Fantastic Artwork of Walt Disney World Rides and Transportation Cars, Trains, and Boats !

Chris Buchholz is a fan of Disney and more and he did recently a project that i'm sure you gonna like. He drew most all of the cars, trains, and boats of Walt Disney World attractions and transportation and created a great artwork with all of them.

Chris thinks that some vehicles might be missing - if you see one missing thanks to let us know in the comments - so a new version will come soon. Personally i think he did a fantastic work, very neat, and i told him he should do a poster print of it when it will be completed. What do you think, would you be interested by order a poster when it will be released? If you are, send me an email at: lawrence55@wanadoo.fr and i will forward it to Chris!

It's Walt Disney World 42nd Anniversary !

Forty two years ago, on October 1st, 1971, Walt Disney world - Walt's big dream - was opening. LIFE photographers were there and the magazine did a special issue two weeks later, on October 15. You can read the whole article on Google Books and here is the LIFE memorable cover as well as the original picture from the photo shoot with 1500 WDW cast-members and characters!

WDW Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Update

Disney Parks released new pictures of Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and the first train is now on tracks at WDW Magic Kingdom New Fantasyland! The first picture below shows a WDI rendering...

...and the picture below show you - on a quite similar curve than on the rendering - the first train which today "ran under its own gravity and completed its first drop out of the station".

Earlier today "Imagineers and design and engineering" marked a milestone in the construction of the awaited ride.

I remind you that the queue decor will be highly themed with guests going through tunnels of the mine full of diamonds as you can see on the two renderings below, done by artist Chris Turner.

One lat thing: the artwork at the top looks a lot like the one officially released but it's not the same one, this one was done by Chris Smith, also for WDI, and it looks great.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Vehicle On Track

Some fresh news from the even Dwarfs Mine Train construction at WDW Magic Kingdom with, first, the picture above showing ride workers and Imagineers surrounding one of the train vehicle in what seems to be the future boarding room, and you'll note that part of the vehicle is under the platform. I'm not 100% sure of the reason why but may be this is due to the fact that the part of the vehicle where guests will seat will be able to move and they probably had to find a trick to avoid the upper part of the vehicle to topple when guests will board inside the train.

Also, the first pictures showing one of these mine vehicle on track "outside" have been posted by Mouse Steps and they also did the video below.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Construction Footage Video

Here is an interesting construction footage video showing what was going on inside the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train construction site not too long ago.

It appeared four months ago - i missed it and i just discovered it on Screamscape - and first i was surprised as Disney generally never release videos showing the construction of a ride - to "preserve the magic" , as they say - ...until i realized that the video was not released "officially". So, watch it, because you might never see this kind of video again, specially an official one.

New Disney Villains Sequence in WDW Celebrate the Magic Castle Show

The Disney Parks blog has posted pictures showing the new Disney Villains sequence in the WDW Celebrate the Magic show on WDW Magic Kingdom castle. According to Disney Parks: "This new segment of “Celebrate the Magic” places the Disney villains center stage. From the sea witch Ursula, lording over the poor unfortunate souls trapped in her underwater lair, to the demon Chernabog from Walt Disney’s “Fantasia,” spreading his wings across the face of Cinderella Castle, it promises to be a particularly dark and foreboding chapter".

"Things heat up as Maleficent casts a forest of thorns around the base of the castle, and then transforms into a wicked, fire-breathing dragon who threatens to destroy the very magic we’ve come to celebrate. Fear not, though. As with all great Disney stories, this one is sure to have a happy ending.

"The new Disney villains sequence makes its debut this Sunday night, September 1, during performances of “Celebrate the Magic,” and will be part of the show for a limited time, through November 1, 2013".

" In The Way, Guy " : When a Ruined WDW Shot Becomes Viral

Here is a true funny story for the week-end. It all started at Walt Disney World with a a man who intended to ask his girl friend if she will agree to marry him. A friend of the couple was there to take a picture to immortalize  the scene in the middle of Main Street U.S.A with Cinderella castle in the background. So far, just a cute declaration of love.

But something will happen that happened to each of us when we shoot pictures: a guy coming out of nowhere walk in the way right at the moment we shoot the picture... and ruin the shot inadvertently. It could have stayed like this, one more ruined picture, but it didn't. Later, the guy doing his marriage proposal posted on Reddit what should have been the picture of the most important moment in his life, and suddenly everything became viral.

370000 people saw the pic and someone had the idea to create a "meme" and to have the "in the way guy" being responsible of ruining all the important pictures in photo history! I have to say that the walking guy is just perfect as you can see that he suddenly realizes that he is in the  way and try to feel sorry at the same time - it's almost as we can hear him saying "ooops, deeply sorry, folks..."

So plenty of people began to create "meme" pictures including the guy in famous shots that we all know, like the one with the marines raising the U.S flag at Iwo Jima...

...or in the famous picture of the Yalta conference with Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin, at the end of WW II...

...or at the historical moment of Neil Armstrong shooting a picture of Buzz Aldrin on the Moon...

...or during the famous shot of a Mohammed Ali victory by knock-out...

...and even during the shooting of The Beatles Abbey Road LP cover photo...

...or early last century in this famous shot of workers building a skyscraper...

...but also in a movie scene like this one from Star Wars Episode 4...

...and even recently when William and Kate presented their baby to the world!

The one who is now known as the "in the way guy" is now "responsible" to have ruined every famous shot and even the Bat signal!

But, because they were at Walt Disney World the story had a happy ending for the couple as their friend did another try and finally succeeded to have the perfect shot of the wedding proposal!

WDW Magic Kingdom "A Pirate Adventure: Treasures of the Seven Seas" Scavenger Hunt Looks Really Cool

The new WDW Magic Kingdom interactive game "A Pirate Adventure: Treasures of the Seven Seas" opened recently and i have to say that it really looks pretty cool. One of the reason might come not only from the "Pirates" theme but also that it is located in Adventureland. I think that this kind of scavenger hunt fits better in Adventureland.

Of course the Pirates theme is just perfect for this but i have to say that WDI Imagineers did a really great job and all the special effects whether they are small ones or others more sophisticated are wonderfully done. Yes, it's just a scavenger hunt, but it's the one you could dream of when you were a kid, with a bit more of technology in it.

So let's have a look at it with some Youtube videos recently filmed and i also repost below the great concept-art, this time in high-def, so click on it to see it in big size.

The first video is from Walt Disney Imagineering with WDI Imagineers  Jonathan Ackley and Matt Beiler talking about this new interactive quest.

"In the game, the fate of piracy in the Caribbean rests in the hands of new pirate recruits, who, armed with magic talismans and treasure maps, embark on five different pirate raids throughout Adventureland to collect valuable treasures, while Captain Jack Sparrow’s magic compass guides them".

There is five different Pirates raids and the videos below shows four of them with, of course, what's happening and the different effects, so spoilers ahead.

Each guests receives a talisman - a RFID card - and a map and here is an example of one, click on it to explore in in big size. Picture from Touringplans.com.

There we go for the videos and the two first ones are from the always excellent Jeff Lange and show the "Heads You Lose" raid and then the "Blackbeard" raid.

The two next videos are from WDW News Today and show the "King's Ransom" raid and then the "Guardian's Curse" raid, and you better don't miss the cool final effect of this one.

I don't know what you think of all this but personally i really like it a lot. And i think that it would be very welcome if they would introduce something similar at Disneyland Paris Adventureland!

Monstrous Summer Coming to U.S Disney Parks

Tom Staggs announced it yesterday, a "Monstrous Summer" is coming to U.S Disney Parks. On the backlot of Disney Hollywood Studios guests will find the Monsters University Student Union, complete with a view of the campus...

...while at Disney California Adventure they'll find the monsters outside the University dorms recreated in Hollywood Land. This one specifically will be interesting to see as, as Mice Age told us recently, WDI Imagineers intend to transform in the next years the area of Hollywood Land behind the Monsters Inc ride in a "Monstropolis" - with the addition of the Monsters Inc "Doors" inverted coaster which was previously planned for DHS. So it'll be interesting to have a look at the decor they'll put in place this summer as it could give us an idea of how this part of the land might look in the future, may be a bit like the artwork below.

Mike and Sulley will also be part of the DCA Pixar Play parade ( artwork on top ) and new jokes have been added at WDW MK Monsters Inc Laugh Floor. And at Epcot a giant Mike Wazowski is now projected on Spaceship Earth.  Mike Roddy from Walt Disney Creative Entertainment tell you how they did it in this video...

...and here is how it look - stay to the end of the video, there is a surprise!

WDW Launches "Free the Goat" Marketing Campaign

WDW Marketing guys came with a new idea to promote the resort and actually this one is not bad at all and even pretty fun. In this case they ask you to "free" the Big Thunder Mountain goat and the first thing you need to do is to watch the video below AND to click on the link in it at the end.

Now, even if we all know WDW and don't really need a marketing campaign to go there, click on the link, as they did a series of cartoons with the BTM goat placed in a selection of attractions, and they are quite fun as the goat looks "perfectly" silly! After the video below - and above - you'll find a selection of my favorites, but there is many more so click on the video link and go "save the goat"!

Discover the Old Faithful Inn, the inspiration for WDW Wilderness Lodge

As i always say, i defy anybody who enter Walt Disney World Wilderness Lodge stunning lobby to don't stop and say: " Wow! ". And it's true that the gorgeous work on this spectacular lobby leaves everybody breathless.

But where the imagineers did found their inspiration for the Wilderness Lodge? This is what we will see today, but first, i want to say a big thanks to Eddie Sotto for his pictures and his exceptional contribution today at Disney and more. Eddie was the show producer of Disneyland Paris Main Street - simply the best Main Street ever built for a Magic Kingdom - and, among many other projects he worked on when he was a WDI imagineer, Eddie was also the creator of the Sci-Fi City project, a new and fantastic vision for Tokyo Disneyland's Tomorrowland.

Recently, Eddie went at Yellowstone Park, Wyoming, at the Old Faithful Inn. And, as we will see, it seems that this Old Faithful Inn was the source material in many ways for WDW's Wilderness Lodge. Note that the Yellowstone Park also inspired many years ago Disneyland now extinct attraction "Mine Train through Nature's Wonderland".

The pictures below - a mix of Eddie's photos of the Old Faithful Inn and official pictures of the Wilderness Lodge will show you how the Old Faithful Inn was inspirational for WDI Imagineers. But as usual, they didn't made a simple "copy" of the original. Although the Old Faithful Inn is beautiful, i think it's fair to say that the imagineers transcend it to give us an even more spectacular version of this 100 years old hotel.

A bit of history, first: The Old Faithful Inn, located in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, was built by architect Robert Reamer, an architect for the Great Northern Railway. The structure is the largest log hotel in the world - possibly even the largest log building in the world.

With its spectacular log and limb lobby and massive (500-ton, 85-foot) stone fireplace, the inn is a prime example of the "Golden Age" of rustic resort architecture, a style which is also known as National Park Service Rustic. It is also unique in that it is one of the few log hotels still standing in the United States.

Initial construction was carried out over the winter of 1903-1904, largely using locally-obtained materials including lodgepole pine (the bark was later removed in 1940) and rhyolite stone. When the Old Faithful Inn first opened in the spring of 1904, it boasted electric lights and steam heat.

The Inn has been expanded and modified several times. In 1913 the East Wing was added to the 120-room original structure, and in 1922 the dining room was enlarged. In 1927-1928 the West Wing was built, and the front of the main building extended.

The facility was closed for the duration of the Second World War and on August 17, 1959 the Old Faithful Inn was shaken by the Hebgen Lake earthquake which collapsed the dining room fireplace chimney and damaged the huge lobby fireplace. The Old Faithful Inn was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987.

The first pictures below show the Old Faithful Inn exterior...

...and the Wilderness Lodge building.

Here is some views of the Old Faithful Inn lobby, with its huge fireplace chimney...

And here is the lobby of the Wilderness Lodge, also with a huge chimney.

A close-up on the chimney of the Old Faithful Inn...

...and the one of the Wilderness Lodge.

Another view from another angle of the Old Faithful Inn...

...And one of the Wilderness lodge.

When we look at the ceiling, it's amazing how all these logs were assemble together one hundred years ago.

A view from almost the same angle, shoot at Christmas at the Wilderness Lodge.

One of the restaurants of the Old Faithful Inn...

...And the Whispering Canyon Cafe and the Artist Point Restaurant at the Wilderness Lodge.

But there is something else that the Old Faithful Inn and the Wilderness Lodge share together: geysers! the Old Faithful Inn got his name, precisely, from the "Old Faithful" geyser which erupt regularly nearby...

The Wilderness Lodge also have a geyser, but it's an "imagineering-made" geyser!

As you saw, it's quite obvious that the Old Faithful Inn was the inspiration for WDI imagineers when they've designed the Wilderness Lodge. But as i've said at the beginning, it's also true that Imagineering did with the Wilderness Lodge a new version of unbelievable grandeur. This last picture, a beautiful sunset shot of the Wilderness Lodge, is a perfect example of what i mean.
