Yesterday marked the 25th anniversary of the Danish Embassy in Berlin, and it's an occasion to reflect on the creation of this remarkable project. Visiting the Danish Embassy in Berlin today feels like stepping back in time, offering both a glimpse of the past and a glimpse of who we are today. Some things remain unchanged – such as the commitment to designing spaces where people can thrive, not just for those who work here, but for everyone who experiences the building. And the attention to detail. For those who have followed our work over the years, some of the design features may seem familiar and timeless. The project reflects our commitment to craftsmanship, from the careful selection of materials to the subtle play of light and shadow, allowing the finer details to become integral to the overall design. WHAT MAKES A GREAT BUILDING?   One answer could be a place that people prefer. That is the underlying principle of developer British Land’s assets, who in 2020 set out to create an exemplary new standard for the workplace. We asked the project leads—Juan David Ramirez and Jessica Barton of 3XN, Susan Carruth of GXN, and Matthew Secker of British Land—to explore 2 Finsbury Avenue’s unique design process, which is driven by strategic #sustainability, #circularity, and #behavioural science. 2 Finsbury Avenue in London demonstrates that #innovation at this scale is not only feasible but aspirational. “Every building we deliver today without a passport is an opportunity lost.” In our continued efforts to facilitate a circular economy and reduce construction waste, uncertainty of material provenance remains the foremost obstacle to wider reuse. Transformation projects in architecture must negotiate between resource conservation and cultural evolution. Culture is fast, buildings are slow. And when we build to respond to these rapid changes, we are literally moving mountains.   We have been working with transformation for many years, and see it as a dogma to design with what we already have.
