Today marks the first day of the Powering European Industry event in Sønderborg where industry leaders, policymakers, and analysts are discussing how competitive decarbonization can become a great growth opportunity for Europe. We had the privilege of showcasing two sites that highlight the opportunities for a competitive and decarbonized industry: ➡️ Danfoss’ carbon-neutral HQ: Our 250,000m² Nordborg factory site, which achieved carbon neutrality in 2022, demonstrates the power of energy-efficient technologies, excess heat reuse, and sector integration. This site serves as a global roadmap for decarbonizing factories through our three-step approach: 1. Reduce energy consumption, 2. Electrify to prepare for a renewable energy system, and 3. Integrate processes and sectors to reuse excess energy.     ➡️ Vesterled Brick Plant: Egernsund Wienerberger A/S's Vesterled plant, Denmark’s most energy-efficient brick plant, is on track to become carbon neutral by 2050. Europe’s competitiveness hinges on decarbonization. High energy costs, exacerbated by geopolitical events, continue to threaten the profitability and competitiveness of European industries. Next week, from October 28-29 Danfoss will be coming together with Danish Industry, International Energy Agency (IEA) and BusinessEurope to host the Powering European Industry event in Sønderborg, Denmark. The conference will see leading analysts, policy makers and European industry leaders coming together to explore the necessary steps to improve Europe’s competitiveness in conjunction with the energy transition. At Danfoss, we believe that competitive decarbonization is a solution to the challenge of restoring European competitiveness. Not only is it the right thing to do – it’s also good business. By adopting cost-efficient energy efficiency measures, manufacturing industries could almost double the gross value added from each unit of energy use by 2040. The science is clear. The last decade has been warmer than any decade in the past 125,000 years. 🌍 On this International Day of Climate Action, we highlight the urgent need to rethink the way we use energy. At Danfoss, we have coined this three-step approach: Reduce, Reuse, Re-source. First, we reduce energy consumption Second, we reuse excess energy and integrate sectors Third, we re-source green energy by phasing out fossil fuels in favor of clean energy such as renewable electricity and green hydrogen Only in this sequence can we achieve rapid and cost-efficient decarbonization. Our headquarters in Nordborg, Denmark recently achieved record-low heating costs with our own Leanheat® Production solution. Since spring 2024, Leanheat® Production optimized our heating costs by 15%. It uses smart algorithms to adjust boiler and thermal storage charging in real-time and provides detailed energy use data that delivers even more savings. We believe in our Reduce, Reuse, Re-source approach, and we’re implementing it in our factories all around the world. This latest achievement highlights the power of automated energy optimization and is an important step in our efforts to Reduce. Decarbonizing is not only the right thing to do – it is also good business.   Industry accounts for 38% of global CO2 emissions. Fortunately, decarbonizing industrial companies can actually make them more resilient and increase their economic competitiveness while reducing CO2 emissions.   The new Danfoss Impact paper, “Competitive decarbonization: Powering the industries of tomorrow,” provides a clear guide for how companies can strengthen their competitive advantage through decarbonization, electrification, and energy efficiency.   With existing technologies, companies can: · Increase energy efficiency to reduce emissions and costs · Electrify machinery to phase out fossil fuels · Unlock access to green investments   One major finding from the paper is that optimizing industrial motor efficiency in the EU alone could save €9.5-10.7 billion in electricity costs annually, while avoiding the equivalent annual CO2 emissions of up to two million European citizens.   Through decarbonization, electrification, and energy efficiency, industries can turn the greatest challenge of our time into a vehicle of growth. Decarbonization isn’t magic. It’s simply implementing what we know already works. Shutoff initiatives are low-hanging fruit — readily available to decarbonize by eliminating energy waste. In a recent pilot study at a Danfoss factory site in Slovenia, we found that 80% of machines could be shut off when not in use instead of being on constant standby.  We unlocked energy savings of 30% by making these machines run only when they need to. And we expect that scaling up shutoff initiatives across 45 additional Danfoss factories in 2024 will deliver savings in the range of 80 million kWh annually. That’s between 8% and 10% of our total energy usage. And this effort represents just one aspect of a multi-faceted decarbonization approach. Today, on World Food Day 2024, we’re highlighting the importance of sustainable practices in every aspect of our lives, including how we manage our food supply. Take supermarkets. Last week, Danfoss and UN Global Compact Network Denmark co-hosted the launch of Danfoss’ sustainability paper: Circularity in action: A framework for sustainability in product innovation. With this paper and launch, our aim is to spark industry dialogue and collective progress on circularity and product sustainability through transparency, learning, and collaboration.      It is clear that circularity and product sustainability are a business imperative that unlock new opportunities, and starting with innovation is key.
