Particularly strong net flows in private banking resulted in a strong total net inflow for Nordea’s Asset & Wealth Management business, says the head of the division, Snorre Storset. “We had very strong net flows in private banking, EUR 3.6bn, which were the highest quarterly flow figures during my time as head of this business area at Nordea,” says Storset, who initially joined Nordea in 2011. Storset is leaving his role at Nordea at the end of the year as part of a staff reorganization at the company. “I’ve been here for three strategy periods, and now as we are entering a fourth one, I think it is a good time to leave the opportunity to someone else and look for new adventures for myself. There are many exciting opportunities around,” Storset says. #assetmanagement #nordic #assetmanager #institutionalinvestments #institutionalinvestment #institutionalinvestor #fundmanagement #fundmanager #wealthmanagement #wealthmanager

Kasper Elmgreen, CFA, has a somewhat simple recipe for creating successful investment teams: Mix a small, diverse group of talented people and disturb them as little as possible. This has been his procedure since leading Nordea’s Fundamental Equities team ten years ago, and it hasn’t changed much since he returned “home” to Nordea Asset Management a little more than a year ago as CIO of Fixed Income and Equities. In an interview with AMWatch, Elmgreen talks about returning home to NAM, creating optimal conditions for investment teams, and when to call an end to a longstanding strategy. “I think delivering alpha is part art and part science. It requires a high degree of specialization and an even greater focus, so I try to create a space for the investment teams so that they can do just that," he says. #assetmanagement #finance #investing #alpha #diversity

An overwhelming majority of Nordic insurers plan to increase allocations to private markets investments, a fresh survey by BlackRock has found. In an interview with AMWatch, Jon Valdelin, BlackRock's head of institutional client business for the Nordic Region, and Olivier Van Eyseren, Head of the Financial Institutions Group for EMEA, explain the survey's conclusions. “It came out that Nordic insurers had one of the highest proportions of insurers to increase risk appetite over the next two years. Within this year’s survey, you also have a very high proportion in the Nordic region – 85% – saying that they have a higher conviction to invest in the low carbon transition versus 12 months ago,” Valdelin says.

Several US states have blacklisted Nordic financial institutions for being too focused on environmental issues. This includes Nordea, which sees a business advantage in the fact that a growing number of international asset managers are talking less about sustainability. “I guess we’re a bit proud. We think it makes sense to invest based on ESG considerations. The risks we see in the market are real,” says Eric Christian Pedersen, Head of Responsible Investments at Nordea Asset Management. In total, 19 states in the US have formed an alliance to put pressure on asset managers like Nordea. Specifically, they have passed legislation that, to a certain extent, prohibits their public funds from investing in banks or asset managers, that consider environmental, social, and governance metrics, also known as ESG. “Sustainable investments are a competitive parameter for Nordea, and we cannot and will not hide that. So, we will never be considered by the anti-ESGs, whether we are mentioned by name or not,” says Pedersen. #assetmanagement #assetmanager #bankingindustry #financialmarkets #ESG #sustainableinvestments #sustainability #investments #Nordic

Finnish impact data company The Upright Project is exploring how it could include more in-depth information about the impact of defense sector companies, says CEO Annu Nieminen. "We have been thinking that we all need to break away from the so-called first wave of ESG – which was that it’s enough just to exclude weapons from the portfolio – and start to understand investment in defense sector companies from a much deeper perspective," Nieminen says. Nieminen founded The Upright Project in Helsinki seven years ago. Today, the company serves institutional investors whose total asset volume exceeds USD 2.7trn. #impactinvesting #esginvesting #assetmanagement #assetmanagers #institutionalinvestors #portfoliomanagement #portfoliomanager #responsibleinvesting #defense

A potential invasion of Taiwan by China is one of several scenarios for future geopolitical changes drafted by the portfolio managers of Finland’s Asilo Asset Management Oy. In an interview with AMWatch, Ernst Grönblom and Henri Blomster, who jointly manage thematic high-conviction fund Asilo Argo, talk about their contingency plans and thoughts on investing in the defense sector. The fund is part of the product range of United Bankers. Grönblom notes that discussion on ESG and defense sector companies has seen radical change since Russia launched its full-scale attack in Ukraine in February 2022. #assetmanagement #assetmanager #institutionalinvestor #institutionalinvestment #portfoliomanagement #portfoliomanager #riskmanagement #fundmanagement #fundmanager #equityfund #defense #rheinmetall #esginvesting #esginvestment

Sustainable investments used to be about ethics. Now they are more focused on compliance with complex EU regulation, Fredrik Nordström, CEO of Fondbolagens Förening, The Swedish Investment Fund Association, tells AMWatch in an interview. “Everyone is trying to figure out how to implement the regulation. It’s very complicated, because you don’t have a definition of sustainable investments. It’s more or less up to you what it means, which makes it very difficult to compare such investments,” he says. Nordström accuses the EU system of allowing “poor quality” in its legislative process, thereby creating high compliance costs. “It’s not only about the Commission’s high ambitions when pounding out new legislation. The problem is also that legal acts are not coordinated, such as the ones related to sustainable finance regulations. They are unclear and lack definitions.” #fundmanagement #fundmanager #assetmanagement #assetmanager #sustainability #investments #financialmarkets #SFDR #EUregulation #fundindustry #Sweden

After several years in the shadows, Nordic small-cap may be heading for a revival, Flemming Højbo writes in his latest analysis for AMWatch. Not only will lower interest rates benefit small companies, but there is also growing sentiment that the concentration on a few global stocks – not least the ‘Magnificent Seven’ tech giants – may be risky and unhealthy. A new Norwegian initiative – a state fund for investments in Nordic small-cap shares – may help pave the way for a comeback, as could the fact that the Swedish small-cap market is the strongest in Europe. #assetmanagement #fundmanagement #assetmanager #fundmanager #smallcap #investments #financialmarkets #Nordic #bankingindustry
