Yesterday, the Millennium Technology Prize was awarded in Finland. The prize indicates the crucial role that technology and science plays in solving the great challenges of the world. This year’s winner, Professor Bantval Jayant Baliga, was recognized for his pioneering work in developing the insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT). Since its invention in the 1980s, the IGBT has been essential in making electrical energy use more efficient and less harmful to the environment. Danfoss Drives uses IGBT technology in its AC drives, which has helped many companies reduce their carbon emissions over the years. Because of his admiration for the professor and his groundbreaking work, Mika Kulju, President, Danfoss Drives, attended a lecture in Helsinki, Finland today, where Professor Bantval Jayant Baliga spoke about transforming global electrification. All of us at Danfoss Drives thank Professor Baliga for his invaluable contributions and congratulate him on this well-deserved honor! #MillenniumTechnologyPrize #IGBT #WeAreDanfoss #EngineeringTomorrow

Decarbonizing is not only the right thing to do – it is also good business. Industry accounts for 38% of global CO2 emissions. Fortunately, decarbonizing industrial companies can actually make them more resilient and increase their economic competitiveness while reducing CO2 emissions. The new Danfoss Impact paper, “Competitive decarbonization: Powering the industries of tomorrow,” provides a clear guide for how companies can strengthen their competitive advantage through decarbonization, electrification, and energy efficiency. With existing technologies, companies can: · Increase energy efficiency to reduce emissions and costs · Electrify machinery to phase out fossil fuels · Unlock access to green investments One major finding from the paper is that optimizing industrial motor efficiency in the EU alone could save €9.5-10.7 billion in electricity costs annually, while avoiding the equivalent annual CO2 emissions of up to two million European citizens. Through decarbonization, electrification, and energy efficiency, industries can turn the greatest challenge of our time into a vehicle of growth. The journey toward a sustainable future starts with concrete actions. At Danfoss, we’ve already embarked on this path with decarbonization solutions that are both practical and proven. In the first episode of our "Decarbonization Explained" series, we break down how industries can reduce their emissions while staying competitive. One key focus is using energy more efficiently. Did you know that electric motors account for over half of the world’s electricity consumption? Imagine the savings if we could optimize every motor to only run when needed and at optimal speed. Our approach is simple but powerful: reduce energy consumption, reuse untapped energy, and re-source with renewables. These strategies don’t just cut carbon — they offer financial payback in under three years. Curious to learn more about how we're leading the charge in decarbonizing industries? Are you ready to shift your perspective on the cold chain? This week at Chillventa in Nuremberg, Germany, we’ve been highlighting solutions that can create a sustainable cold chain, improving efficiency and reducing carbon emissions from farm to table. With efficient harmonic mitigation and condition-based monitoring, you can upgrade your facility to meet the demands of tomorrow. These are some of the topics that Daniel Wiesenfeller, BU Sales Director HVAC/R – Europe at Danfoss has spoken about with attendees at Chillventa over the past few days. Even if you missed the exhibition, you can still hear from Daniel in the video below, but you can also learn much more about it all here: https://bit.ly/4dEvLaH #Chillventa2024 #EnergyEfficiency #ConditionBasedMonitoring #HarmonicMitigation #EngineeringTomorrow

In the fast-paced world of fruit production and trade, maintaining product quality and extending shelf life are crucial. This is especially true for Rivoira Giovanni e Figli S.p.A., a leader in apple production, storage, and processing. In 2022, they sought to expand cold storage at their Verzuolo site, partnering with Gaudino Refrigerazione (Gaudino SRL) to optimize their refrigeration systems. The site now boasts over 70 cold storage rooms, enabling Rivoira to store up to 70,000 tons of apples each year. Upon arrival at Verzuolo, some apples are designated for long-term storage in controlled atmosphere cold rooms, where oxygen is reduced to about 1%, and temperatures are kept between 0–2°C. Maintaining consistent and reliable cooling in these rooms is critical to prevent system failures that could result in costly product losses. Gaudino Refrigerazione designed a solution for Rivoira, serving seven cold storage cells, with two compression units powered by high-efficiency VLT® HVAC Drive FC 102 drives. Adding to the innovation, the drives feature condition-based monitoring and the DrivePro® Remote Monitoring service. This enables Rivoira to carry out predictive maintenance, ensuring the system's reliability while also reducing maintenance costs. World Hydrogen Week is well underway in Copenhagen, Denmark, and today one of the topics is on emerging technology to support the growth of green hydrogen and large-scale projects. Damir Alihodzic, Business Development Manager, Danfoss Drives, joined this talk and highlighted that the green hydrogen sector holds incredible potential to drive the clean energy transition. However, the green hydrogen sector faces challenges, with cost being a major factor since production is still expensive. Nonetheless, we need to decarbonize our most carbon-intensive sectors such as industry, transport, buildings, and energy systems. And green hydrogen plays a critical role in this. Positive things are already happening, and Danfoss is helping with leading the way. Take Everfuel as an example, who is becoming a pioneer in green hydrogen production. And they are using Danfoss iC7-Hybrid power converters to do it: Learn more about that here: https://bit.ly/3Bm3fx1 #GreenHydrogen #WorldHydrogenWeek #iC7Hybrid #EngineeringTomorrow

How do we ramp up green hydrogen production without overwhelming our finances or the power grid? This is just one of the questions that we are trying to answer at World Hydrogen Week in Copenhagen this week. Today, Peter Friedrich Gschwend, Head of Europe, Middle East, and Africa Marine & Electrification, Danfoss Drives, joined a Masterclass with representatives from Energistyrelsen, Everfuel, and Hitachi Energy to talk more about why making cost-efficient hydrogen production and usage is vital. Making cost-efficient production and usage is vital — especially considering that by 2050, hydrogen production is projected to demand more than half of today’s total electricity supply. To meet this demand responsibly, we must prioritize maximizing the energy efficiency of the electrolysis process itself. Learn more about that in our Green Hydrogen Impact Paper: https://bit.ly/49NIS7I #GreenHydrogen #WorldHydrogenWeek #EnergyEfficiency #Sustainability #EngineeringTomorrow

What’s the latest in decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries? It’s the new Yara Clean Ammonia plant, now up and running in Porsgrunn, Norway. This plant uses green hydrogen to produce renewable ammonia for fertilizers. A key component of the electrolysis process for hydrogen production is the iC7-Hybrid power converter from Danfoss. The plant designed and built by Linde Engineering uses this advanced power conversion technology to play a crucial role in ensuring efficient and reliable electrolyzer operation, vital for producing green hydrogen viably. Yara will use the green hydrogen as feedstock to produce 20,500 metric tons of ammonia per year, which will be converted into 80,000 metric tons of green fertilizer. This project not only represents a significant leap towards decarbonizing the food value chain and energy-intensive industries but also underscores the power of the collaborative efforts of Linde Engineering and Danfoss Drives in developing cutting-edge, environmentally friendly technologies to combat CO2 emissions.
