What competencies does future leadership need? 🧑💼💡 The world is in turmoil. A quarter of the world’s population lives in areas with unrest. The climate crisis is becoming more evident. Technological leaps are happening at an unprecedented speed, and for the first time ever, five generations are in the workforce simultaneously. This is how Louise Mors, Silviya Svejenova, and Eva Fog Bruun describe it in a column in Børsen Ledelse today. But what does leadership look like in this new reality? This question triggered CBS Leadership Centre when they invited around 50 acknowledged leaders and researchers into a think tank titled “Leadership for the Future” in 2023. Here, they identified four sets of leadership competencies that are central to robust and adaptable organizations, but also for leaders on a personal level, to navigate and thrive in the new dynamics: 🥁 Orchestrating Speed and Rhythm The rapid and frequent changes in the environment create a need for continuous transformation. This requires action here and now. But the ability to react quickly must be balanced with the patience to take a long-term perspective and the need to step back to give oneself (and the organization) time for reflection and recovery. Additionally, leaders must balance the desire to exploit existing activities while exploring new opportunities. This is a difficult balancing act because exploiting the existing and exploring the new require different skills, resources, and processes. 🧭 Sustaining Moral Compass Leaders today are increasingly expected to be role models for employees and other stakeholders. They are expected to take a stand on issues that have a real impact on society, and there is generally an increased focus on purpose and ethics – often based on the leader themselves. This requires leaders to be visible in communicating their personal values. They must be able to navigate with a moral compass, staying true to both themselves and the organization they represent. You can read more suggestions on important leadership competencies in the column below (in Danish). A thought provoking discussion on responsible leadership took place today, when H.E. the President of Iceland, Halla Tomasdottir, joined a fireside chat with Peter Møllgaard at Copenhagen Business School. The theme was RESPONSIBLE LEADERSHIP in the light of the long list of wicked problems that the world is facing. Problems that are Interconnected and resistant to simple solutions. Problems that need leadership to find the way for “a world that is desperate to see what is possible in a world that seems impossible”, as President Tomasdottir put it. During an extraordinarily inspirational talk, the president projected a number of important aspects of the leadership role, building on her experience and visions as President of Iceland, but also as former CEO of the The B Team, a global collective of business and civil society leaders driving a better way of doing business for people and planet. Point of departure was MORAL COMPASS which according to President Tomasdottir should be the basis for responsible leadership. Two essential elements were highlighted in this respect: Purpose and Principles – in both cases with a focus on values at the core. The discussion also touched upon the need for a shift in norms and in the leadership agenda. Humility and responsibility must go hand in hand. You should not be thinking less OF yourself but less ABOUT yourself and use this assertiveness to push for change. Another key point was the importance of ART and CREATIVITY as ingredients in change-making. “We have taken JOY and LOVE out of changing the world and that are some of the strongest drivers that exist”. Finally, the need for COURAGE was addressed. Among others, political courage to leave the predominant focus on 'short-termism' and courage to ask for governance with a new definition of success that values ‘competition with care’ and partnerships. We need COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP, because leadership is a collective and shared act. Indeed, it was a fireside chat that touched upon important elements in responsible leadership. At the CBS Leadership Centre we were pleased to see that many of the key takeaways tapped into the insights in the CBS Leadership Think Tank report on Future Leadership that has just been published (If you are curious to know more, follow this link👉: https://lnkd.in/dgkTXN4Q). It was one of these mornings that will stay with us for a while. Thank you, President Tomasdottir and CBS President Peter Møllgaard 💡🎯. #Leadership #Presidentialvisit #Responsibleleadership #Leadershipforthefuture #Thoughtprovoking

What are the three questions that you have to answer before going into war? 🛡️ 1. What is this war? What kind of conflict are we entering? 2. Why this war? Why do we choose to take up the fight? 3. How this war? How are we going to fight this war? These are questions that were highlighted last Friday, when we explored the essence of leadership in modern military command 🌟. We had the privilege of welcoming General Bartels Knud, former Chief of the Defence Staff, Denmark, and former Chair of the NATO Military Committee who shared his profound insights from a long life in the military. Among others, Knud Bartels shared his perspectives on the evolving demands of military leadership, emphasizing the critical balance between strategic acumen and political-military challenges. His discussion highlighted the importance of adaptability, resilience, and visionary thinking in navigating the complexities of modern military command. No doubt, many of the learnings could serve as inspiration for leadership in organizations outside the military. E.g. when the General reflected on the importance of a constructive approach to failure: "When you ask your subordinates 'How did it go?' people would say 'Oh it went well…' Then I wonder: Were you ahead of all the decisions? Did nothing fail? You have to learn from mistakes! Let people do mistakes because this is where you learn." A big Thank You to Organize! by Department of Organization (IOA) for co-organizing this event. And a special thanks to Professor Paul du Gay and Associate Professor Anne Roelsgaard Obling for perspectives and facilitation of the numerous questions - and to our very own Silviya Svejenova, Professor and Academic Co-Director at CBS Leadership Centre who introduced the day by setting the scene with reflections on our geopolitical context and its relevance to leadership ✨
