A Tron Reboot May Happen Finally, and Disney is in Talks with Jared Leto to Star in the Movie

Guess what? A Tron Reboot may happen finally, and Disney is in Talks with Jared Leto to Star in the movie. The news is coming from The Hollywood Reporter, so it's a reliable one:

"After canceling a third installment in the sci-fi franchise in 2015, Disney is exploring the idea of a movie that would act as a Leto vehicle.

Disney is planning to get back on the grid. The studio is in the very early stages of development for a new Tron movie, with Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto circling to star, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

No writer has been hired at this exploratory stage, and no filmmaker is involved. Justin Springer, who co-produced Tron: Legacy and executive produced the Tom Cruise sci-fi movie Oblivion, will produce. Leto and his producing partner, Emma Ludbrook, would also be involved in some producing capacity if the project moves forward.

Tron was a 1982 Disney movie set in the fantastic world inside a computer program, a cyberspace called the Grid. Starring Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner, the film wasn’t a hit at the time but was influential with its envelope-pushing special effects. It drew a cult following in the years after its release, due to its imaginative story.

In 2010, Disney revisited the world with Tron: Legacy, which starred Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde and brought back Bridges. Joseph Kosinski directed. The expensive movie made $400 million worldwide — good enough to warrant interest in a sequel.

But it’s been a series of shutdowns and restarts for a sequel, and just as it seemed it was heading toward preproduction, the studio pulled the plug for good in 2015.

But computer programs never die, it seems, they just get upgrades. Sources say this new project is not a direct sequel and is being built out of the source code of the deleted Tron 3 script. Leto would play a character named Ares, who has not appeared onscreen before, but was a key player in that script.

At this stage, it's too early to tell if Kosinski or actors from Tron: Legacy will return."

I remind you that last week TRON Legacy director Joseph Kozinski revealed details about the plot for the cancelled TRON : Ascension and may be the reboot would take elements from the script for Tron 3, but it will not be a continuation of what has come before in the franchise. Here is what Joseph Kozinski said about Tron 3 storyline:

"The movie was called, Tron: Ascension, I think that's out there. I think we got the script to about 80%. We were in good shape. We were probably eight or nine months out, which is still a good amount of distance from being ready to shoot it, but I think the script was in good shape. What I'm excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie from inside the machine coming out as opposed to one we've usually seen. So we hinted at that at the end of Legacy with Quorra coming out, but the idea for Ascension was a movie that was, the first act was in the real world, the second act was in the world of Tron, or multiple worlds of Tron, and the third act was totally in the real world. And I think that really opens up, blows open the concept of Tron in a way that would be thrilling to see on screen. But there's also a really interesting character study in Quorra and a "Stranger in a Strange Land," trying to figure out where she belongs having lived in the real world for a few years, and where does she fit in.”

The Reason Why You Can Probably Count on a Third TRON Movie

This week Disney released a new trailer for the TRON Uprising animated series to be released on Disney XD next month. As Blue Sky Disney said in his post HERE the trailer looks terrific, and you can check this by yourself below.

The good thing is that these animated series indicates that Disney is willing to go on with the TRON license. Sure, a good animated series can help to prepare the audience to a third TRON movie, specially considering that TRON Legacy box office in 2010 was good although less than what Disney had expected ( $400M worldwide including $175M in the U.S for a $170M production budget ) and reviews of TRON Legacy were so-so with 50% of "rotten tomatoes" on the Tomatometer. So, Disney could have decided to stop anything TRON but as we can see they didn't did it. And not only that, but chances are that we'll see a TRON 3 movie in a near future. Sure, if the animated series are popular this will help to launch the TRON 3 production, but there might be another reason for that, and this reason is: Shanghaî Disneyland.

Take a look at the rendering above - not perfectly sharp, i agree, but that's the best we can get so far. It's an excerpt of the new bird's eye view artwork that was presented at the National Committee of U.S - China relations last fall. On the left of the castle you have SDL Tomorrowland. As we know SDL Tomorrowland won't have Space Mountain. Instead WDI will introduce a TRON motor bike coaster as revealed by Screamscape some months ago. And if you look well at the big white building on the very left you'll see that its design looks like a stylized motorbike - what a surprise.

Now, what you must not forget is that chinese audiences are familiar with recent Disney productions but not really with the old classics - that's one of the reason why Hong Kong Disneyland doesn't have the classic DL dark rides like Snow White, Pinnochio or even Peter Pan's Flight. Instead HKDL have the Winnie the Pooh ride as ten years ago Winnie was the most known Disney character in China. Of course chinese know Pixar animated or Pirates of Caribbean movies and TRON Legacy, when released in China in 2010 even did $18M, a remarkable number as it was the third highest of all foreign countries.

Back to SDL: One thing we can be sure of is that Bob Iger wants that Shanghaî Disneyland will be a success from day one, and also that he had a special look on the attractions developed for the park, if not the "final cut". Now that the not-yet-officially-confirmed choice to build a TRON motorbike coaster has been done, Iger probably wants to make sure, too, that the TRON license is not forgotten in China. For us who know the world of TRON since 1982 and consider the original film as a cult movie, it's simple. A TRON ride, if well done, will be a dream come true for most of us and who wouldn't like to jump on a TRON motorbike and race in the amazing world of TRON? But for chinese who didn't discovered TRON 30 years ago but only in 2010, it's different. And, as the success of the Shanghaî Disneyland ride will also depends how much the TRON mythology will be known and popular in China, that's one of the reason why - in my opinion - these animated series will be followed by a third TRON movie anytime soon.

The Ultimate TRON Legacy Trailer !

You better don't miss this "private editing" of a TRON Lagacy trailer! Khameleon808 loves to do editing - as he says: "it's in my blood, my only wish is to do this professionally" - so he took all public available TRON Legacy trailers and resources, add a new music from The Glitch Mob, and completely created a new trailer which is way more better than the "official" TRON trailers.

He is so gifted that i really hope he'll be able in the future to make this for a living. I'll be Disney i will call him right now and hire him to do the editing of their future trailers. Talking about Disney, did the mouse liked it? Well, apparently they loved it as the video is now on the official TRON Facebook page!

Okay, it's time to have a look at it - don't miss it, it's brilliant, really!

ElecTRONica starts at Disney's California Adventure - First Videos!

Flynn Lives at the Hollywood Studio backlot at Disney's California Adventure. elecTRONica starts tonight but the awaited TRON event had a kind of premiere last night. Honor Hunter from Blue Sky Disney was there and you can read his report HERE. Honor was not alone of f course and among the hundred of special guests of this preview some had the good idea to film parts of the show.

Ezgoo who was also there last night and filmed the video below says: "I was able to get a sneak preview of the upcoming "elecTRONica" event and it does not disappoint. The world of Tron immerses you from the start. Flynns Arcade is fully functioning an waiting for your tokens. The Muppet Theater has been transformed to take you you into the game grid with never before seen footage from the film including live effects. elecTRONica is basically a dance party that will take place on Fri, Sat & Sun in the park."

Okay, so let's have a closer look to this TRON dance party inside DCA! The two first minutes with the dancers are not the most interesting but wait till the "portal" open.

Also part of the elecTRONica show the "Laser Man" impressed the audience last night. And what he's doing is indeed impressing, so don't miss this next video!

It's not the happening of the century but, still, it's cool...This is the kind of event they could do easily at DLP's Discoveryland, specially in the area of the Videopolis Theatre. Are they going to do anything themed on TRON at DLP? Hmmm, sadly, i would not bet on that.

Many thanks to Ezgoo and others for the Youtube videos!

" TRON " Monorail debut on Epcot Line

Since yesterday Epcot guests can see a bit of the TRON universe zipping high above their heads as renderings of yellow and blue light cycles have transformed one WDW monorail. A blue light cycle zips to the left along one side of Walt Disney World's "highway in the sky" and the yellow light cycle zooms to the right. This specially customized "TRON" monorail takes guests between Epcot and Walt Disney World's Transportation Center.

As always it's Inside the Magic who did the best video showing not only the train moving around Epcot but also inside the Transportation Center when the train stopped inside the station.

This next short video shoot by BravaCentauri shows the TRON Monorail moving inside Epcot at sunset.

Is it a good idea or a bad idea to have WDW monorails customized - and, in this case advertizing a movie? Let's say that the theming with this TRON visuals is okay, specially for the Epcot line. But let's hope it's not the beginning of a series, WDW monorails are not billboards and should be used for advertizing only exceptionally.

Will a TRON Bikes Attraction come to Disneyland ? - With great TRON Legacy Wallpaper Pictures

TRON Legacy will be released next December and everybody awaits its release with excitement. Considering that we had to wait 28 years to have a sequel to the original picture the excitement is quite logical but on Disney fans forums the big question is: "When WDI will build a TRON attraction?" Even more: "Why not have a TRON bikes ride on Disneyland - or WDW Magic Kingdom - People Mover track?"

On a certain point of view the question makes sense: this kind of ride would need a long track and the People Mover have it. But as we will see, it's technically a bit more complicated. Before i go further please note that all TRON pictures in this article are "wallpaper" pictures - except these recently released pictures showing WDW monorails featuring TRON Legacy art. Click on them if you want to get them in big size for your desktop.

To comeback to a TRON bikes attraction what you don't know is that a "bike race" ride was envisioned by WDI Imagineers ten years ago, and although it didn't had a TRON theme it looked exactly like the TRON ride that fans can dream about... The ride was called "Rocket Bikes", was part of the Sci-Fi City project for a newly designed Tokyo Disneyland's Tomorrowland - and probably the best Tomorrowland concept ever.

Designed by Imagineer Eddie Sotto this great Rocket Bikes ride had two "intergalactic" bikes with two people on each. Racers from all over the galaxy come to compete in the ultimate off-world race! The bikes were launched on a elevated platform front wheels off the ground for a race at high speed all around Sci Fi City, maneuvering through Cratertown, crashed space ships, Space Mountain and the "Cosmic Way" and in real competition with one another, all with onboard music themed to your ride. Think about a bike race where the People Mover is right now at WDW with two bikes side by side and you have a pretty good idea of how the Rocket Bikes ride would have been. Oh, and i've forgot to tell you that just like a real bike, your team leaning into the curves helped determine your place in the race. And also that the start of the race would have been "rocket launch" with flames coming out of the bikes booster engines!

The TDL Sci-Fi City Rocket Bikes would have been a great E Ticket ride...but it was never built. Why? Well, the Sci-Fi City concept was absolutely great but probably not that cheap. And as at the same time TDL was building Tokyo Disney Sea i supposed they've reached the point where they had to do a choice, financially speaking. And now that Universal choose to name "Sci-Fi City" one of Universal Singapore lands i'm afraid that TDL will never have a land called like this...

But let's come back to a TRON Bikes attraction. Could it be possible to re-design the Rocket Bikes concept for a TRON ride? Technically, it's probably possible...although the new design of the TRON bikes - with a hole at the center of the wheel - will be a brain teaser for WDI Imagineers. And not to mention that in the movie the driver literally lay down on the bike - which of course was not the case of the guests on the Rocket Bikes concept.

And could it be possible to put the ride on DL or WDW People Mover track? Well, the reality is that the rocket bikes were originally intended to be on the DL Peoplemover track!..BUT the banked turns and clearances did not work out, and it would have been the same at WDW. The fact is that you can't have vehicles at high speed racing on the People Mover track as it was not designed for that when WED Imagineers built it, back in the 1960's. It has been a problem with the Rocket Rods ride and it would be one with a Rocket Bikes ride. It's sad to say but it seems that the track can only accept vehicles at slow speed. Of course if WDI was destroying everything and build a new track it would be different but the price for this would be probably outrageous for Disney suits. The other challenge that made the ride difficult to build was the ride capacity per hour. Imagineers had to link trains of bikes together or do some fancy timing to get the numbers up...

This is why WDI Imagineers took the concept to Tokyo Disneyland where, unfortunately, the ride was not built. By the way, do you know that the Rocket Bikes concept was inspired by Knott's Berry Farm soap box racer ride? In that ride you compete with one another and it was a huge success at Knott's for that sole reason.

So, even if the Rocket Bikes concept would be perfect for a ride inspired by the TRON Bikes, i'm sorry to say that chances to have it build on DL or WDW People Mover track are so low that i wouldn't bet a dime on it. It's sad, but it's the reality.

Disney Store on line art collectible reveals key scene from TRON Legacy !

Some of you often asked me where i find all the great artworks you can see on Disney and more, and sometime it's pure luck. This Tron Legacy artwork is a good example: yesterday i went to the Disney Store on line web site, just to have a look at the new items, and, in the "collectibles section" listing, i saw a small image entitled "D23 Exclusive Limited-Edition "Attack on the MCP" TRON".

I thought it was some art collectible from the first TRON movie but a surprise awaits me at the item page where the full description says: "Travel to the heart of the game grid with our "Attack on the MCP" TRON Giclée. Here two relentless digital warriors confront the corrupt Master Control Program in electrifying pre-production art from the forthcoming sequel, TRON Legacy". I thought: no kidding, this is a TRON Legacy production art ? And obviously showing a key scene from this highly awaited movie? Incredible. Have a look at the full image below.

Interesting scene, isn't it?

So, that's how it goes sometime, i'm surfing on internet, not specially searching for artwork but it's the artwork which finds me!

And for those of you interested by this 13" H x 19" L collectible Tron Legacy Giclée here is the direct link to the Disney Store page where it's available for $94.95.

D23 EXPO Special Report by Andy Castro : The Walt Disney Studios Exhibit

The Walt Disney Studios had a great exhibit at the D23 Expo where guests could see props, sculptures and paintings that were used in the making of upcoming Disney movies. Thanks to Andy Castro's wonderful pics we will have today a closer look to them.

Let's begin by the items related to the Tim Burton's Alice in wonderland.

Next, the beautiful paintings for Robert Zemeckis "A Christmas Carol". By the way, i just learned today that the movie will have its world premiere on November 3 in London. regent Street, Oxford street and The "City" will be decorated with the colors of the movie. Jim Carrey, Colin Firth, Robin Wright Penn, Bob Hoskins and director Robert Zemeckis will be there for the celebration.

The world premiere will happen at Leicester Square, and for the first time in history, the three Leicester Square theatres will be part of the premiere, with 4000 seats reserved for this memorable event. tickets will be available for everybody so everyone will be able to be part of the premiere. Christmas carols singers ressed in 19th century costumes, snow falls, shows and giant screens will be all around Leicester Square. The premiere will be at the benefit of the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.

Here are pictures of three gorgeous painting - in the grand tradition of Peter Ellenshaw matte paintings. For each painting, you have below the "framed" version and the high-res "flat" picture.

My God, they had the genius idea to show Big Ben while it was in construction! I love this one...

Next pictures are about Jerry Bruckheimer's production, Prince of Persia.

This Chinese Dragon was used in the making of The Sorcerer Apprentice.

Animated movies also had their own exhibit, whether it is 2D animation with Princess and the Frog sculptures...

...or 3D animation with the highly awaited TRON Legacy. Note that all pictures below of the fantastic TRON lightcycle are in high-res.

This last picture will end this article, but Andy and I will be back soon for a last D23 Expo article, and if you love artwork this next one will be fantastic, so don't miss it!
