PRELIMINARY REMARKS Extinguishing liquid fires or plastic fires poses a particular challenge to firefighters and places high demands on fixed fire extinguishing systems with regard to the extinguishing agents to be used. Due to their excellent extinguishing effect, foam extinguishing agents offer remarkable advantages over other extinguishing agents, especially when fighting fires in Class A (solid materials) and Class B (liquid materials or liquefiable substances). Foam extinguishing agents of the AFFF group have been in use for many years. However, given the environmentally problematic and harmful properties of fluorine-based ingredients in foam extin- guishing agents, it must be assumed that, irrespective of their undeniable advantages in firefighting, the use of foam extinguishing agents will be severely restricted or even completely banned in the future. https://lnkd.in/dyEbWhS6 #foam extinguishing agents #PFAS #enviromental problematic

The Fire Industry Association (FIA) has published an update to its guidance note on the upcoming restrictions on the use of ‘forever chemicals’ in firefighting foams With the release of proposals by the EU relating to the use and control of a range of chemicals known to be persistent organic pollutants, the FIA has updated its guidance for those manufacturing, responsible for, or using firefighting foams. Research undertaken on behalf of the European Commission has identified chemical components within firefighting foams – PFOS, PFOA, and PFHxS – that with continued use “will lead to an increasing environmental stock and further environmental and human exposure”, which the Commission considers to be “an unacceptable risk to human health and the environment”. The length of time that these components persist in the environment has seen them be dubbed ‘forever chemicals’. https://lnkd.in/dWTawzFV

The New VdS CEA 4001: 2024-01: VdS training video is online now! 🎉   📌 What's the story?   The VdS guidelines for water extinguishing systems have been released in a new, updated edition in January 2024: VdS CEA 4001 (Guidelines for Sprinkler Systems, Planning, and Installation), VdS 2108 (Guidelines for Foam Extinguishing Systems, Planning, and Installation), and VdS 2109 (Guidelines for Water Spray Systems, Planning, and Installation). As usual, they are aimed particularly at planning and installation firms for water extinguishing systems, at operators of these systems who will find important information on maintenance, and at property insurers.   📌 Contents of the training video:   In this recording of our VdS online seminar, the new features are presented in detail. The speaker is Frank Bieber, VdS Schadenverhütung GmbH. He is an expert, head of the VdS CEA 4001 working group and head of the TP product management department at VdS. The language of the recordings is German, but they are subtitled in English.
