Pioneering Alzheimer’s Disease Research with Untargeted Metabolomics! We are proud to have contributed to important work published in BRAIN on the gut-brain axis in Alzheimer’s Disease. Researchers at University College Cork in Ireland employed our untargeted metabolomics capabilities in an Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) Fecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT) study to uncover novel microbiome-mediated mechanisms that induce AD symptoms in healthy animals upon transfer of diseased-animal gut contents. This data supports the systemic role of gut microbiota in AD progression, specifically via the impairment of hippocampal neurogenesis. Untargeted Metabolomics Data Generation: Leveraging our capabilities in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), we identified 245 metabolites from our internal database in caecal content and hippocampal tissue of young adult rats. This data was pivotal in identifying significant metabolic alterations following the transplantation of gut microbiota from AD patients. In addition, we leveraged external databases to infer several hundred additional metabolites, enriching the dataset and expanding the scope of our metabolic analysis. Elucidating Metabolic Pathways in Alzheimer's Disease: This data revealed distinctive metabolites in AD vs. healthy animals, such as amino acids (histidine, aminoadipic acid, taurine), organic acids (galactonic, succinic acid), tryptophan metabolites (kynurenic acid, xanthurenic acid), and ketone bodies(hydroxybutyrate). These findings point towards metabolic pathways that may influence the onset and progression of AD, offering new targets for therapeutic intervention. This seminal work is instrumental for developing novel diagnostics and treatments for complex health challenges like AD. This study not only emphasizes the role of the microbiota-gut-brain axis in AD but also highlights our capability to deliver high-quality metabolomics data that can drive significant advancements in neurodegenerative disease research. CHAMP™, our specialized human microbiome profiler, is now available on the CosmosID-HUB software! Users can now run CHAMP via the easy-to-use user interface or via the command line as well as create comparative analyses directly on the platform.

Over the past few weeks, our team has been busy attending the International Scientific Conference on Probiotics, Prebiotics, Gut Microbiota and Health - IPC2024 in Prague and #IHMC2024 in Rome. Our #innovation team was dedicated to scouting the latest advancements in #microbiome and #metagenomics to maintain our position as technology leaders. We also shared some of our research, including Paula Rodríguez-García and Shaillay Dogra's poster on infant age modeling to better understand the role of HMOs in infant formula, and Gustav Lindved's presentation on how our clonal resolution profiling can help #probiotic and #LBP developers. We want to thank the organizers and all the attendees who made these conferences full of exciting talks and fantastic networking opportunities.

Our Chief Scientific Officer, H. Bjørn Nielsen, and metabolomics expert, Lea Giørtz Johnsen, recently spoke at the Danish Cancer Institute Research Centre about the importance of the #microbiome and #metabolomics in #cancer and its treatment. Bjørn presented on our CHAMP profiling pipeline, which can analyze high-host samples like the tumor microbiome, providing valuable insights for cancer research. Lea highlighted the role of metabolomics in cancer, referencing a Nature article our team recently contributed to that discusses how NAD+ might directly influence cancer treatment by affecting nucleotide metabolism.
