Om os
Center for Ecological Dynamics in a Novel Biosphere (ECONOVO) is a DNRF Center of Excellence - funded for a 6 years’ period by the Danish National Research Foundation from January 2023 – December 2028. In Center for Ecological Dynamics in a Novel Biosphere (ECONOVO), we aim to produce groundbreaking insights into how the worldwide emergence of novel ecosystems impacts biodiversity and biosphere functioning and how we can steer these dynamics towards the most positive outcomes for life on Earth as possible. ECONOVO’s research program is organized around four research themes to provide the much-needed basis for predicting the consequences of the accelerating global spread of novel ecosystems and improving their value for Earth’s biodiversity and biosphere functioning.

🚨 Unlocking the Future of Southeast Asia's Forests! 🌍🌳 Sean Pang, a researcher at Aarhus Universitet´s Center for Ecological Dynamics in a Novel Biosphere (ECONOVO), has just published an exciting new study in Nature Sustainability, revealing crucial insights into how we can protect Southeast Asia’s rich biodiversity. The research highlights that to save the region's diverse tree species, we must tackle both climate change and land-use changes simultaneously. 🌱 🔍 Key Insights: 📍 Modelled the future of 1,498 tree species under various global scenarios. 📍 Species losses were worst under intermediate pathways (SSP2-4.5 & SSP3-7.0), driven by land-use changes like agriculture. 🌾 📍 Coastal and mountain species are especially vulnerable, with those in the Sundaic tropics at highest risk. 🏞️ 🌟 Why It Matters: The study shows that focusing on just one issue—climate or land-use—won’t work. We need a balanced approach (SSP1-2.6) combining climate action with sustainable land management to protect biodiversity. 🌍 📢 Call to Action: Targeted conservation strategies, reforestation, and habitat protection are essential to safeguarding Southeast Asia’s forests. 🌳 📖 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eB4qpKNQ. Aarhus Universitet ranks 22nd globally for research impact in Ecology & Evolution, placing Denmark prominently on the world stage. 🌍 It's great to see both Aarhus and the University of Copenhagen (Københavns Universitet) in the top 25, showcasing Denmark's strong contribution to biodiversity and ecosystem research, driving the green transition forward! 🌿 #Sustainability #GreenTransition #ResearchExcellence
Very proud that Ecology & Evolution at Aarhus University ranks 22 in the world in terms of hard-core bibliometric research impact https://lnkd.in/dUbjg3Kt 🌿 And number 1 in Denmark - likely statistically on par with our excellent colleagues at University of Copenhagen (Københavns Universitet) (global rank 23) 🌐 I think that's pretty well done for two public universities that take on a broad educational role within our society🏫 I'm also happy to report that our candidates with expertise in #biodiversity & #ecosystems are highly sought after by both private & public sectors - which of course makes good sense in order to achieve an effective green transition with long-term positive effects for people & the biosphere 🍃🌼🦬🧬🦌🥭 #dkgreen #grønomstilling #bæredygtighed #uddannelse #forskning #dkpol #miljø #natur

🐘Humans, not climate, led to massive extinctions among large mammals🐘 🌍 In a groundbreaking study, Jens-Christian Svenning and his team from Aarhus Universitet synthesize rich evidence that prehistoric humans drove the disappearance of mammoths, giant sloths, sabertoothed cats, and other large animals. Published in Cambridge Prisms: Extinction, their review shows that megafauna losses were closely coupled to the emergence of modern humans, their global spread, and cultural dynamics, but had no consistent link to any aspect of climate or climate change 🌍 The synthesis shows that early humans were skilled hunters 🏹, capable of reducing populations of large animals such as mammoths and giant armadillos. This overhunting, combined with the inherently slow life cycles of large-bodied animals and negative indirect effects due to the associated biotic simplification, offer a sufficient explanation for the extinction 🦣 The review shows that a rich evidence base exists indicating that the severe, selective losses of large-bodied animals from all continents (except Antarctica) 🗺️ cannot be attributed to climate dynamics, but instead represent an early human transformation of ecosystems globally 🌐 Curious to learn more about how ancient human activities caused the decline of large mammals? 🤔 For further insights: https://lnkd.in/eGTYUUtE Explore additional media coverage: 1) https://lnkd.in/dNN4Jm-B 2) https://lnkd.in/d2ACfAwY 3) https://lnkd.in/dmXxN57F Danmarks Grundforskningsfond / The Danish National Research Foundation #Megafauna #Extinctions #HumanImpacts #EcologicalResearch
