have to wait.

So, in the meantime, i thought we could have a look back at the making of the previous Indiana Jones movies, beginning by the first one, Raiders of the lost ark.

Let's begin with some concept-art by Jim Steranko, wonderful comic book artist, and magician, too. And if Indiana Jones don't look like Harrison Ford on them, it's normal, as these production artwork was probably done before the final casting.
The first one above shows a scene which don't really exist in the final movie.

The one below shows the snake sequence, but if you look well, the temple is not an egyptian temple like in the movie.

This next one shows the famous battle between Indy and the pilot of the flying wing.

And this last rendering is about the truck chase scene.

Let's have a look now to some production shots. Here is Spielberg filming in Hawai's jungle.

This picture show the filming of the opening sequence, with the indians.

Here is Georges Lucas and the crew, always in Hawai.

This next picture shows one of the huge studio set.

Harrison Ford and Spielberg, probably talking about the opening sequence.

I mean, this sequence.

Spielberg and Karen Allen during the "streets of Cairo" filming. Note that this sequence was filmed in Morocco, and not in Cairo.

Here is the sea plane which appears in the movie.

Spielberg and Ford near the cargo ship.

The making of a mask for the final sequence of the opening of the ark of the covenant.

And here is another one, probably for the same sequence.

In the part two, coming soon, we will have a look at the making of Indiana Jones and the temple of doom!
