Disney and Oriental Land Plan Tokyo Disney Resort's Largest Expansion in 20 Years !

Although Disney or Oriental Land did NOT announce it officially - there is no press release on the Oriental Land website, i checked - the exciting news that Tokyo Disney Resort will add a third theme park, with works starting in 2023 or 2025 depending of the articles is all over the net.

Editing 12/1: Apparently it's won't be a new theme park but an expansion of the size of the park(s) by 30 percent to help deal with rising visitor numbers, including an influx of overseas tourists, according to Japanese business daily the Nikkei. The expanded area - which will be the largest expansion in 20 years - will include new attractions, and is set to open in 2023.

Here is the full original Kyodo News article about this new Disney park in Japan:

"Tokyo Disney parks operator is planning a 300 billion yen expansion:

Oriental Land Co., operator of Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, is planning to spend roughly 300 billion yen ($2.7 billion) to expand the two theme parks, sources with knowledge of the matter said Wednesday.

The company plans to start constructing the new areas - a 30 percent expansion of the existing parks - by 2025, one of the sources said.

To free up space, a parking lot adjacent to the parks within the sprawling Tokyo Disney Resort complex in Urayasu just outside of the capital will be turned multistory. The company is also looking to acquire additional land.

Oriental Land has entered negotiations on the new areas with Walt Disney Co., which licenses the rights to properties from Mickey Mouse to Star Wars, with the details to be ironed out by next May.

The investment, the company's largest since pouring 340 billion yen into the 2001 opening of DisneySea, is aimed at attracting older people and visitors from abroad to boost ticket sales that have stagnated amid Japan's falling birthrate and competition from rivals such as Osaka's Universal Studios Japan and other Disney parks in Shanghai and Hong Kong.

The expansion will also serve to ease overcrowding at the parks. The new areas may carry a Japanese theme to appeal to foreign tourists, a source said.

The company's consolidated sales have seen virtually no growth since fiscal 2013 and visitors to both parks combined in fiscal 2016 fell slightly from the previous year to 30 million."

To know what will be in this new park you'll have to wait, according to the reports, until mid 2018, but it won't be a surprise if it will include some of the new lands that TDR currency don't have room to build, like a Marvel, Star Wars or Avatar land, for instance. Let's wait and see what will be announced!

Tokyo Disney Resort Unveil Its Strategy Until 2023 !

Oriental Land Company - translate : Tokyo Disney Resort - released yesterday its annual report with plenty of good financial news as TDR welcomed 31.3 million visitors in the fiscal year ending March 31, a record attendance thanks to Tokyo Disneyland 30th anniversary. That means a 13.8% increase in attendance over the previous year and OLC also reported that per-guest spending rose on top of the attendance increase, with per-guest spending up 4.5% overall, led by an 8.4% increase in merchandise sales.

Now, there is more interesting news in this annual report as Oriental Land explain in details what will be their strategy, and this up to 2023! I did a selection of the most interesting pages and you can download the full annual report HERE.

This first page describes the medium-term plan.

The next one reveal they intend to "execute investment for new growth outside the Maihama area ( Maihama is where TDL and TDS are currently located ). No more details so may be it means a new theme park outside Tokyo's area, may be not.

The next page, though, brings a bit more infos as they explain that the "new business" outside the Maihama area is "a business that can bring dreams, moving experiences, happiness and contentment by offering unprecedented value and experiences".
Sounds to me like a perfect definition of a theme park, doesn't it?  :-)

This next page is about their strategy to a tract more guests in the theme park segment, and you'll note that they're looking to attract as many overseas guests as possible...

This next page is where they reveal their investment in the next ten years of 500 Billion Yen ( 4.88 Billion Dollars ) that i told you about in yesterday's article.

In this next page we learn they plan to "sequentially launch large scale investment projects" that will help to maximize the value of the theme parks.

Again, Oriental Land to "be prepared to welcome more guests from overseas". There must be a reason why they insist on this...

The next one is all about coming attractions and projects. Don't get too excited as they don't reveal anything else that we already know. May be also because their choice of rides up to 2023 is not done yet.

The next pages are about the 2016 medium-term plan is more about "sustainable growth of the core business"...

The next two pages are the last ones from the 2013 annual report.

Tokyo Disneyland Announces $4.8 Billion in Spending During the Next Ten Years !

Right when i thought that the announcement by Disney and Shendi of an additional investment of $800M for Shanghaî Disneyland to add more rides and shows on opening day would be the biggest news of the day ( see article below or HERE ) the Oriental Land company also announced - are you seated? - that they promise an additional
$4.8 Billion in spending during the next ten years!

With an addition of $800M Shanghaî Disneyland will add for sure many great attractions but i can't imagine what Tokyo Disney Resort will do with $4.8 Billion during the next decade! That makes $480 M per YEAR and although they didn't announced what will be created with this huge amount we can expect new wonders at Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea!

Oriental Land also announced recently that Tokyo Disney Resort welcomed 31.3 million visitors during the fiscal year ending March 31, a record attendance due in large part by TDR 30th anniversary. Also, Oriental Land revealed that they're looking at adding new investments outside the Maihama district where Tokyo Disney Resort is located. But they didn't released any specific details, including if they plan to open a new theme park outside Tokyo. But with $4.8 Billion they surely have enough money to build a new theme park wherever it will be...
