September closed off in style with Oslo Innovation Week and the EIFO GP Summit. We were there and here’s what we learned: ► Climate is dominating the agenda. More funds, more founders, more solutions ► The 2030 Climate Tech Summit did an excellent job bringing together the whole ecosystem, from pre-everything to public ► EIFO plays a key role in sharpening climate fund managers across the region

🏗️"Concrete" Steps Toward a Greener Tomorrow - Why we invested in ecoLocked Our planet is graying as concrete demand skyrockets. By 2060, we’ll need 230 billion square meters of new infrastructure – equivalent to a city the size of Paris every week. This comes at a heavy cost for our planet - cement accounts for 8% of global emissions, exceeding the impact of aviation and heavy trucking combined. Enter ecoLocked with its industry uplifting solution. By leveraging biochar, ecoLocked embeds CO2 into concrete, transforming buildings into long-term carbon sinks. Their eLM Zero product line, already adopted across the DACH region and the Netherlands, enables certified carbon-neutral concrete. We're proud to have co-led the €4M funding round to help ecoLocked expand its production, launch new product lines, and scale the offtake of its innovative products – all with the goal of cutting the construction industry’s carbon footprint and achieving 1Gt of carbon removal by 2040. ➡️Check our blog for the full story on why ecoLocked emerged as a comprehensive solution (among the myriad of approaches considered by our team) to the challenges posed by the industry. https://lnkd.in/gtJccpQy Dr. Mario Schmitt Stefanie Gerhart Micheil Gordon Malin Carlstrom Morten Halborg Stefan Maard Doerte Hirschberg Jørn Haanæs Matterwave Ventures Ines Kolmsee Lorenzo De Angeli Counteract Andy Bonsall 1.5° Ventures Dr. Julian Weisbrod Sabancı Building Solutions

🌍 Climentum Capital Portfolio Day 2024 is in the books! Last week, we successfully hosted another fantastic Portfolio Day 2024 at the BioInnovation Institute (BII) in Copenhagen. Bringing together the minds of our founders, LPs, advisors and partners, we discussed critical strategies to address some of the core challenges faced by hard tech companies on their scaling journeys. 🚀 Key takeaways from our sessions: 1. Fundraising Excellence: Start conversations with potential investors early and develop personal relationships to set the stage for successful rounds. 2. Debt & Financial Structures: Ownership of the entire process is essential to get a FOAK project running. Outstanding tech needs strong COO and CFO capabilities. 3. Enterprise Sales & Partnerships: Advanced shareholder mapping and tailored support can turn founders into impactful salespeople. BII hosted a dynamic tour where we explored some of the world’s leading innovations in biotech aimed at solving human and planetary health challenges. It was an inspiring day full of collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and fresh perspectives. 🌱🔬 Special thanks to our portfolio companies, LPs, and partners for making this event a resounding success. Here’s to pushing the envelope in climate tech and scaling innovations that matter. 🙌 We look forward to many more collaborative efforts to support the next wave of breakthroughs! #ClimateTech #HardTech #VentureCapital #PortfolioDay #Sustainability #Innovation #Copenhagen #ScalingStartups #BII #ClimentumCapital #VCInsights Trine Y. It’s event season! Where do you go? What do you attend? We’re quite clear about the things we really like, and TechBBQ and The Drop have become essential meeting places for the startup community. Hard to understand climate tech without being at The Drop. Hard to connect with the new Nordic industries without being at TechBBQ. That’s why you attend, right? Meeting founders, investors, academic institutions, maybe a big company or two, different but important pieces in the puzzle. Event organizers and ecosystem builders are doing important work in our industry. Thanks for having us at these valuable meeting places - and see you at one of these other events over the next few weeks.

Thank you to Ole Andersen and KapitalWatch for highlighting our perspective on the current appetite of pension funds for venture capital. “Our view isn’t that pension funds lack interest in venture investments—they’re simply being more selective,” shares Morten Halborg of Climentum Capital. While some pension funds' recent comments may seem discouraging, it's important to understand their hesitation. Many have reduced venture investments due to past over-allocation to alternatives. The issue isn't a lack of interest—it's a more discerning approach to investment choices. At Climentum Capital, we see a strong desire among institutional investors to achieve meaningful, Article 9-aligned impact, but the availability of genuine funds remains limited. We are actively engaging with select pension funds and institutional investors on how venture investments in new climate technologies can deliver significant impact and outsized financial returns. Dr. Mario Schmitt from our portfolio company ecoLocked has written a review on the need for carbon removal in the construction sector including best practices to ensure that you are really contributing to climate change mitigation. Now I finally found the time and I‘m quite proud of the result. 🌍 When you work in impact, additionality is the single most important concept to judge your success by. (Why) is my solution needed? What would the world look like if it did not exist? And what if it was used at global scale? Actually, every company should reflect on these questions. 💡In a sector like carbon removal, that‘s true all the more. Sector-specific climate pathways, interdependencies with emission reduction, permanence of storage, carbon markets, offsetting and insetting….all highly complex topics, characterized by lots of uncertainties. That makes for a heated discussion with many different opinions. So, I took some time to read articles, gather expert opinions, and review hypotheses and scenarios based on real-world customer situations. All the while trying to keep it short and simple (partially achieved I'd say). 🤝 Here‘s to hoping that this article can foster a better understanding of CDR's potential to complement emission reduction and provide guidance on how to validate your investment's contribution to climate change mitigation! Note: while I tried to remain as objective as possible, naturally, ecoLocked‘s model serves as the primary case in point - otherwise, we wouldn’t be doing what we are doing. Thanks a ton for your contributions Riccardo Ambrosini, Giorgio Ponte and Sepanta Golchin! ➡️ Link to article in the comments What are your opinions on the matter? 🔋Unleashing Energy Efficiency: How ZeroPoint Technologies is Transforming the Future of Microchips Climentum Capital is excited to support ZeroPoint, a company revolutionizing the microchip industry with its groundbreaking memory compression technology. As the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector is projected to account for 13% of global electricity consumption by 2030, the need for energy-efficient solutions has never been more urgent. ZeroPoint’s memory compression technology optimizes microchip performance, delivering up to 50% more performance per watt by eliminating unnecessary information. This is a game-changer for data centers and smart device developers, who can now maximize their systems' efficiency while significantly reducing energy consumption. What sets ZeroPoint apart? Their technology is 1,000 times faster than other compression methods and offers compression across the entire memory hierarchy—from cache to storage. This ensures seamless integration and outstanding energy savings, all while improving performance and user experience. The impact is already being felt, with ZeroPoint’s solution having the potential to reduce emissions by over 2 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2032. This is not just about cutting costs; it’s about paving the way for a more energy-efficient, sustainable ICT industry. ZeroPoint is already making strides with a major global semiconductor manufacturer, and they’re just getting started. As they continue to set new standards for memory efficiency, we look forward to seeing how their technology will redefine energy consumption in the digital age. 🚀 Check out the full interview with Klas Moreau, CEO at ZeroPoint (see link in the comments).
